Going through the autism assessment process for your child can feel overwhelming, confusing, and emotional. In this episode of Real Talk With Rhi, Iām sharing my experience of navigating my son Williamās autism diagnosis ā from the early signs, the assessment process, and the moment a professional told me heād never be in mainstream school (she was wrong!).
This journey was the first step in understanding not just William, but all of my children, and it completely changed the way I approach parenting. If youāre currently navigating an autism assessment for your child, I hope this helps you feel more prepared, supported, and less alone.ā”ļø Get the autism resource I wish someone had given me when my children were being assessed - https://mummyoffour.com/100asd

If you're going through the autism assessment process with your child, I see you. Having been through this four times myself, I know just how taxing, stressful, frustrating, and never-ending it can feel.
So many parents Iāve spoken to have felt dismissed, judged, and even gaslit at some point during the process. You bring up concerns about your child, only to be met with āThey seem fine to me,ā or āAll kids do that.ā Schools, family members, even professionals can leave you doubting yourself, making you wonder if youāre imagining things.
I want you to know: you are not alone.
This post isnāt just about the practical steps of the assessment process (though I have a whole guide on that if you need it). Instead, I want to focus on what we as parents need to do to stay strong, advocate effectively, and manage the emotional toll that this process can take.

Homework time can be a battle for any family, but for children with ASD, it often brings unique challenges. In this episode, Iām sharing my personal experience as a parent of children with autism who mask at school, only to feel overwhelmed and frustrated when itās time to tackle homework at home.
Iāll explain why masking, perfectionism, and sensory challenges make homework especially tough, and why teachers might not always see the full picture. Most importantly, Iāll share the strategies that have worked for us: starting early, breaking tasks into manageable steps, making homework fun, and creating a supportive environment that meets their needs.
Whether youāre a parent struggling with similar challenges or looking for practical tips to make homework time more manageable, this episode is packed with relatable stories and actionable ideas to help your family thrive.

In this heartfelt episode, I sit down with my 20-year-old son to talk about his experience being diagnosed with autism in his late teens. At the time, he wasnāt happy about being assessed, but now he appreciates the clarity and self-understanding his diagnosis provides.
Weāll reflect on his childhood, the signs I missed, and the moment he first thought he might be autistic. Together, weāll discuss the challenging assessment process ā from the emotional online meeting to the face-to-face evaluation during COVID ā and how he felt then versus how he feels now.
Whether you're a parent considering an autism assessment for your child or a teen unsure about taking that step, this episode offers honest insights, personal reflections, and a powerful message: the earlier, the better.
Listen until the end for his heartfelt advice to anyone in a similar position.

Trigger Warning: This episode includes discussions about weight gain, weight loss, and emotional eating.
This past year, my health hit an all-time low. Between juggling kids, work deadlines, and lifeās endless surprises, I completely lost sight of self-care. Exercise was the first thing to go, followed by healthy eating, leaving me stress-eating entire Easter eggs at my desk. Sound familiar? In this episode, Iām sharing the story of how I turned things aroundāfrom rearranging my workspace and investing in a walking pad to building small habits that stuck. Iāll dive into how I curbed my sugar cravings, prioritised protein, and even started ADHD medication (spoiler: the weight loss wasnāt because of the meds!).
As I head into 2025, Iām carrying these healthy habits with me: staying active, prioritising sleep, making time for joy, and embracing movement I love. If youāre feeling overwhelmed or stuck, this episode is for you.
Letās talk about realistic changes, ditching the all-or-nothing mindset, and finding balance that works for YOU.

New Yearās resolutions feel so serious, donāt they? They sound like something set in stone ā and thatās where the problem starts. Resolutions feel rigid and unforgiving, which doesnāt suit the flexible, creative, ever-changing nature of an ADHD brain.
Another issue is that resolutions often focus on big, long-term changes without any immediate pay-off. ADHD brains thrive on dopamine (the feel-good chemical) from small wins, not far-off, long-term rewards. If itās boring or too far away, our brains justā¦ switch off.
Thatās why instead of New Yearās resolutions, I recommend focusing on goals instead. Goals are flexible, personal, and ā most importantly ā achievable. Even better, I like to break my goals down into monthly goals instead of yearly goals. This makes them smaller, more manageable, and gives you 12 fresh starts throughout the year.
If you like the idea of monthly goal setting, Iāve created the Organised Year Planner to help you do exactly that. Itās a printable tool where you can break down your big goals into monthly targets, track progress, and celebrate your wins ā all in a way that works for an ADHD brain.
