Armed with the rights to Kong and with Godzilla's rights on lease, Legendary and WB were foaming at the mouth to bring the two characters back together on screen. In order to bring Kong into the universe, they gave him this standalone film, which throws audiences back into the Vietnam War era with Apocalypse Now references aplenty.
