It is sometimes easy to take the sense of sight for granted, but for those people who are blind or for those with low vision, this can severely limit their independence and sense of freedom. Guide dogs are a fantastic way to help blind and low vision people get some of their freedom back. But, to raise and train a guide dog is no mean feat! There is a lot that’s involved in getting a guide dog ready to capably, safely and effectively help guide their vision impaired handler. One of the early steps in readying a guide dog for its handler is having them trained and socialised with the help of a puppy raiser family. This helps lay the groundwork and forms a foundation for the more advanced training later on in the guide dogs training journey.
Join myself Brett the Vet and special guest Alison Rubie, a guide dog puppy raiser, as we talk about what is involved in the raising of a guide dog puppy, what some of the responsibilities are, what some of the rewards are and of course what to do if you are interested in finding out more about becoming a guide dog puppy raiser yourself!Enjoy the conversation!
