I got a chance to catch up with Hodlbod, one of the original client developers on Nostr. We started by talking about how he sees his work on Nostr through the lens of Christianity (and his new podcast Thank God For Nostr which goes deeper on that). We also went deeper to discuss how much relay selection should be visible to users and how relay commoditization and competition might work in the future. Finally we did a deep brainstorm around relays and how they could fit into a Subreddit-like/Zine-like thing on Nostr.

Minds.com is one of the original approaches to building a social networking service that seeks to empower users with more freedom (e.g., free speech, portable identities, etc.). Beginning over 10 years ago they’ve evolved the service to play a role in the modern architecture we’re exploring with Nostr. After Bill’s recent appearance talking about Nostr on Joe Rogan’s podcast we got a chance to dig deeper on the key philosophical and technical principles behind their work and how they think about Nostr. This was fun to finally lay down a video together where we cover his move from the US to Italy and how his orange/purple-pill is going in his remote mountain village. We also learned about his beliefs on how we can help Nostr succeed faster, how he decided to go “all-in” on Nostr, what he’s building with Listr, and his ideas to spur education and to improve developer experience with NDK.

Hodlbod was so early to building in this space that he almost built a competing social media protocol, but once he found Nostr he decided it was sufficient for his needs. So instead he built one of the first big Nostr clients called Coracle. He’s excited about pushing the art forward on building for community and messaging use-cases and is “going all-in” on building on Nostr.
