Exclusive Better Man interviews!
We’re delighted to welcome not one, but FIVE actors from Robbie’s biopic, Better Man, onto this very special episode of the podcast!
We chat with the guys who play Take That: Jake Simmance (Gary Barlow), Jesse Hyde (Mark Owen), Chase Vollenweider (Jason Orange) and Liam Head (Howard Donald). This is the first joint interview the four actors have given and it’s as fun and fascinating as you’d hope, especially as they’ve become best friends in real life!
As if that wasn’t exciting enough, we also bring you ANOTHER interview, with Frazer Hadfield who plays Robbie’s friend ‘Nate’ in Better Man!
We hear about all of their audition processes, how they prepared for their roles and what their favourites scenes to film were. They reflect on the cultural significance of Take That & Robbie and tell us about the times they’ve seen Robbie live or met him.
They celebrate Jonno Davies’s incredible portrayal of Robbie, discuss the technical marvels of filmmaking, and share the challenges of costume and makeup.
They share insights into their characters, the challenges they faced, and the nostalgia and personal connections associated with Robbie and Take That’s music.
This is definitely an episode you won’t want to miss!

Did you love the Boybands Forever documentary which Robbie was featured in recently? It was a great show, but it was also really sad to hear the negative sides of what most of the 90s/00s boybands went through. They each discussed their rise to fame and what they hysteria was like, but also how it affected their mental health, and left some of them with no money in the end.
There’s one 90s boyband member who’s been discussing this topic and more with other pop stars on his own YouTube channel, The Accidental Pop Star, for a while. So, we’re thrilled to be joined by Ally Begg from Bad Boys Inc to hear about his 90s boyband experience, as well as his memories of meeting and seeing Robbie live many times.
Bad Boys Inc had 6 Top 40 singles and a Top 20 album and were created by one of Take That’s early producers, Ian Levine, to rival Take That. Ally fills us in on how he felt about that, what being in Bad Boys Inc was like and why the band split after just one album. He also tells us what happened the first time he met Take That, and why he ended up going to some of Robbie’s earliest solo gigs and rehearsal shows. Robbie once suggested a put down to use with anyone being snide, that Ally still uses to this day!

We’re thrilled to welcome the co-writers of Morning Sun and many more incredible tracks to the podcast - Richard Scott and Scott Ralph. We’re excited that Rich has returned to the show after we interviewed him and his brothers Kelvin Andrews and Danny Spencer in 2022.
This time we’re also joined by their longtime friend Scott Ralph, the final quarter of Robbie’s songwriting crew from Stoke-On-Trent. Scott shares what happened when he was invited to LA to write with Robbie alongside his friends, and recalls some hilarious (and embarrassing!) moments.
Rich and Scott have penned lots of swing-style songs with Robbie such as Soda Pop and On The Fence, as well as Under The Radar classics like Super Tony and Underkill. We hear about UFO hunts and an impromptu Gollum cameo at a BRITS after-party - we didn’t stop laughing throughout and can see why Rob loves writing with his Stokie mates.

Today’s extra special guest has worked with Robbie longer than anyone else in his solo career. Chris Briggs has been Robbie’s A&R man since 1996, soon after he left Take That. Chris has been by Rob’s side even longer than his management.
Chris shares never heard before stories about the launch of Rob’s solo career: how he came to work with Guy Chambers and the rest of his band, what happened when he went to Miami to work with Desmond Child, how Life Thru A Lens was recorded, and what many record company execs really thought of Robbie ‘pre-Angels’. We also hear which songwriter Rob failed to click with prior to Guy. Chris explains what A&R actually involves, and how he ended up in that role.
Chris has also worked with a plethora of other artists including ABC, Blondie, Def Leppard, Dire Straits, Big Country, Olly Murs, Laura Marling, Starsailor and Geri Halliwell. He won A&R of the year at the Music Producers Guilds Awards in 2016.
You’ll be able to hear part two of this interview in our next episode.
