This first ever LIVE episode was a fundraiser supporting the gorgeous queer intersectional Common Press bookshop in East London !!
I interviewed Gabi, one of the brilliant booksellers and event organisers who works there, in a brilliantly funny, tender, and unpredictable conversation. Tune in for the meet-cutes and morning afters Gabi has witnessed in the bookshop, disgusting horror book recommendations, and why, specifically, Gabi is 'such a dumb b*tch'. We also had some really delightful queer joys shared by the audience, including a gay civil partnership and a new lesbian announcement !!
We raised £280 from the live recording :D Thank you all so much !

Okay no, we don’t arm wrestle because that would be terrible audio content, but we do fight each other verbally really far more than you'd expect. Direct quote from my esteemed guest: 'Lily, why don't you just like lift a fucking weight?'
You recognise Lex from their literally millions of bestselling and award-winning historicalish romcom novels (which are all absolutely excellent, buy them), as well as from their attendance at literally millions of MUNA concerts. In this conversation, Lex gives you some ASMR from their main character energy coffee while discussing the joys of fandom addiction, ‘making’ Robin Hood gay, and being quietly queer in your own home.
Had an awful lot of QJ recording this, I hope get it listening too. See you all at the gym!
⚔️
You must buy all Lex's books here:

The delightful Gay's the Word bookseller on butch haircuts, queer poetry retreats, and the mother of all queer joys – raising your son in an extended chosen family. (Sorry but imagine how cool this baby is going to become – his literal first film was Rebel Dykes?!) Also, of course, many, many expert queer joy book recommendations.
Knitting is gay, crochet is lesbian, quilting is bi. Can any crafty queers confirm if this is scientifically accurate?

What could bring more 'queer joy' than a gay clown?
Here's a collaborative performance piece on the theme of friendship (otherwise called 'a chat') with the drag king, clown, and best friend Riss Obolensky (aka King Herod). This episode is about how much we hate sincerity, and, sincerely, how much we love each other.
Whether you're into The Artist's Way or MUNA's The One That Got Away, spirituality or Gossip Girl, soberness or being a little freak on the dance floor (not the sexy kind), I hope you enjoy this mischief. Riss and I platonically flirt with each other by reminiscing about our ironing board meet-cute, having an unconventional threesome (involves a dead rat), writing a beloved character based on them, and getting matching tattoos of an in-joke.
You can follow Riss on instagram @rissobolensky.
Shout-outs to:
🤡 Top of the Slops drag competition
🤡 Ecstatic dance
🤡 The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron
🤡 MUNA
🤡 My Own Worst Enemy by Lily Lindon – specifically the very lovable character of Raphy

The writer of A Trans Man Walks Into a Gay Bar on beautifully mundane queer joys – from meal deals, team sports (/the drinks afterwards), Doctor Who, to... yes… gay sex.
Harry and I each work on both the author and editor sides of publishing queer books, so we also enjoy fanboying the writings of Lou Sullivan, Travis Alabanza, and Virginia Woolf!
From YOU, listener, I seek recommendations of beginner queer team sports you love 2 play. My priority is, of course, good vibes.
Shout-outs to:
🏉 Pride in Touch
⚽️ TRUK United FC
⚽️ Suzi Ruffell and Maisie Adam’s BIG KICK ENERGY podcast
🍔 Travis Alabanza's Burgerz Playtext: ‘Queer joy gives us height, but the hardships give us depth, and that range as queer people makes us who we are, that ability to carry both at the same time’
🛌 Juno Roche’s QUEER SEX
🎩 YOUNGMAN: Lou Sullivan’s diaries
💜 The Love Letters of Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West

"Queer joy is liberation – it's when being queer is something you’re not scared of or worried about anymore. You get to be in the fun bit."
The chic author, fashion blogger and cat-cheerleader Bethany Rutter becomes my own professional oracle – and can be yours too! Gain abundant advice for your dating era, how to run a queer dance night, the surprising challenges of writing a queer character who's already happy, and the best films for bisexual brats.
Bethany Shouts Out to:
☀️ Her now defunct club night Dancing On My Own
🎥 The bi films Shiva Baby and Passages
🎧 Bicon Ell Potter who has done such a gorgeous job of Bethany’s audiobooks
💫 Buy Bethany's brilliant Big Date Energy here!

The phenomenal award-winning fantasy author Tasha Suri on the queer joys of yearning, trash lesbians, and monster fucking. We ask hard-hitting questions like: how queer is your D&D character? What type of gay cowboy are you? And when will someone step up and write an essay on Tasha’s work through the lens of kink power exchange?
"Queer Joy is the empowering and healing joy you take in the things that straight people tell you you shouldn’t take joy in."
Tasha recommends:
😈 Queer revenge fantasy and Monster Fucking: The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo (ebook or ship from US here)
😈 Vienna Teng – for the quintessentially lesbian experience of lying on your bed, listening to a woman sing about feelings
😈 Ru Paul’s Drag Race – specifically the Lana Del Rio season, and specifically watching it a few years ago

'What is the gayest vape flavour?', 'Where are you on the U-Haul spectrum?' and, urgently, 'Are you a Mummy, Daddy, or Baby?'
In this first episode of the QueeJo podcast, I live, laugh, lol with the very gorgeous Laura Kay – who writes gay books by dummies for dummies. She launches her own rival podcast, Queer Sad, challenges me to have a snog in a cinema, and reveals once and for all whether she and I are actually in a romantic relationship.
‘Queer Joy means that if I could choose to be queer I would. It’s being part of the best club. It’s having an in-joke that no one else understands.'
Laura shouts-out to:
☀️ Sheffield's Juno Books for 'the best night of my life'
☀️ Bethany Rutter's Big Date Energy (you can listen to Bethany on this very pod! Or also buy her book here!)
☀️ To me, Lily Lindon, a rare adult-made best friend in this cruel world :')
💫 Find Laura's books Wild Things, Tell Me Everything, and The Split here, and her instagram here.
