  • How strong are your senses? Certified sommelier Gigi V earned her pin through the Court of Master Sommeliers by acing their blind taste tests – “determining the variety, vintage, and region of a wine using only the senses: the appearance of the wine, its nose, and its effect on the palate.”

Sexy as that may sound, Gigi insists her job is the opposite of glamorous. She joins the pod to give a frank and hilarious look behind the scenes of the fine dining industry. [If you’ve dined at Antonio’s at PGA Cars, M Dining, Vask, The Tasting Room at City of Dreams, Chef Jessie, or bought wine from Wine Drop (by AWC/Txanton), chances are you’ve come across her work.]

She discusses her origin story, including foreign exchange programs and how a mentor at the Culinary Institute of America unlocked the magic of food and wine pairings for her, changing the course of her career. After graduating at the top of her class at CIA, she moved to the world of wine from the culinary sideand never looked back.

We chat Old World vs. New World, natural wines, and the benefits of being multi-lingual (think being the only one who could translate for Chinese tourists in the casino and the French head chef).

We came out of this interview praying she’d release a Kitchen Confidential-style tell-all à la Anthony Bourdain. This pod ep will have to do… for now.

This episode is dedicated to everyone in the service industry.

  • How does a cancer diagnosis change one’s life?

Real estate professional and former lawyer Timothy Lim joins us on the pod to discuss how he parlayed his bout with the disease into an advocacy for medical cannabis and fuel to launch the head shop Lion Labs and all its offshoots.

He discusses a potential path to legalization in the Philippines, policy differences in the Asian region, as well as vested interests and barriers to legal reform. Most striking was how he is not dwelling on setbacks, but seizing opportunities instead. While we covered some serious ground, Tim infused the conversation with good humor and optimism.

This episode is dedicated to anyone with an open mind, heart, and ears.

  • Who needs a drink?

Joel Darwin is a craft brewer, one of the partners at Palm Tree Abbey, a nanobrewery based in Manila, Philippines with experimental brews inspired by everything from the unique ingredients found in the tropics to the Philadelphia roots of two of the founders.

Joel joins us on the pod to discuss the history of beer (everything from ancient civilizations to psychedelic cult rituals), the brewing process, and how it brings people together.

When he’s not brewing, Joel also serves as managing director of Natural Selection Design, a boutique design studio he co-founded with his wife Marla. Aside from brand development and identity design, they are known for their print and environmental graphics, including naming and packaging for various beloved F&B brands.

Joel also previously co-founded the start-up Learn Talk, served as a corporate trainer and English instructor, and worked in the field of curriculum development. His communication skills are very much on display on the pod, as was his empathy. Our favorite parts were listening to him talk about how his daughter inspired his work, and the advice he gave to people having a rough time with the pandemic, as framed in terms of brewing and the harvest.

This episode is dedicated to everyone experimenting and starting new things, including everyone who just brought a baby into the world (whatever shape or form that took). Cheers to you.

  • Why was Voltes V banned in the Philippines during Martial Law? Concerns about the effects of violence on children, said the official statement. Perhaps the mecha anime's theme of young resistance fighters battling an oppressive regime hit too close to home for the censors, others opined.

Stories have power, as we discuss with Laurianne Uy, a storyboard artist and comic creator from Manila, Philippines now based in LA whose work has appeared in film, TV, print, and online.

She started drawing comics about her favorite characters in 1997 and also served as art editor for her high school and college newspapers. Laur went on to major in History of Art at the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in and wrote her honors thesis on manga and female representation. In 2012, she won a Xeric grant and launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for her self-published young adult comic series "Polterguys."

She successfully deployed her lifelong passion for drawing and storytelling to a career in animation by 2017. She is currently a Story Artist for Skydance Animation, and has also worked as a Storyboard Artist for DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, Titmouse, Wild Canary Animation, Activision, and Soapbox Films. She has worked on storyboard animation for properties such as Star Trek, Madagascar, Cleopatra in Space, Deathstroke, and Puss in Boots.

She gets real about being lost in her twenties, finding her way back to her first love of drawing, turning down movie offers to adapt her comics, how the manga and anime fandom went mainstream, as well as universal advice on the dangers of burnout and the importance of boundaries between our personal and professional lives.

