Imogen Bailey, Associate Editor of Ragtrader magazine and host of Ragtrader Radio, talks with Kathmandu’s Chief Customer Officer, Eva Barrett.
In this episode we discuss the launch of Biodown, Khathmandu’s first completely biodegradable jacket which is a part of their net zero waste target by 2025. This activation was undertaken in conjunction with sustainability activist Joost Bakker and Apparel, and was hosted over 3 days in Fed Square in Melbourne.
We then move onto exploring the design considerations of the jacket and get an insight into Kathmandu’s wider mission to move towards eco-friendly and circular products. This can be seen in their partnership with the Renewal Workshop, which is a part of their circularity mapping program that aims to reduce the amount of textiles going to landfill.
This opens the discussion to Kathmandu’s B Corp status and their positive workplace culture initiatives. We also discuss the impact that the return of travelling and exploring nature after COVID lockdowns has had on their business and get an insight into the name change from Kathmandu Holdings to KMD Brands, which hosts the major outdoor brands Ripcurl, Oboz and Kathmandu.
We wrap up by looking at the plans for Kathmandu in 2022 which aims to build upon the brand and launch internationally in France, Germany, Canada and the UK in September.

Imogen Bailey, Associate Editor of Ragtrader magazine and host of Ragtrader Radio, talks with Richard Facioni, ACTA Capital founder and CEO, about the changes made by their brands to accommodate impacts from COVID.
We start by reviewing Richard's business experience, the retail brands he has invested in and how each of them has evolved through the pandemic to serve an ever-changing client base, including the opportunities and restrictions lockdowns have brought to fashion-focused retailers. Richard reveals how his brands have reduced revenues and increased profits despite closing over 200 physical stores.
The discussion also identifies the maturing of customer trends and needs that can be met through collaborative efforts, personalised experiences and the judicious combination of online and offline shopping. Furthermore, we touch upon customer structures that have changed permanently and those that may revert to their pre-COVID forms.
We wrap up the episode with a discussion of the pandemic's unpredictable and different effects on brands as well as a comparison of consumer changes during lockdowns in 2020 and 2021. Richard also gives keen insights into the varied aspects of the fashion retail industry from both the online and physical worlds.

Imogen Bailey, Associate Editor of Ragtrader magazine and host of Ragtrader Radio, talks with Larry Kestelman, executive chairman of LK Group, about investing in fashion businesses and changes he sees in consumer behaviour over the next 12 to 18 months.
We start by discussing Larry's approach to investing in fashion businesses, the key things LK Group can bring and the importance of maintaining brands. We then review the impacts COVID has had on fashion businesses along with the lessons learned and changes made to continue operating.
Larry also stresses that it is not enough to be in love with fashion, highlighting the need to monitor buying trends and adjust accordingly. He also provides his views on how the Australian retail market will respond to the easing of restrictions, this year's Black Friday event and Christmas.
The discussion then moves on to balancing online and physical presence, determining where to locate stores and LK Group's willingness to invest for long term growth rather than short term gain. This leads to a general discussion on private equity and the importance of understanding how it operates if you're considering selling to a private equity firm.
We wrap up the episode with Larry's future plans for the brands they own, how they plan to grow them and the potential for acquiring others.
