  • Hello to all our beautiful Denim Star, Sock Stars out there! Here’s wishing everybody an amazing 2024! And speaking of 2024, this year marks a special occasion in that, it only happens once, every 4 years.  Yes you got it. We’re talking about leap year.  It’s a Leap Year this year!!  Remember that old Mother Goose Leap Year rhyme: “Thirty days hath September, April, June and November.  All the rest have thirty-one, Excepting February alone, And that has twenty-eight days clear And twenty-nine in each leap year.” And for those of you who need a Leap Year 101 refresher course.  Here she goes.  For millennia, human beings have had a 0.24219 problem.  It’s that pesky extra five hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds at the end of Earth’s 365-day journey around the Sun. And for as long as we’re here on planet earth and want to keep
track of the date, that number will always be there to cause a problem. Listen in with myself Emma and Billie take a deep dive as we take a look at this forgotten date on the calendar and look at some of the leaps and bounds of February 29th that we know about!

  • This new year weā€™ll take a deep dive and have a giggle looking back on 2023 with some of the positive news items that stood out, as well as fashion news that was trending as well as, you guessed it, we have a scandal, and it was, believe it or not, a ā€œsocks and sandals scandalā€ like no other. We havenā€™t discussed a fashionscandal for quite some time have we? Was it ā€œmanklesā€? So without further adieu, letā€™s jump right in, the temperature is perfect haha!

We also take this time to chat about what we can do to appreciate our fellow man when it comes to giving to our loved ones, neighbours, friends and strangers, during our daily struggles that we sometimes come up against, along our journey of life. While, not to mention, taking the time to celebrate the littlest and simplest of grateful moments, when they do come our way. So without further adieu, letā€™s dive right in, and take a look at some of the great Christmas giving ideas, that give, this Xmas. Listen in with me Emma and Billie on this hot topic!

  • So what exactly is adaptive fashion you might ask? Adaptive clothing is apparel that has been designed for people who have difficulties dressing themselves due to age, disability or general lack of mobility. And how technology is being used for fabrics to help us adapt to our new broiling environment. Listen in with Billie & I, Emma Lucy Brown Founder of Denim Star® on this hot topic. Enjoy!

  • Happy Summer to our beautiful Denim Star, Sock Stars! We hope y’all are enjoying your summer vacays this year. Even more so after we all took that crash “summer school” course at Denim Star U, learning about getting a handle on living more sustainably and what we can all do to help save the planet together. Now that we all passed our Back to School crash course with flying colours, we can say for certain that School’s Out For Summer folks! As we take a deep dive into looking at some of the good news stories out there, that will all help us, not to contribute to “Clothes Mountain” that we talked about in the last episode, that was picked up by satellite, due to its humongous size!! Join in with Emma and Billie for this hot topic!!!

  • Happy Summer folks! We hope all our beautiful Denim Star, Sock Stars are diving right in this summer as for many of us now, it really does feel like things are back to normal (whatever that is for the time being anyway) now that WHO officially declared Covid a non-emergency and are seeing concerts, festivals, and travellers make a full comeback for the most part. Whatever theme or plans your Summer will bring you this year: that Summer Book list you want to bite right into, the trending “Do Nothing Vacation” that will allow you to recharge and unplug; or simply trying to get your hands on a pair of Adidas “Sambas” this summer to complete your quiet lux look. We want to hear and see your Summer plans this season. Drop us a line on Instagram!  As for Denim Star, it’s a back to school Summer.  Remember your fellow students and pals who had to head back to the drawing board at Summer School?  Well Denim Star is doing just that, as we recap what Denim Star had to showcase sustainably at Pure London, along with our new packaging, not to mention, having a boo at the Fashion Industry’s environmental report card to see where the industry stands and what more we can all do this summer to up our marks and ace the test.  No green-washing allowed at Summer School and beyond!!

  • Let’s Shine On! Even more so, after I was shocked to learn after following, Holly Tucker, of, Holly’s Desk Notes. Where, after having a dream, she noted that we experience emotions all the time, and that feelings are raw creativity, but that, isn’t it funny, how we don’t recognize that we live in art constantly? Holly went on to say that one of the most crucial things we can do for humankind is to keep championing creativity, art and imagination, that will inherently make us, not only human, but also part of planet Earth. And when it comes to the next generation. We have to instill the importance of what makes us, us! This ability to dream and make whatever we visualize come true. Which stems from having the confidence to think differently. And isn’t that one of the most powerful things we can possess? Listen in to Emma & Billie discuss this hot topic.

