Looking back on some of the best moments from the first 10 episodes of the Talking about Nothing series!
-
For the new listeners of the podcast, all the episodes titled “Talking about Nothing” are simply recordings of me talking about whatever comes to mind at the moment. The idea is that you’ll get a chance to hear what a native speaker sounds like when he’s speaking naturally without any preparation. As you will see once you listen to the episodes, my mind tends to travel from one place to another very quickly, and I end up talking about a bunch of random topics.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey to nowhere in particular.

John Gottman’s theory on Emotional Bids highlights an often overlooked aspect of communication; the way we respond to those who need something from us. There are 3 typical responses in situations like these: turning towards, turning away, and turning against. And you might be surprised how often you engage in each of these behaviors, as well as the effect it’s having on your relationships.

“What do you do (for a living)?” — It’s one of the most common questions you’ll get asked as an adult at social gatherings. Doesn’t matter if it’s a bar, a café, a networking event, or a family reunion. Work tends to be what occupies the majority of people’s time, so naturally, this is what people will ask about when meeting each other for the first time. But as I get older, I tend to appreciate this question less and less because although it’s meant to be a conversation starter, it usually has the opposite effect.

Our self-centered nature often leads us to find problems with everyone and everything in our environment. When dealing with these problems, we usually try to make external changes as opposed to internal ones. In this episode, we’ll explore the pros and cons of this approach, as well as a healthier alternative that’ll lead to less conflicts and more internal peace.

We’re diving into the toxic mindset that stops so many of my Latino friends from learning to speak English proficiently. I’m going to talk about cultural stigmas, mental rigidity, self-esteem, and how all of these things have a major influence on your ability to learn and grow as an English speaker (and a human being). If you can make the corrections that I suggest in this episode, you’ll be putting yourself on the path to proficiency in this language. You’ll realize that no matter what goal you’re trying to achieve, it all starts with having the proper mindset!