This episode is dedicated to all artists making their voices heard and standing up for truth in darkness... and to all our Filipino listeners who showed up at the polls on May 9. Representation matters, as Laur said. Stories matter, too -- and we are still writing our collective story as a nation.

We hope this episode (recorded in 2021) brings you joy in these times.

  • How do you solve a problem like Manila traffic?

Transport planner and transport economist Anton Siy develops solutions and strategies for public and private authorities looking for ways out of traffic congestion, educating us all on how to "move people, not cars" and the dangers of "induced demand" (or why just adding more roads makes things worse).

As Head of Pasig Transport, Anton handles local transport planning & policy, road safety, and e-mobility for Pasig, a city in Metro Manila with nearly a million residents.

On a national level, he previously worked with the Philippines' Department of Finance from 2013 to 2015, where he was part of the multi-agency team that helped launch various Public-Private Partnership Projects for transport infrastructure.

From 2015 to 2016, Anton studied at the University of Leeds' Institute for Transport Studies through a Chevening Scholarship, where he earned an M.A. in Transport Economics with Distinction. He also holds an M.S. in Finance from Boston College and a B.A. in International Relations from Tufts University.

On this episode, we discuss what Manila can learn from other global cities, how his office managed the lockdowns of 2020, and building consensus despite opposition from some stakeholders (like his work establishing dedicated bike lanes along car-filled streets – the data doesn’t lie!).

This episode is dedicated to all the urban commuters and anyone who puts collective welfare above personal gain.

  • How do we navigate socials in the new normal?

Rita Neri Event Planners CEO Rita Neri shares insights drawn from over 30 years of experience planning weddings, debuts, corporate and charity events.

What originally started as an offshoot of a small wedding shop she established in the 90s has blossomed into a brand with a global footprint, servicing clients from 4 continents and counting. RNEP's celebrity clients include Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzales, Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos, plus Hong Kong superstars Dicky Cheung and Jess Zhang, Nicolas Tse and Cecilia Cheung.

RN has also worked to professionalize the event planning industry as a whole. Her pioneering efforts include conducting wedding coordination training seminars, collaborating with global event powerhouses such as Preston Bailey and Grace Ormonde, and partnering with the Philippine Department of Tourism in promoting the Philippines and its talents on an international scale.

She has been a consultant and resource speaker on the topic of events, as well as a contributing writer to bridal publications. She also wrote two best-selling books, “The Essential Wedding Workbook for the Filipina” and “Your Handy Wedding Guidebook,” a DIY guide for couples on a budget.

On this episode, we chat event etiquette in the time of corona, the state of the events industry, options for commitment ceremonies given same sex marriage restrictions in the Philippines, considerations for both religious and secular ceremonies, security protocol for VIPs, and her thoughts on “that J. Lo movie.”

This episode is dedicated to anyone making any sort of commitment this year, and to the entire events industry that is getting back on its feet.

NOTE: Our hearts go out to those affected by war. We hope this episode brings listeners some entertainment and joy, a break from heavier headlines. That said, the portion of the interview where we briefly talk about RN’s father – a career diplomat who served as Foreign Secretary, Ambassador to Japan, and chief negotiator for reparations post-World War II – resonates even more, underscoring the importance of diplomacy and international relations.

  • What is the essence of style?

Sidney Yap has explored that very question over a long & storied fashion styling career that includes runway, editorial, TV/film, commercial, prenup, celebrity, and personal styling.

Artistically inclined from a young age, Sid found his calling producing fashion shows for student orgs while completing his degree in business management at the Ateneo de Manila University. He went to on study at Parsons School of Design in New York, followed up by a stint in retail merchandising, before a quick styling gig had the industry knocking on his door to pursue styling full-time.

The looks he created for celebrity and prenup clients are all over social media, but you’ve probably also seen his work in publications like Cosmo, FHM, Good Housekeeping, Lifestyle Asia, Manila Bulletin, Mega, Men’s Health, Metro, People Asia, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Philippine Star, Preview, Seventeen, Star Studio (which awarded him Celebrity Stylist of the Year), the Star Magic Catalogue, and Yes! magazine.

On this episode, Sid gives us a peek behind the scenes of a typical event or shoot. We also discuss finding one's personal style, Zoom dressing, the best-dressed member of BTS, his research into fashion history, and his zen approach to letting go of possessions.

He also shares his optimistic outlook for what is ahead, after a rocky period for all. All in all, something cheery to kick off the New Year.

