What is the real economic impact of a utility-scale solar farm on rural America?
Thatâs one of the questions I had in mind when I visited one of the largest solar projects recently inaugurated right in my own home state of North Carolina. As one of the largest renewable energy companies in the world, EDP Renewables has expanded its footprint into North Carolina with the 74-megawatt Misenheimer Solar Park, a project big enough to power 12,000 homes while generating more than $30 million in long-term benefits to the local community. Built on rolling terrain the site required innovative problem-solving and strong local partnerships, and years of consensus building before the first pile was driven into the ground. Navigating remote collaboration, regulatory hurdles, and evolving construction challenges, EDP successfully brought its first solar facility in the state online, and I got a first-hand look at what utility-scale solar could mean for rural America.
In this episode, I ask three individuals involved in the project to help break down the tactics behind making a utility-scale solar project successful:
Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America, shares how EDP builds lasting community relationships and approaches market expansion.Emily Morilla, Priority Project Manager, explains how the team managed project acquisition, permitting, and construction readiness.Sabrina Fleischman, Development Project Manager, details the strategies for securing land agreements, maintaining regulatory compliance, and keeping the project on track. We have a lot of work to do if weâre going to realize our renewable energy future on a timescale that helps mitigate climate emergencies; yet with scores of projects like this one coming online, why do we still so seldom hear about it? This conversation offers actionable insights for developers, project managers, and anyone looking to understand the complexities of bringing large-scale solar to new markets, but also provides an interesting discussion point about how we are telling our clean energy story. Hear how the EDP team tackled challenges, refined their approach, and executed a project that will deliver clean energy for years to come, then letâs discover new ways to tell that story to the millions of Americans who still believe this is somehow not an economically viable path to our energy security.

What if it were actually possible to power your EV from the sun collected on itâs surface? Or what if you were not constrained by only one battery chemistry type but could mix chemistries? Want to charge 400 volts with a 3V unit? For 150 years, electrical engineers have relied on magnetic induction for power conversion, using coils and magnetic structures to transfer energy. These constraints result in energy waste, size restrictions, and chemistry challenges, preventing seamless transfer between low and high voltages.
But what if you could control, manipulate, and augment the near-field reactive space by shaping it to do whatever you need? If you wrapped that kind of power up in a single element, it could deliver a potent âomni-converterâ that could do things literally impossible by other technologies.
Udi Daon, CEO of Daanaa Resolution Inc., is on a mission to eliminate power conversion inefficiencies, and redefining whatâs possible in energy efficiency. This serial entrepreneur quickly identified Daanaaâs groundbreaking technology to revolutionize power conversion as soon as he saw it, which is why he was the fist investor and soon took the reins as CEO. Under his leadership, the company has developed a device that breaks free from magnetic reliance, instead using the entire electromagnetic spectrum, manipulating near-field reactive electromagnetic space to achieve ultra-efficient conversion. This technology can transform very low voltage into high voltage (and vice versa) in a single step with over 95% efficiency, opening up new possibilities for electric vehicles, solar panels, and data centersâŠand all in a package the size of your carâs key fob!
Tune-in as I tease out:
How Daanaaâs technology enables efficient power transfer without relying on traditional magnetic induction methods. The practical benefits of converting ultra-low voltage from solar cells into usable energy for EVs.How Daanaaâs âomnipotencyâ boosts energy output from uneven surfaces with single-stage hyperconversion and bidirectional power.Udi Daonâs unique approach to scaling deep-tech solutions and aligning teams for success. When I first met Udi (at Intersolar N. America a little over a year ago!) I was as skeptical as the next person when he told me what his pocket-sized device could achieve. And Udi says that this disbelief has been the hallmark (and primary hurdle) preventing their technology from scaling. But I, for one, think theyâre on the cusp of something truly remarkable. And you get to say âI heard it first, on SunCast!â ;-)
Oh yeah, heâs also got a Lot to share about startup culture, lessons learned, etc from dozens of companies heâs founded or funded.
You will definitely get your moneyâs worth with this one!

