    Learning languages to us aspiring polyglots changes how we see the world around us and how we interact in our everyday lives. For many of our listeners, language learning has been a great hobby with which they spend hours dedicating their lives to. Young polyglots of the world, have you heard of linguistics, want to learn more, or would be interested in majoring in this field in university?

    Polina is a Russian university student studying linguistics. Polina created a student organization at her university to bring language-enthusiasts together. Some of her hobbies include reading, watching TV series and films in other languages, making videos, and running. Polina is currently studying English, Spanish, Norwegian, French, and Greek.

  • Welcome back to the first episode of Season 3 of the Polyglot Perspective Podcast! We apologize for the hiatus and are very excited to be back! We cannot wait to share more about language learning with you all!

    Learning a language not only opens doors of opportunities but also helps give insight into another’s culture. Within the United States alone (according to 2022 data published by Ethnologue) 422 languages are spoken. The U.S., being a melting pot, consists of people from various countries holding the most mixed people in the world.

    Taylor Torres is a high school senior from Southern California currently learning Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and dabbling in lots of languages such as Korean and Thai. She is the founder of Polyglot Perspective and hopes to inspire youth from around the world to learn languages to bridge the gap between different cultures. 

    In this episode, Taylor Torres discusses her personal experience being a mixed individual in the U.S. and will be discussing what it's like growing up in a Vietnamese-Chinese-Mexican household, along with some preconceptions of mixed people. Lastly, Torres will share what motivated her to start a multilingual, multicultural polyglot youth community as well as updates for the organization.

  • Hello everyone and welcome back to the Polyglot Perspective Podcast! We've been on a bit of a hiatus for the past year but we are back and are more than ready to continue sharing both our personal experiences with language learning as well as those of various international guests with you! 

    For Season 3, we will be hearing from different voices within the language Instagram, YouTube, and social media communities. From chatting about what it's like to be a language learning creator on these platforms to sharing the truth about language related majors in university and beyond, we cultivated fascinating discussions with countless creators (some of which you might be familiar with) and are incredibly excited to share them with you!

    Going forward, all episodes will be released on Friday at 2 pm PST / 5 pm EST. The first episode of the month will be a guest episode while the others will be rant episodes hosted by Taylor and Lily.

  • Welcome back to the sixth episode of Season 2 of the Polyglot Perspective Podcast!

    When learning a language, reading, writing, listening and speaking tie into our learning journey. Among the four, many people believe speaking is the most difficult. Many learners lack confidence, and don’t know how to go about talking to native speakers in their target language.

    Sam Coates is a university student studying business analytics and accounting. Sam was born in New York but moved to Jamaica as a toddler (as his family is Jamaican) and returned to the U.S at 14. Some of his hobbies include doing track, playing soccer among other sports. Sam is currently studying Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and Spanish. Sam also has an Instagram (@samslanguageprogress)  where he posts videos of him talking with natives.

  • Welcome back to the fifth episode of Season 2 of the Polyglot Perspective Podcast!

    While language learning is often thought to only involve studying the syntax of one's target language, languages and cultures are intertwined, meaning that one must learn about their target language’s culture to truly understand the language. In this episode college student Clara Antime discusses her personal experience with intercultural communication and cultural differences. She talks with us about the importance of learning about other cultures, respecting different traditions, and developing an open-mind.

    Clara is a 20 year old French young adult who studied abroad in Spain for 3 months. Clara is majoring in LEA (Language etrangere appliqque).Clara loves studying languages, listening to music, reading books and watching movies, watching series and learning more about different cultures. Clara can speak French, English, Spanish, Russian, and Korean.

    While learning a language, have you ever felt unmotivated, tired, and lacking interest in the language which you were so passionate about? In this episode high school student Bianca Pinheiro discusses her personal experience with language burnout. She talks with us about a variety of topics such as personal experiences, how school activities interfered with language learning, as well as her methods of learning different languages.

    Bianca is a 16 year old Brazilian teenager who loves studying languages, listening to music, reading books and watching movies. She is currently a part of Polyglot Perspective as a Portuguese translator. Her mission in this organization is to share knowledge about languages to her native language.