This episode is dedicated to everyone who has had to start over from scratch this year.

NOTE: We'd planned to release this episode in December, but put it on hold in light of the devastation caused by supertyphoon Odette / Rai in our hometown, Philippines. Our featured non-profit Lokal Lab is focusing on relief efforts in Siargao as well as longer-term plans to rebuild a stronger and more climate resilient island. If you’re in Metro Manila and have clothing and other resources to spare, you may send in-kind donations till the end of January. They are also accepting cash and crypto donations from all over the world. Visit @lokallab on IG or https://linktr.ee/lokal.lab for more.

  • How does one continue to provide care when no one is taking care of you?

Irene Sarmiento is a multi-awarded writer, former college instructor, and occupational therapist based in the US whose work raises thought-provoking questions like the one above, giving voice to a community of healthcare and migrant workers.

After graduating cum laude from the University of the Philippines Manila with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy and topping the Philippine Occupational Therapy board exams, Irene worked in academia, long-term acute care, skilled nursing facilities, home health, and several pediatric outpatient clinics in both the Philippines and the States. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Applied Cognition and Neuroscience from the University of Texas at Dallas.

On this episode, we talk about her experiences as a healthcare worker, battling the specter of Asian hate and sexual harassment at work, but also contemplating the postcolonial/imperialist structures that pervade healthcare systems and drive labor migration.

On the lighter side, we also discuss her meditation and mindfulness practices, as well as her writing – including one memorable dinner with Neil Gaiman, which resulted in a collaboration for one of her children’s books.

This episode is dedicated to those who welcome “outsiders” (to cliques, crews, and countries) with open arms and open minds.

  • What was it like being named CEO during the pandemic?

Mohamed Rasheed Almaraj is the Chief Executive Officer of ila Bank, a digital retail bank established in Bahrain. A wholly owned subsidiary of Bank ABC, ila is the first cloud-based, digital, mobile-only bank in the Middle East… and it’s just getting started with its plans to expand to the rest of the region, North Africa, and beyond.

Prior to this appointment, Mohamed served as the COO of ila Bank and previously played a key role in several group level initiatives of Bank ABC as Vice President of Group Strategy. He also did investment banking at Perella Weinberg Partners in New York, where he worked in corporate mergers & acquisitions.

While he has a wealth of experience in corporate finance, investments, restructuring, and digital transformation, Mohamed comes alive when speaking about the human side of banking – helping customers meet their needs, working on offerings for small businesses, and catering to Bahrain’s diverse population (predominantly expats, very tech-savvy!) and customers who practice sharia banking, among others.

On this episode, Mohamed chats with us about navigating change, the progressive regulatory landscape for fintech in Bahrain, turning failures into lessons, and how leadership and mentoring will ultimately be his legacy.

This episode is dedicated to anyone leading an organization through uncharted waters.

  • What is beauty and why does it matter? For our Halloween episode, self-taught freelance make-up artist and model Sylvina “Slo” Lopez shares the power of make-up for identity, self-expression, and transformation. (As she points out, there’s a reason that totalitarian regimes throughout history have despised make-up.)

Famous for her magazine covers, editorials, event make-up, commercial work, and music video looks, Slo has also done workshops for MAC, NARS, Make Up For Ever, and Issy & Co, as well as product development for different beauty brands. When not doing make-up, Slo models for brands like Avon, H&M, and Float Swimwear, a profession she fell into by accident, but one which allows her to continue representing her ideas of beauty on the other side of the camera.

She discusses how finding your identity is tied to the way you choose to present yourself, the high level of trust and empathy required in her work, and how she kept creativity and collaboration alive under lockdown. We also discuss inclusivity in the beauty world, and loving the skin you’re in.

This episode is dedicated to anyone who was ever told to straighten their curls, hide their curves, or cover up their tattoos.

  • Is it possible to find the poetic in the political? Award-winning poet and writer Gian Lao shares how a poetry mentor and romantic heartbreak led him to his first job as a speechwriter for the Office of the President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Currently working in strategic communications for the private sector, including a recent stint as Communications Lead of the Metro Pacific Hospitals COVID Task Force, he is better-known for his thought-provoking, viral essays that hold a mirror to Philippine society – how we treat our security guards, the gaps in our justice system, and the inequalities exacerbated by the pandemic.