It is estimated that by 2027 nearly half of all new solar installations will have energy storage attached, and todayâs guest, Adam Knudsen of Dynapower, asserts that almost half of those will have DC coupled storage. The choice between AC or DC coupled systems has become a critical consideration for developers, utilities, and energy planners. While AC coupled systems have long dominated the market due to their established infrastructure and reliability, DC coupled technology is quickly gaining momentum. DC coupling reduces energy losses, simplifies system design, and requires less electrical infrastructure, so why has AC-coupled been so prevalent?
Adam Knudsen, CEO of Dynapower, breaks down how DC coupling is transforming modern energy storage systems. For over 60 years, Dynapower has led advancements in power electronics that address scalability and reliability issues. These innovations have enabled new applications, such as fast-charging for electric vehicles, supporting localized grids through microgrids, and integrating hydrogen production into renewable energy systems. Nico and Adam discuss when and why to use DC versus AC-coupled in clean energy applications.
Expect to learn:
Key differences between AC- and DC-coupled systemsWhy DC coupling minimizes energy losses and simplifies system designWhy DC coupling is now scalable and viable for widespread adoption. Why AC coupling has heretofore been the market leading approach. What has changed to allow DC coupling to become more scalableTune in and learn how to decide which application might be right for your system.

Join us for an in-depth discussion with three different perspectives on the future of energy. We'll explore the potential impacts of Trump's policies on renewable energy, fossil fuels, and the environment. With the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) driving historic clean energy investments, we're at a critical juncture as Trump begins his second term. Tune in as we navigate the complex landscape of the energy industry's future.
The solar industry has proven its resilience time and again. During Trumpâs first term, solar capacity in the U.S. surged by 128%, exceeding 100 GW despite a federal focus on fossil fuels, according to SEIA. That same spirit of adaptation is palpable today, as the clean energy sector braces for a second term marked by deregulation, energy âtrade-offs,â and a growing corporate appetite for renewables.
David Roberts, respected journalist and progenitor of Volts.wtf, explores the unpredictability of the Trumpâs energy policies and how coalitions have become a vital counterbalance to federal uncertainty.
Travis Kavulla, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at NRG Energy, provides a detailed look at regulatory developments, including the potential impact of Chris Wrightâs leadership at DOE and how the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) evolving role could shape market dynamics.
Aaron Nichols, Marketing and Advocacy Specialist at Exact Solar, scoured dozens of articles on the subject and reflects on how Trumpâs initial term unexpectedly mobilized the solar industry, sparking collaboration that continues to fuel growth.
Despite the challenges, there are significant opportunities. Corporate renewable investments, driven by the AI boom and energy-hungry data centers, are reshaping market demand. Industry coalitions are demonstrating the power of collective advocacy in influencing policy and preserving growth. Federal agencies like FERC and DOE are at the forefront of decisions that could redefine the balance between fossil fuels and clean energy. The solar sector is once again proving its resilience, channeling innovation and determination to meet the moment.
With Inauguration Day just around the corner, the direction of U.S. energy policy hangs in the balance. Will deregulation spur clean energy growth, or will shifting priorities pose new challenges? Tune in to find out more.

