Welcome to another insightful episode of the StreetSmart Wisdom Podcast, where we delve into the depths of the human psyche and explore the potent intertwining of creativity and self-discovery. Today's episode, "Harnessing the Shadow for Creativity and Growth," welcomes two remarkable voices to the conversation.
Our host, Steve Stein, founder of Better Listen and WisdomFeed Plus, joins forces with the esteemed Dr. Ido Cohen, a Bay Area clinical psychologist noted for his expertise in early childhood trauma, depression, and psychospiritual development. Together, they embark on a deep-dive into the rich terrain of Carl Jung's philosophies, shadow work, and the transformative power of imagination. They'll discuss how facing our darker aspects can lead to profound personal changes, as exemplified by narratives of individuals—ranging from musicians to Celtic poets—whose creative pursuits and encounters with their golden shadow have led them to authenticity and unexpected life paths.
The dialogue extends to imagination's pivotal role in both healing and hindering, our tendencies to stagnate in familiar patterns, and the dynamic interplay between analytical reflection and artistic expression. They advise embracing curiosity and self-reflection, possibly through journaling or painting, to engage with our shadows.
Furthermore, Mikey Brackett's contribution raises intriguing notions of the unconscious and shadow's influence, while our speakers touch upon archetypal images found in stories like Harry Potter and Peter Pan, and probe the depth of psychological impacts stemming from collective and personal trauma.
In true StreetSmart spirit, you're invited to contemplate the "trembling child" within and understand the crucial balance between disappointment and creativity necessary for growth. By episode’s end, Dr. Cohen extends an invitation for further connection, and both speakers encourage embracing the wisdom of dreams in the context of world conflict.
We invite you to join this revelatory journey into understanding and integrating the shadow for a richer, more authentic life. And, as always, we're excited to offer you the chance to become a part of the WisdomFeed Plus community, where like-minded individuals come together on a quest for deeper knowledge and fulfillment. On this episode of StreetSmart Wisdom Podcast, guest Susan Piver discusses the Enneagram and its nine different ways of being. She explains how understanding someone's type can lead to compassion and meeting them where their attention is. The conversation also explores the Enneagram's subtypes and how they impact how individuals perceive situations. The podcast emphasizes the Enneagram as a tool for communication and compassion, rather than labeling individuals. The second half of the episode will focus on the Wisdom Feed's topic of the month and the guest's new book about the Buddhist Enneagram.
Susan Piver is a Buddhist practitioner who has been studying the enneagram for almost 30 years. She believes that the enneagram, which describes nine ways of being in the world, can be used as a school of spiritual wisdom to deepen compassion towards ourselves and others. Susan emphasizes the concept of upaya, skillful means, in Buddhism and believes that the enneagram is one of the most potent upayas to practice compassion. In her view, the enneagram goes beyond being just a personality typing system and can be used to understand and get along with others in profound and direct ways.
