As we apply Step 8, we’re seeking a burning desire to make things right.
-
In Step 8, we list all the people who e been harmed by our wrong-doing. Then, we ask God to do the deep work of preparing us to be the catalyst for healing.

To complete this step, we must lower ourselves before God. That is, be humble. Then we ask him to take all the ugly junk from steps 4-6, and remove it from us. This is the hinge on which the entire process turns. The previous steps brought us here. The freedom we find in Step 7 empowers all the following steps.
-
In Step 7, we humbly ask God to remove all our shortcomings. All…it’s a big word for just three letters! But, we’ve come to believe in, and trust, a big God!
-
There’s good reason that the “Serenity Prayer” has been an integral part of 12-step recovery from the earliest days. It becomes our guide to implementing Step 6.
-
In Step 6, we come to the point that we are ENTIRELY ready to let God remove our failure, our guilt, and our sin. The previous 5 steps have empowered this one. Now, it’s time to take out my trash! And never let it come back.
-
I confess the nature of my moral failing to God, to myself, and to one other. By naming it, I can define it, and send it out of my heart.
-
In Step 5, we confess - to God, ourselves, and one other person…the nature, the root…of our wrongs. It’s a big step. But, it has a very meaningful purpose.
-
At first, this step seems intimidating. But those who dive in fearlessly, emerge free and clear-headed!
-
In my hurts, habits, and hang-ups…I’ve learned to hide. I’ve hidden my faults and failures, hidden my short-comings, hidden my addiction, hidden my past, hidden myself…even from myself. Step 4 calls us out into the light of truth. This is not easy. This is not simple. This requires us to finally be totally honest. But, THIS is the way to freedom!
-
If God is truly to have control, I must consciously relinquish both the thing…and the lying that I’ve built to protect it all and myself. I must do the hard work of trusting God’s control.
-
In Step 3, we “make a decision” to hand over our entire life…the steering wheel…to God’s control. It’s a big step, but it’s the only way to healing and restoration.
-
In this application, we take action to begin to trust that God can save us.
-
In Step 1, we came to the truth that we have been unable to save ourselves. In Step 2, we turn over control of our lives to the only One who CAN save us.
-
An exercise designed to bring us to some honest and stark truthfulness with ourselves. “We admitted to ourselves…” is a tough first step, but without it, the journey never gets underway.
-
AA starts here - at POWERLESSNESS and the resulting unmanageability. The scripture says as much! The scriptures we use in Step 1 are: Proverbs 26:11; Proverbs 25:28; Romans 7:15-24; and Romans 3:22-23. Don’t rush this step! Everything that follows is built on the basic truth of my own powerlessness. If we don’t accept this first truth, we WILL be right back here again. Work this step until you are perfectly at peace knowing “I’m a mess. This can’t continue. My life won’t last like this.” When you can admit and understand that “I’m the real problem,” then you’re ready to hear about the true solution!

Life has left each of us with hurts, habits, and hang-ups that have kept us from being free and whole. But, scripture gives us hope!