Increasingly, it seems that corporate philanthropy (and even personal giving) are reactive rather than proactive. Todayâs episode challenges that notion with an insightful look into the relationship REC Solarâs Cary Hayes has formed with Alex Honnold and his Honnold Foundation, which REC has supported for years with both cash and in-kind donations. Why does Cary believe this is a meaningful part of their annual marketing budget? Hear Cary, Alex & Nico discuss why this is an overlooked marketing line item for most companies, and consider for yourself if supporting non-profits should be more prevalent in yours or anyoneâs annual budget.
Alex Honnold is best known for his daring free solo climbs, but his true passion lies in bringing clean energy to the world's most underserved communities. In a compelling conversation with Cary Hayes, President-America's at REC, Honnold shares the origin and evolution of the Honnold Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to solar power. By focusing on grassroots, "shovel-ready" projects, the foundation empowers local organizations to lead transformative initiatives, from cooperative microgrids in Puerto Rico to solar installations in remote African villages. Honnoldâs journeyâfrom dirtbag climber living in a van to International superstar spearheading a $50 million project pipelineâunderscores the importance of starting small and prioritizing tangible impact over perfection.
Following the Hayes/Honnold conversation, host Nico Johnson expands on this vision in a 1:1 with Cary reflecting on the solar industryâs unique opportunity to amplify its influence through philanthropy. Cary shares insights from REC Solarâs collaboration with the Honnold Foundation and explores how partnerships like these align corporate innovation with community resilience. Nico challenges the solar sector to move beyond profit-driven mindsets, arguing for a mission-first approach that redirects resources toward high-impact projects. Together, they discuss the power of storytelling, collaboration, and leadership to inspire a more sustainable and equitable future.
Itâs time to put our shoulders to the plow, align our resources with our mission, and drive meaningful, community-focused change. We all have a role to play in creating a more sustainable and equitable future.

Alex Honnold, the world-famous rock climber and philanthropist, has pushed the physical boundaries of human potential with his climbing pursuits, but in his travels to some of the worldâs most remote and beautiful locations heâs come face-to-face with one of the worldâs most urgent challenges: energy access.
Alex has never been one to stand by and let others do the hard work. Before his rise to fame with his harrowing, albeit Oscar-winning performance on Yosemiteâs most famous of all big walls, El Capitan, Honnold has had a soft spot for those without energy access. He points out that at its most fundamental level energy brings opportunity. Thatâs why he created his eponymous foundation to help expand solar energy access and empower underserved communities while promoting conservation in some of the most remote and vulnerable regions on the planet. And heâs been donating a third of his income to every year to help underserved communities acquire solar energy since long before achieving international recognition for his climbing feats.
If youâve been paying attention over the last few years, though, Honnoldâs âobjectivesâ (climber speak for projects) have blended the thrill of climbing with the responsibility of creating a lasting impact by helping preserve the environment in more ways than just environmental protection.
Thanks to Cary Hayes & the REC Solar team, who have been an ongoing corporate partner for Honnold Foundation, Nico recently had a chance to spend the day with Honnold at his home gym outside Las Vegas, NV. (yes, you read that right - we actually got to go to his HOME climbing gym, in his garage, and climb with him! More on that in a forthcoming LI PostâŠ)
In this wide-ranging conversation, Alex offers a rare perspective on how personal ambition can align with global progress, and why he believes solar power is a great social justice tool. From free soloing ascents of big walls to addressing energy inequity, Honnold is truly reaching new heights.
Tune in to discover:
How he balances family life, climbing, and building the Honnold FoundationHow Big Horn sheep helped shape his outlook on lifeWhy solar energy provides more leverage to address social inequalityHow lessons from climbing translate to building lasting impact and entrepreneurshipAnd much, much more (really, we learned a lot from this #SolarWarrior!)If you want to connect with today's guest, youâll find links to his contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://mysuncast.com/suncast-episodes/.

When Hurricane Helene devastated Asheville and western North Carolina, it left communities with widespread power outages, overwhelmed hospitals, and destroyed critical infrastructure. Months later, many are still navigating the long road to recovery after one of the most severe natural disasters to hit the region. For Nico Johnson, who calls North Carolina home, the storm was an urgent reminder of the escalating intensity and unpredictability of extreme weather.
In the immediate aftermath, organizations like the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association (NCSEA) and Footprint Project took decisive actionâmobilizing solar microgrids, portable solar generators, and atmospheric water generators to provide relief to those hardest hit.
Matt Abele, Executive Director of NCSEA, and Will Heegaard, Operations Director of Footprint Project, detail their coordinated response. Matt shares how NCSEA rallied local support and resources, while Will recounts deploying renewable technologies ahead of the stormâs landfall to ensure they were ready when disaster struck. Proactive measuresâsuch as staging solar equipment and partnering with local solar companies can save lives, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and pave the way for more sustainable recovery efforts.
Hear how clean energy transformed disaster relief in North Carolina and learn how you can support efforts to build resilient communities prepared for future crises.
Our continued thoughts and prayers to those still recovering from this storm.

