Public Information Officers and crisis communicators are working tirelessly at health departments and local, state and federal public agencies to keep everyone informed about the rapidly-changing impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and the associated restrictions and other efforts being implemented to combat its spread and save lives.

Many have been at it full speed for two or more weeks, and to further complicate things, are having to do their jobs in a work-from-home environment. Many report that they are really feeling the stress of meeting demands in a high-demand workflow, without the benefit of having workmates right there with them, and while also dealing with children in the home and other demands and distractions.

In this bonus episode, Kerry's guest, registered clinical counsellor Julia Kristina, M.A. Psych, gives specific ways to reduce stay-at-home stress so you can feel calmer. more in control, and keep doing the great work you do in this new environment.

Due to scheduling challenges, this episode was not produced in an interview-format, but comes from a special recording I asked Julia to do for me and my listeners.

  • #010 - Kerry's guest, Virginia Kerr (@thisisvirginiakerr on Instagram) is a former TV anchor-turned-entrepreneur who is rocking Instagram by applying effective TV techniques!

In this episode, Virginia talks about how to use the four different TV shows you can create on your Instagram account (using Feed, Stories, IGTV and Live) to post the same general content topic in four different ways! That means you can be on all the "channels" without having to create completely different content for each one.

She talks about how this works in TV news for different shows - it's the same concept - where you might cover the same topic or story in different newscasts, but you do it with a different emphasis each time. You make the assumption that the viewer has seen a previous version of the story, so you give it a different treatment, but at the same time you also assume the viewer has NOT seen an earlier version of the story, so you make sure that you cover the basics.

Virginia also has a great hack that allows you to put a title on your Instagram Live...even though Instagram doesn't really offer that feature yet!

You will love Virginia's energy and enthusiasm - she's a super inspiring person of faith - as well as her deeply personal story of leaving the TV anchor business after 20 years and overcoming some big obstacles and coping-struggles that blocked her from the joy and success she is experiencing today helping women entrepreneurs use video effectively.

Virginia is a wiz at video and helping you build on-camera confidence, and at the time of this posting, she's launching her "5-Day IGTV Video Challenge" (starts March 9, 2020) that is a great way for YOU to start integrating video into your business!

  • #008 - When using video for marketing, creating trust before the transaction is key! Entrepreneur Tamrin Olden gives excellent insight and advice about how to show value and build connection with your audience, as well as specific tips on what kind of content to create and video approaches that work well.

Tamrin has 16 years in local government and public safety doing public relations and communications.

She's the owner of Law Enforcement Social, which offers Public Information Officer and social media training, websites, and digital for government and public safety based organizations.

Key concepts discussed during the podcast include:

    Marketing Approach For Social Media:

Trust before transaction; don’t product push. You need to show value and get buy-in first Jab-jab-punch posting method (tip/resource > tip/resource > sale)

    Content Ideas:

What are your FAQ’s and what do you want people to know about you, your service or product You can ask people what type of content they like/want in a feed post or story post with a question sticker Take big corporate marketing concepts that you like and adapt them to your company I like to keep an ongoing note on my phone to add video ideas as I come up with them Batch recording monthly works well for me; I do two hours of recording once a month

I will even change my outfit and location to make it look like different recording sessions

    Editing:

Apps: video shop, iMovie, Adobe Premier Rush
Computer editing: Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Camtasia 60 seconds is ideal length Add closed captions/sub-titles for longer view rates Make sure you choose the appropriate size and length for the platform It’s a good idea to add a title to the cover photo so people know what the video is about before watching it (if they just see a talking head they might not be enticed to watch) Vertical/portrait sized video is best as it takes up more real estate on your phone screen but create a cover photo square size so it previews in your grid better

    Posting:

Keep your captions short and sweet; let the video speak for itself Engage and monitor insights so you can tailor your content and posting based on those statistics

    Closing Thoughts:

Give yourself grace; you don’t have to sound perfect! Marry the mission; date the model (be flexible in your methods)
