  • Where have we been? Well, it's a bit of a story, but not as harrowing as the The First Omen (2024). As we dive into the prequel to the original Omen (which we reviewed back in EP67), we discuss the preposterousness of the evil plan, why does the devil like incest, are all the orphans children of the devil, Father Brennan is no spymaster, and where is this Franchise going? Plus some horror news about our favourite bad movie, the one line challenge and the Running Scared Award.

  • What is a smile when it's disingenuous? What is it covering up? Parker Finn's directorial debut Smile (2022) uses trauma not just as a theme but as an actual device to transfer a horrible demon between unsuspecting witnesses. Borrowing from Hereditary, It Follows and the Ring, among others, we argue Smile still brings something fresh and unique to horror genre. We ask the big questions: Did Rose kill the cat? Do we need the inability to communicate cliche? Or the annoying b-characters? Is the monster physically real? Does it pop into a room like a Leprechaun? Is the monster from REC and Barbarian popping up in everything these days? Plus we look at the Monster Metrics and the ASPM rate is off the charts!

  • Oh man, it's time to do the Omen (1976). One of the most influential horror movies of the 70s, Richard Donner's film about US Ambassador, Robert Thorn, and his wife raising the AntiChrist would set off a franchise that was revisited in 2024. Running Scared co-hosts Jamie and Rob have a lot to say about dogs in horror movies, off-leash protocols, the logistics of hiring a nanny, a spin on "the library scene", Jerry Goldsmith's score, and a whole lot more. Plus another Monster Metrics segment where we measure the dread factor, dog alert moments and anticipated scares per minute.

  • "Ya so, it's a security guard job at an abandoned arcade where the ghosts of dead children possess animatronics and murder said security guards. When can you start?"
A community... paralyzed by... what, we're not sure. Why haven't they condemned this place? That one patrol cop sure seems to know a lot about the missing children case and about the murdered security guards. Funny how they never investigate the place where they were murdered. Oh well. It's the movie adaptation of the game kids love to hide from their parents! Who doesn't like pizza and animatronics?

  • Is a franchise a blessing or a burden? Running Scared co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts take apart the latest edition in the Exorcist franchise and look at how it echoed and subverted the original classic film from 1973. It gets heated between Rob and Jamie when we ask the big questions. Was scripted racial tension edited out of the final cut? Did the opening scene echo the original or subvert it? Do our expectations bog down our read of this film, or are we looking for fan service? Does Priest "Wild Thing" Vaughn save the day in the ninth inning? Or does it take a community of spiritual healers to take on Panzuzu? Why does Rob keep calling him Panzu and Blumhouse "Bloom house"? All will be answered but you must choose to listen!

  • Take the apocalyptic tone of a zombie film and swap in the unrelenting dread of demonic possessions and you have a starting point to enter the critically acclaimed When Evil Lurks (2023) by director Demián Rugna.

TRIGGER WARNING. This film depicts violence towards children and child death. Our review discusses this aspect of the film. If this subject makes you uncomfortable, we warn that this film and review might not be something you want to listen to.

Co-hosts Jamie Roberts and Robert Lendrum discuss the mechanics of the rules in this film, bodily fluids, you can't kill Aquaman with water, Ruiz the agitated landlord, the main character Pedro aka Yelly McYellerson aka Major Payne, worst sidekicks, plus Jamie tries to redeem himself on the One Line Challenge, another edition of Monster Metrics, and as always, the Running Scared Award. It all ends with a boil full of happiness for everyone.

  • Happy Holidays Scaredy Cats! For this year's holiday pod, cohosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts lean into action thriller and Christmas classic Die Hard 2 (1990) starring Bruce Willis as John McClane. We enter the debate surrounding this film's status as a Christmas movie, discuss the everyman vs. the supermen, air traffic safety mishaps, how not to exchange gifts in public if you're evil, naked Tae Bo, and we compare this film and the villains to it's predecessor. It's the action packed, murderous and R rated version of Home Alone!