While global climate movements highlight the urgency of the crisis, many are left wondering how to take meaningful, personal action.
Climatize is changing that.
With as little as $10, you can get started today investing in clean energy and get up to a 10% return on an investment that benefits more than your retirement account! (and weâve got a special code to get you even more benefit - see below)
Renewable energy projects often face significant funding barriersâparticularly at the community level, where traditional financial systems fall short. And as an individual, youâre usually required to be an accredited investor to even be considered as an investor in the funds that do help get these assets built.
As an SEC-registered impact investing platform, Climatize allows anyone over 18 to invest directly into renewable energy projects. And with millions of dollars already invested with dozens of solar developers on the platform, Climatize is bridging the gap in clean energy financing in a unique and valuable way.
Will Wiseman, co-founder and CEO of Climatize, made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for social impact and is regularly cited in mainstream journals for his advocacy and innovation in the sector. With over a decade of experience in solar installation, project management, and financial structuring, Will has also directly contributed to building more than a dozen solar farms. His technical and financial expertise fuels the Climatize mission to make clean energy investments accessible, fill critical funding gaps, and turn everyday individuals into active participants in the energy transition.
Beyond the accolades, I was genuinely impressed with how this young entrepreneur and his co-founder are building their business, quickly, and globally. Youâll be rewarded by sticking through to the end to hear some of his recommendations for building culture that is growth-focused while staying fun and rewarding. Itâs inspiring to see how the next generation of clean energy leaders are stepping up to solve real-world problems with a tech and media-savvy approach.
Expect to learn:
How Climatize is democratizing retail renewable energy investingGreta Thunbergâs surprising role in validating Climatizeâs early developmentHow Climatize bridges the "missing middle" for C&I and community solar fundingThe innovative strategies Climatize uses to build trust and engage first-time investorsHow crowdfunding regulations and FinTech advancements drive Climatizeâs successListen now to learn how you can turn small investments into meaningful climate action. Use code NICO25 for $25 toward your first Climatize investment!

Each year, we give you an opportunity to join us in supporting a non-profit on Giving Tuesday.
This Giving Tuesday, we are shining a light on not one but three nonprofits using solar to address critical challenges, from disaster recovery to education and global energy access.
These organizations are making an extraordinary difference by leveraging renewable energy to drive change where itâs needed most. If you attended Solar Fight Night this year at RE+, youâve already helped contribute toward these orgs, but you may not even realize it!
Today, we will introduce you to all three organizataions, give you more detail on their respective missions, and invite you to BOOST the giving by helping us top-off the donation they'll receive from Solar Fight Night!
We can make a difference.
Here are 3 outstanding nonprofits that we believe deserve your time AND your treasure.
Youâll hear from:
Solar Fight Night curator, Daniel Dus, has been the driving force behind what we often call âthe Met Gala of the solar industryâ. Daniel joins the conversation to help set the stage for what we do and why we chose these 3 specific entities. This unique gathering unites solar industry leaders in an evening of entertainment, but itâs much more than a huge party - the profits raised go directly to these nonprofits. In fact, weâve generated over $2 million USD to support projects ranging from disaster recovery to education and tribal community empowerment.
Letâs Share the Sun, led by Co-founder and President Bill Jordan, focuses on bringing solar power to underserved communities in under-developed nations like Haiti, Honduras, and Puerto Rico. By providing systems that deliver stability during disasters, such as powering critical medical equipment during hurricanes, the organization is transforming lives and scaling its efforts to reach 200 homes next year.