  • How should I learn a language? The Autodidact way

    Welcome back to the third episode of Season 2 of the Polyglot Perspective Podcast!

    Are you interested in self-studying languages in addition to practicing languages in the real world? In this episode high school student Emily Hinckley discusses her journey with self-studying as well as taking classes. She talks with us about a variety of topics such as self study vs the school system, how to take the self study approach, practicing in real life, and toxic productivity. She provides her perspective on language learning and describes her experience.

    Emily is a sixteen-year-old living in the United States. She is an Irish-Ukranian-American who comes from a family with 63 cousins. She is currently intermediate to advanced in Spanish and is learning Brazilian Portuguese and Russian. Other than language learning, her hobbies include traveling, cooking, listening to music, and watching movies.

  • Welcome back to the second episode of Season 2 of the Polyglot Perspective Podcast!  

    Are you interested in learning a new language but don't know where to start? Have you tried learning a language in the past but have had unsuccessful results? In this episode, high school student Andy Zhang discusses his methods on learning new languages as well as his experience self-studying and taking language classes in school. He provides a new perspective on language learning and describes his experience adapting and opening his mind up to different cultures growing up.  

    Andy is a high school junior living in Saudi Arabia, originally from Houston, Texas. He speaks English, Chinese and French fluently, and is currently focusing on studying Turkish as well as a bit of ASL. He’s also interested in exploring conlangs and creating his own. Outside of languages he enjoys digital art and music, and plays the tuba and the guitar.

  • Welcome back to the first episode of Season 2 of the Polyglot Perspective Podcast!

    Have you ever wondered why you should start learning a language? Moreover, is learning a language even useful anymore? In season 2 episode 1, high school student Elizabeth Quinn provides her language tips, tricks, and her view on the usefulness of language learning in the year 2021.

    Elizabeth is a student from the UK currently studying German alongside art and English literature for A-levels. Although she grew up in a monolingual family, she began learning her first foreign language in secondary school and is currently learning German, Mandarin, Spanish, and Korean, while also dabbling in other languages.

    In this episode, we will be discussing why language learning is beneficial for your life both in a social and professional sense. Also, we touch on topics such as why automated language translating engines, such as Google Translate, may not be as beneficial as you might think. In this episode, Elizabeth shares with us her drive for learning languages and information about her time studying abroad in Germany as well as fun anecdotes centering around conversing with natives.   • Welcome to another episode of the Polyglot Perspective Podcast!

    Have you ever struggled to embrace your cultural identity? In episode six, college language learner, Lily Burke shares her story about being born in China, but growing up in the United States as an American adoptee.

    Lily Burke is a New York university student who currently speaks 6 languages! Lily was born in China but was adopted by an American family and is currently studying Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Korean, Indonesian, and Cantonese. She is also one of our Mandarin translators here at Polyglot Perspective. 

    In this episode, we discuss the challenges that multicultural students deal with on a daily basis, particularly in terms of discovering and staying in touch with their cultural identity. We also talk about the misconceptions that Lily, and other adoptees, face, and how to best approach them, as well as some of our favorite methods to learn languages whilst also having fun.     Bella was born and currently resides in California, and grew up in a bilingual household, with her parents speaking both Armenian and English with her at home. She has also been studying Spanish in and out of school for the past few years and began developing a passion for languages and culture in middle school.

    In this episode, we discuss the struggles of speaking a foreign language with natives and being confident in your language abilities, as well as staying connected to your family's heritage when being born in America and the limited opportunities available for POC in school. While Bella feels connected with her culture at home with her family, she explains the difficulties of finding this kind of support at school. She speaks Mandarin Chinese, is currently learning Spanish in school, understands Taiwanese, Korean, and Japanese, and is a native English speaker. Due to her experiences traveling to countless countries such as Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Croatia, Candice was inspired to connect with these foreign lands and cultures on a more profound level.

    In this episode, we discuss the challenges Candice faces with motivation when studying languages, her passion for choosing a form of studying material that aligns with her interests and motivations, and the significance of learning languages as a teenager.