  • Happy Spring to all our beautiful Denim Star®, Sock Stars out there! Morning once again from Socks and Sandals and Other Scandals Morning Cuppa with Emma & Billy. And for all our loyal British followers, who could forget that we have King Charles III Coronation on May 6th (hasn’t been one since 1953). Followed by a spot of cleaning at the end of the month with, The Great British Spring Clean on May 28th.. So let’s dive right in with this month’s topic on “Quiet Luxury” shall we?

  • Happy Spring to all our beautiful Denim Star, Sock Stars out there! Hope everyone had a great Valentines and St. Patrick’s Day! Let us know on Instagram, how you celebrated this year wearing your favourite Denim Star, Sock Star looks. For February and Valentine’s you’ll find out from yours truly, Ms. Emma Lucy Brown, how everything went at the Pure London fashion show and all the exciting news with Denim Star® that’s going on. We had lot’s of great feedback regarding our new “sockette” format that we’re giving a go this year just to switch things up and see how she goes. Keeping it short with the “sockettes” seems to be the lay of the land for most folks these days when we’re all tapped for time. So let us know what you think we’d love to hear from you for sure!! Otherwise, let’s jump right in and Spring into Spring with your hosts Emma & Billie.

  • Happy 2023 to all our beautiful Denim Star®, Sock Stars out there! Hope everyone had a great Christmas holiday. Let us know on Instagram, how the “F-word” (fine) Walkers’ experiment went, over the holiday season, when folks asked how you were doing, leading into the celebrations. Fab, if it was really relaxing & recharging, and also fab, if you authentically, called it for whatever it was at that moment too. So let’s keep it real out there folks! And so then, for this new year at Denim Star’s Socks and Sandals and Other Scandals, Morning Cuppa with Emma + Billie, we thought that we would try out a new format, while still presenting, lots of cool content, but with shorter snippets or “sockettes” if you will. Kinduv like switching it up from Denim Star’s thigh high socks to the ankle sock itself if you will lol. Keeping it short. But with the same great product, just a different style, to mix things up a bit, and to keep it fresh and mesmerizing for the New Year and all our beautiful sock stars out there!

  • Morning all you lovely lot out there! Happy December, Happy Christmas! Which is literally sneaking up on us as we speak, isn’t it folks? As this year just seemed to flash by didn’t it? Billie and I, try hard as we might, to wrap up our deep dive discussion on sustainability and thrifting, have, yet, again, discovered that it just seems to take on a life of its own and morph into yet another episode! It’s kinduv like those beautiful Ukrainian “matryoshka” dolls. Also known as stacking dolls, nesting dolls, babushka dolls. You know the ones. You lift one up, only to find another one there, underneath. And so on, and so forth. They are just waiting patiently to emerge, for the whole world to see them in all their majesty. We appreciate these beautiful dolls, even more than ever, now, as we stand in solidarity with our brave Ukrainian brothers and sisters. So Billie, let’s, un-stack, yet another Matryoshka doll here, in the form of yet another sustainability and thrifting episode. Let’s see it for what it is, and whether or not this, thrifting Golden Age has truly ceased to exist in the world of thrift. And where we had left off in our last episode. But more importantly, let’s see what we can try to do in the world of thrift, in the name of sustainability, throughout the Christmas season, and where that might lead us in our journey shall we? Enjoy listening.

  • Morning all you lovely lot out there! Welcome one and all, to our beautiful Denim Star, Sock Stars, to Season 2, Episode 6: Thrift Store Shopping and taking a deep dive, further, into, what is really going on in the Thrift Store world at the moment. Where we have come from, and where we might be going on our thrift store journey ahead! Especially so, as, after having the amazing, Australian TV Presenter Faye De Lanty, on the show, she really helped us, open up the dynamic world and discussion, on how ‘Thrift Shopping” has found itself at a crossroads, as there are just so many variables to consider, now, that have made our Thrift Store shopping, ever more changing, as we consider our part that we can play, in not only discovering sartorial treasures, but, also helping to make the planet a better place to live!

  • Morning all you lovely lot out there! Welcome one and all, to our beautiful Denim Star, Sock Stars, to Thrift Store Shopping and Saving the Planet with our special guest, Faye DeLanty! What an amazing Episode this will be with our special guest who has so graciously agreed to be on the show as well as help us all, sift through the choppy waters these days, as we learn how to navigate thrift store shopping in order to have our wardrobe look ā€œhaute coutureā€, while at the same time, single handedly, saving the planet! Hahaha. I mean lets face it folks, these waters seem to be gradually getting more and more confusing, as many of us look to what sustainable options we have when it comes to making environmentally healthier choices about the clothes that we wear. I mean we have: thrift stores, op shops, we have our flea markets, bazaars, rummage sales, swap meets, we have consignment stores, second-hand stores and of course vintage stores, as well as the choice to go bricks and mortar, as well as doing all oneā€™s thrift store and vintage shopping online in the convenience and comfort of our own homes. Folks we need a ā€œHow to Shop thrift storeā€ GPS system in the form of, Australian TV Presenter Faye DeLanty, in order to help us maneuver our way through this traffic, keep us in our lane, and get us to where we need to go; and that is, having fun shopping at our local neighbourhood thrift stores, to find those amazing sartorial treasures, while travelling the thrift store shopping, highways and byways, listen in to Billie & I interview lovely Faye DeLanty to find out more!