On this episode, Gian takes us back to 2010 – 2016, when he drafted policy speeches for the late President Benigno “Noynoy” S. Aquino III and his Cabinet. He gives us an empathetic, insightful, and balanced view of working inside government, including moments of humor, personal regrets, hard-won lessons, and thoughts on legacy.

While his first job may not have been easy, it definitely gave him creative material for a lifetime.

This episode is dedicated to all the good people in government, and all the good people holding governments everywhere accountable.

  • Feeling stuck in your current path? Get inspired by Michelle Easter, a former make-up artist and model who pivoted to mechanical engineering in her late 20s and now makes robotic spacecrafts for NASA.

Proof that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, our second season opener is a fascinating story of switching careers, summoning the courage to start something new, ignoring the naysayers, and following one’s curiosity.

A gifted communicator, she explains in layman’s terms the work she is doing on the Mars Perseverance rover, the Mars Sample Return project, as well as NASA’s low-cost ventilator project in response to the pandemic.

Though she has received many accolades for her work, including the Charles Elachi Early Career Achievement Award, what struck us most about Michelle was her passion for mentoring others and supporting engineering outreach.

This episode is dedicated to all the women in STEM, and to Shana Watts and Kristel Cue for making this interview possible.

  • How do we give voice to a global diaspora without reducing it to a punchline? In this bonus coffee break episode, we read the reactions we got to S1E07 guest Joaquin Pedro Valdes, specifically his Filipino Accent workshop for performers.

Joaquin's study of the Filipino accent and its place in the global narrative opens up conversations on how Filipino characters are written, portrayed, and represented in mainstream media... and how a deeper historic and cultural understanding are required to appreciate the spectrum of speech and sounds in the diaspora.

In response, romance writer Mina V. Esguerra sent us her feelings on problematic depictions of Pinoy accents in English audiobooks. Applied Linguistics expert Prof. Ron Darvin also shared research on the interplay of social class and linguistics among Filipino migrant communities, and helpful resources for actors to avoid "essentializing and exoticizing" the Filipino accent.

Along the way, we weigh in on audience reactions to the accents in Netflix's Trese.

And finally, Joaquin flips the script by getting British actors of Filipino descent to recite the Bard in Filipino, in a moving tribute to the thousands of Filipino migrant nurses working for the National Health Service all across the UK, many of whom have left their homes to live far from the ones they love.

  • Professional basketball player Sean Anthony takes us behind the scenes of the Philippine Basketball Association 2020 bubble as he gears up for another season this year. (The PBA was the first professional basketball league in Asia and remains the second oldest continuous professional basketball league in the world, after the NBA.)

A native of Canada with Filipino roots on his mother’s side, Sean played varsity hoops at McGill University before entering the PBA. (The inventor of the game of basketball, James Naismith, also studied and taught physical education at McGill University.) Now the team captain of Northport Batang Pier, Sean chats with us about favorite players, what separates the good from the great, the importance of mental conditioning, and the career path of pro ballers after the sport.

Named PBA Defensive Player of the Year by the PBA Press Corps in 2019, Sean is obviously a force to reckon with, but it’s his devotion to his family and principles that has us cheering. This Father’s Day episode is dedicated to all the sports fans, anyone trying to set new records for themselves, and all the father figures out there.

  • Margarita Villanueva is the Assistant to the Director and the Manager of Conservation at the Lopez Museum and Library in the Philippines, helping oversee the management and operations of the museum and its Conservation Center, respectively. She also served as elected Chair of the Arts & Culture Committee at the League of Corporate Foundations in the Philippines.

Prior to this, she worked in Venice at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, one of the most visited art galleries in Italy. She also worked for several years in conservation in Canada at various private laboratories and the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Marga holds Bachelors Degrees in Materials Chemistry and Art History from the University of British Columbia. She later went to Cardiff University as a Chevening scholar to obtain her Master of Science in Professional Conservation, graduating with distinction. At Cardiff, she furthered her study in the scientific approach to conservation practice and collections care.

On this episode, she shares with us her optimism for the Philippine art scene (she sees many more opportunities than limitations), the most memorable objects people have brought in for restoration, and how contemporary art gave her a whole new perspective on materials. She also shares anecdotes about why conservators should be consulted early in the architectural design process (i.e., why your airconditioning or windows may be ruining your artwork).

This episode is dedicated to those keeping our arts, heritage, and culture alive.