  • Uh oh. Co-hosts, Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts disagree on the realism of the teenage horror drama "Talk to Me". Twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou make their directorial debut on this highly praised modern-day take on the ouija board, in which teens use the severed hand of a median to get high and converse with the dead! We ask the tough questions: does this film propagate a stereotype of stupid teenagers? Do they have a plan? Did Jamie ever have a plan during his teenage antics? Is this the worst dog in horror movie history? How will they franchise this story? Plus we take another look at the numbers in our new segment Monster Metrics! Shake hands with the devil (or some ugly gross guy from Limbo named Quain) and let to us in to your ear buds to talk about Talk to Me.

  • Happy Halloween Scaredy Cats! After a little break, The Running Scared boys are back with a film that's all about parenting by the book - it's just the worst book you could possibly parent by: the Babadook (2014)! In this episode we tackle the state of masculinity in Australia, kids with high anxiety, unhelpful school administrators, house painting and hanging pictures, bedtime book choices and opportunistic f@*k bois like Robbie. Plus, our reviews always give you the eyeball test, but now we're going to look at the numbers as we introduce a brand new segment: Monster Metrics! It's a frightfully good listen for Halloween night!

  • Co-hosts Jamie and Rob but heads over the genre mashup film "As Above So Below". A 2014 John Erick Dowdle film, it combines a little Blair Witch handheld horror, with a sprinkle of Harry Potter magic with a few heaping table spoons of Indiana Jones mystery and adventure to cook up a unique, although somewhat muddy, voyage into the gates of Hell under the Paris Catacombs. What genre does this film lean on the most and does it succeed? Is the lead character a charming female Indiana Jones or a narcissist who puts others in constant danger? When does the supernatural stuff start in this film and why? Who the hell is Zed?! Is the handheld horror movie genre over? Will Rob pronounce "Iran" properly by the end of the pod? You might want to stand on your head while listening to this one because it's about to get inverted in ʍolǝq oS ǝʌoq∀ s∀.

  • Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 "Friday the 13th" was a slasher in the ilk of Halloween. Could the creators possibly have known that they were embarking on a franchise that would take the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, to New York City, the midwest, space and even Hell? We go back to the film that started it all and ask the big questions; Why do small town folk always turn to look at the new person who enters the restaurant? How did Crazy Ralph get into the pantry? We explore Mrs. Voorhees motivation. Is Pamela Voorhees a trained assassin? Let's discuss the leadership skills of Steve, the camp manager. We put forth a new theory about the origin of Jason Voorhees.

  • If humanity has to leave Earth in search of a new home are we still human when we get to our destination? We guess that's the question that the sci-fi horror Pandorum (2009) is asking... or maybe it's what happens if you add the biker guys from Mad Max: Fury Road to Event Horizon? This genre bending mashup of horror, 90s video games, hockey pads and blue neon has co-hosts Jamie Roberts and Rob Lendrum trading jabs as they debate the onion peel story arch, the casting and the characters. What if Norman Reedus had been the star? Why is there no checklist available when waking up from hyper sleep? Why do sci-fi movies always place the hyper sleep pods upright? Does this film depict the worst possible way to wake up? It's a teenage boy from the 90s' wet dream as our hero, a hot babe and a kung fu master battle mutants in a metal death trap in space (or is it???)!

  • Director/Producer Elizabeth Banks takes us back to a simpler time in American history when there were no cell phones, cocaine was delivered by plane and bears ruled with an iron fist. Based on a true story, Cocaine Bear (2023) posits that if there is anything worse than encountering a bear in the wild, it's encountering a cocaine bear in the wild. An impressive cast, a great concept, but do we get the gore and over-the-top comedy we are hoping for? Co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts go nose deep into a creature feature that tries to find the balance between laughs and lacerations. Plus, Jamie tells a few bear stories of his own.