  • Morning all you lovely lot out there! Welcome all, our beautiful Denim Star, Sock Stars, to Fashion Revolution Week and Earth Day! April proved to be an amazing month, with not only Earth Day on April 22, but also the entire week, from the 18th to the 24th with none other than, Fashion Revolution Week! As you may or may not know, Fashion Revolution Week happens every year, and marks the date of, April 24th which is the anniversary of, the Rana Plaza collapse disaster in Bangladesh, back in 2013. We talked about this last year when we mentioned the Garment Worker Diaries, while remembering Rana Plaza - a building in Bangladesh, which housed a number of garment factories, employing around 5,000 people. The people in this building were manufacturing clothing for many of the biggest global fashion brands. More than 1,100 people – mostly young women – died in the collapse and another 2,500 were injured. Making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. Every year during Fashion Revolution Week we are reminded that no one should have to die for fashion! Listen in with Billie & Emma on this hot topic.

  • It’s Emma Lucy Brown, your Hosiery High Priestess here at Denim Star’s Podcast, “Socks and Sandals and Other Scandals: Morning Cuppa with Emma + Billie”. We want to celebrate International Women’s Day some more! We’ve come a long way baby since the feminist movement was gaining ground in strength and popularity back in the 1960s when the Phillip Morris Company capitalized on shifting attitudes. The ad campaign was for their new brand of ultra-smooth, Virginia Slims cigarettes, where they specifically targeted women, which was itself, said to be a new phenomenon at the time. Every ad put a woman front and centre, equating smoking Virginia Slims with being independent, stylish, confident and liberated: with the slogan “You’ve come a long way baby” speaking directly about the progress women all over, were fighting for at that time. Women indeed have come a long way since the ad first appeared in the 1960s. To this day “you’ve come a long way baby” remains one of the most famous advertising campaign lines in the United States. Now some 50+ odd years later, since the campaign took off, we still celebrate our progress with International Women’s Day every year as well as Women’s History Month every March in the US. We may not be lighting up as much now, thankfully, with our Virginia Slims in a phenomenal way, but, nevertheless, we’re still phenomenal in how far we’ve come, and who we are as women, nowadays, with no-one giving more credence to that motto, than African-American poet, educator, memoirist and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou, in her aptly named poem “Phenomenal Woman.” Here’s to us on this year’s, International Women’s Day, while we celebrate all our achievements, as we remember just how far we’ve come, and how much farther we have to go, on our progressive journey as women: Phenomenal Women! Come and listen in to Billie & I discuss March's hot topic.

  • So come on people. Share the love it’s not too late! We want to be inspired by all our most Va Va Va Voooomish moments that happened this February and onward, all in the name of love and for the cause of celebrating our love for denim and our romance with it throughout the world! Come and listen in with Emma & Billie!

  • As a side note, I had mentioned to Billie that one of the themes I noticed over the holidays in London, was that we are seeing a little more “inclusivity”, if that’s the right word for it, in our fashion models, as they appear a whole lot more, like what is mirroring back to the fashion world, as far as seeing all shapes and sizes, heights and colours, in both fashion campaigns and ads. Rather than, this unrealistic expectation of “perfection” that the adverting agencies and industry has held us to, as far as us all trying to meet those standards and goals, in order to come across as the most exquisite, specimen on the planet hahaha, when it comes to what gets sold to us, within the realm of striving for perfectionism vs the essence of our authentic selves. Inclusivity is on the menu folks! Join Billie & Emma discussing this hot topic!

  • We stand together, for causes, or no causes! And we literally have the heart and “soles” to take on this mission to rock out our socks and be the stars we know we are. Especially now as we head into the Christmas season this year, where we will venture together, while it’s trending, into DIY fashion. DIY as it has popped and dropped, big time during our Covid journeys and beyond. And for all those crafters out there, as well as those, crafter-curious folks weighing up your options, for finding new hobbies during the winter months, depending on where you are this time of year of course! So listen in on Emma & Billie discussing this hot new topic of DIY Fashion. Welcome!