  • Lennard Hulsbos is a design strategist working at the intersection of business, technology, and designed experiences for clients like Deutsche Telekom, Huawei, Lenovo, Starbucks, Philips, Porsche, Uber, and Circle Economy.

His experience in building global design agencies and teams began in 2008, when he founded one of the world’s first online graphic design agencies, Cradle of Design. Len went on to help lead branding and design agencies across Asia Pacific and Europe – including Aquarius (now ServicePlan China), Designit, Spark Design, and Iris – before setting up the Netherlands outpost of the Danish firm Manyone in 2019. Projects included strategy and branding for a vegan ice cream brand under Unilever, the development of Toolkit Earth, and thought leadership on the EU Green Deal and its implications for business, before COVID-19 halted the Dutch office’s operations in 2020.

Len continues to do independent consulting in the field of strategic design, championing post-human-centric design and sustainability in product development, while advising organizations on expansion and change management.

Active in various social and political causes, Len was part of a youth-led effort helping to shape the Climate Agreement for the Dutch government. He was also part of the team awarded two UN Millennium Goals Awards with Satara, a slow fashion women’s equality NGO.

Len co-founded Circular UBI (C.UBI), an initiative that aims to develop a sustainable economic paradigm by proposing a preliminary framework to finance a universal basic income out of global resource usage, within the context of the circular economy and enabled by technology. He discusses both circularity and UBI with us today, as well as his thoughts on user rights / data privacy, and the socio-economic impact of an automated society.

This episode is dedicated to anyone trying to build bridges of understanding and live in harmony with those who have different beliefs. In this (artificially?) divided world, Len’s kind and inclusive approach to having potentially polarizing discussions is a vision of the future we can all get behind.

  • Daniella Virata is an equestrienne from a family of horse enthusiasts and competitive riders. She herself has entered several show jumping competitions around the world and earned certifications from the British Horse Society and International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI).

A stint as a riding instructor in Singapore introduced Danni to the world of equine assisted therapy, as she worked on the Equine Assisted Learning (EQUAL) program co-developed by the Equestrian Federation of Singapore to cater to at-risk youth. Her teaching standards have been approved by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH Int'l) and the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA).

Danni comes alive when talking about all things equine, including how they’ve been man's partner since the dawn of civilization, and what humans can learn from these magnificent creatures. She outlines all the hard work behind the perceived glamor (think concussions, cleaning the arena, and caring for horses with colic), strides being made for inclusivity in the sport, and how she helped spearhead emergency rescue ops for 150 ponies that had to be evacuated when Taal Volcano erupted in 2020.

Danni and her siblings now run DXD Equestrian Specialists, Inc., which offers group and private riding lessons, catering to aspiring competitors, adult leisure riders, and beginners. Headquartered at Rancho Leonor in Silang, Cavite (just outside Metro Manila), DXD’s home base is a place to relax, enjoy nature, and appreciate the simple joys of life around animals.

We hope this episode will be a breath of fresh air to animal lovers and anyone missing nature right now! Listen till the end of the episode, where we have a meditation exercise from Little Shell Yoga to soothe your spirits.

  • Joaquin Pedro Valdes recently appeared in the UK / international productions of “Miss Saigon” & “The King and I,” and “Fanny and Stella,” the first fully staged musical to open in London after the COVID lockdowns. (Bridgerton fans, this show was done at The Garden Theatre at Vauxhall.)

A professional theater actor in the Philippines from a young age, he set aside that calling for “more practical” pursuits and took up architecture and then film in college, launching his career as a director. He made films that were screened in festivals worldwide, and also made a name for himself in the industry directing commercials and music videos for nearly a decade.

He continued to star in theater productions as a break in between directing jobs, until the lure of the stage proved too strong. He took a leap of faith and decided to pursue theater full-time in the UK, going to head to head with the best performers from around the world.

On the pod, he gets candid about the ups and downs of being a professional actor, and how his previous experiences in the Philippines (as a director and actor appearing in theater, film, TV, and radio… and also a recording artist in a boy band) helped prepare him for the international scene. He also shares insights on the future of the performing arts and storytelling in the new normal.

This episode is dedicated to anyone who has relocated in pursuit of a calling, and to fellow theater fans. At a time when the arts are being defunded, it’s inspiring to see people soldiering on in service of storytelling that nourishes the soul.
