The smell that launched a thousand ships, if there was one, it would probably be wafting from some maiden absolutely doused in any cheirosa of choice from Sol De Janeiro's perfume mists. We have Maggie Arms and Liza Henowitz from the product side to talk to us about the Sol De Janeiro scent philosophy, some top-tier Cheirosa combos, and what makes their perfume mists just so... that girl.

Aroma is the singular fragrance of Costa Brazil, one recognizable by its wooden box "bottle" and unforgettable by its deeply resinous and earthy... aroma. We have Francisco Costa on this episode to talk about his trips to the Amazon, which led to the creation of this very popular scent, and the importance of having a point of view through scent.

We have Mark and Nick Holmes, the father & son duo of Bianco Profumo — a new Chicago-based fragrance brand that captures the Italian-Americana of the '80s and '90s. In their words: "We do it big. Our hair is perfectly spritzed into place, we speak ten decibels louder than everyone else, we’re the life of every party, and we smell f**king terrific." Their debut launch of three scents immediately grabbed our attention (not hard with these scent profiles: a black cherry leather jacket, a ripe tomato garden, and the modern Cool Water of today) and from what we learn in this episode, this is just the beginning for Bianco Profumo.

Eleasium's mystically oceanic and intuition-formed debut scent is a single perfume oil inspired by dark, cold water, pomegranates, mermaids, seashells, pearls, and...attachment theory. We have Courtney Brunson, founder of Eleasium (and our former colleague from xoJane days) on this episode to chat about her career in brand copy and product development, moving to Paris, and making her first fragrance, Attachment Oil.

Classic gameboard game turned film, and now perfume brand, Clue Perfumery is such a novel take on the smells of everyday surroundings: the forest floor, church pews, a dusty lightbulb, and more curious objects. Perfumer and co-founder Laura Oberwetter comes on the pod for this episode about all things Clue Perfumery (Those custom caps! Designing the bottles and branding! Making a beer scent!).

We have Noah Virgile of Amphora Parfums on this episode to talk about their breakout debut collection that we've personally fallen for, taking perfume classes and creating scents, their growing vintage Mugler flanker collection, and the joy of finding new ways to self-express through makeup, scent, eyebrow bleaching, you name it. This is such a great chat for anyone who wants to escape the cycle of perpetual performance by redefining your experiences with scent.

Before the tomato-ssance, there was Flamingo Estate. Richard Christiansen's humble Los Angeles farm is where the vegetal scent trend gained the luxury home reputation. His home, place of work, and brand has quickly made a name for itself in all things farm-to-credenza, agriculture awareness, farmer-friendly, and salt (and herb, and flower, and vine) of the earth. Christiansen chats to us about the COVID-driven collapse of his creative agency that led to his rebirth as a farmer, the importance of ritual and ceremony, and how he personally texts and calls Flamingo Estate's top customers every week (if that's you, please text him back, it's not a bot, we swear!).

You'll find NYC's newest and coolest fragrance boutique in South Williamsburg. For those who wander further from the beaten path of the neighborhood's main drag, at Stéle you can smell some of the most unique and hard-to-find fragrance brands you've only seen online.
In this episode we speak with founders and shopkeeps, Jake & Matt Belanger about how they built the shop, the fragrance community, the difference between concepts and notes, and what makes a really good smell.
Some of the new scents we smelled in episode:

Imagine only being able to make a perfume when the raw materials are in peak season. That's how April Gargiulo developed Understory, the singular perfume oil from her brand Vintner's Daughter. A year after its original launch, it's back again—round 2—with some slightly evolved aromatic tweaks. This is how a winemaker creates a perfume oil.

This, as well as other hard-hitting listener questions, are included in this week's Q&A episode. Enjoy!
We discuss: Sable's Die Hot With A Vengeance perfume launch event at Stèle. Why do They (Big Fragrance) keep trying to make perfume layering happen? Byredo 1996 is allegedly coming back. What fragrances belong in a museum? Perfume snobbery. The ideal time to have sex. The impending 'beauty is horror' cultural genre. What brands are banned from the pod. And much more...

Here's a one-off special, a minor departure, a host-turned-guest episode where Tynan interviews Sable about her debut essay collection Die Hot With A Vengeance. We cover the process of the book deal, the writing of the book, the convoluted nature of our current beauty culture and the precarious positions we find ourselves in for its pursuit, and (almost) everything you'd want to know about the book of the summer — because it's officially out today!
You can also find the perfume made for the book of the same name here, which we covered in a previous episode.
