Alex Rothwell, Chief Executive of the NHS Counter Fraud Authority, discusses the issue of fraud in the NHS in England. Alex highlights the importance of addressing fraud in the NHS, as any money lost to fraud could have been spent on healthcare outcomes. The conversation explores the importance of fraud prevention and control measures in the healthcare sector, and emphasises the need for a cultural change that prioritises reducing loss to budgets and managing risk. The conversation concludes by discussing the motivations behind fraud and the role of good governance in preventing it. Takeaways The NHS Counter Fraud Authority is responsible for tackling fraud, bribery, and corruption in the NHS in England. Fraud in the NHS is a significant issue, with an estimated £1.2 billion lost to fraud each year. There are different types of fraud in the NHS, including internal staff fraud, corruption, and fraud committed by external individuals or organisations. Preventing fraud is a priority, and organisations should have control measures in place to mitigate risk. Proactive measures, such as checking declarations of interest and identifying red flags, are essential in preventing fraud. Good governance plays a vital role in preventing fraud and creating a culture of transparency and accountability.

"Run your own race." Dr Dan Bunstone joins Tara this week, discussing his career journey and his current role at Etcetera Health. Dan explains the concept of lifestyle medicine and the importance of empowering individuals to manage their health, where they have onboarded and treated hard-to-reach patients, resulting in controlled blood pressure and potential savings of heart attacks and strokes. Tara finishes the episode by asking Dan to provide advice for primary care networks, healthcare professionals, network managers, and tech companies.. Dan & Tara's key takeaways: Lifestyle medicine, focusing on exercise, good diets, and sleep patterns, can have a powerful impact on health and is often more effective than medication. Running your own race and not comparing yourself to others is key. Finding time for exercise is crucial, even for busy healthcare professionals. Collaboration and proving cost savings are essential for primary care networks. Engaging with primary care as a tech company requires choosing the right partners and demonstrating clear benefits. Building on from episodes 312 & 314, Tara returns to discuss the importance of considering outside help from consultants for healthcare leaders facing challenges. Tara provides a list of important questions for leaders to reflect on and determine if they would benefit from external support.. Tara's key takeaways: Consider hiring a consultant if you consistently miss targets, have the same recurring issues, lack clarity on strategy, or face staffing and morale problems. Be ready and committed to investing time and resources to improve the situation before seeking outside help. Think about the potential impact of resolving the issue and consider if it can be resolved internally or if outside help is needed. When looking for a consultant, seek referrals from trusted sources and prioritise expertise and experience over cost. Consultants should deliver on the agreed scope of work and stay focused on the brief.

Is the perception of too many managers in the NHS is a myth?
Ben Falk, a director of operations at Guy's and St. Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust, shares his journey into healthcare and his role as a director. He discusses the day-to-day responsibilities of a director of operations and the challenges of workforce planning.
Ben also addresses the perception of too many managers in the NHS and emphasises the importance of collaboration and valuing all roles within the organisation.
Ben & Tara's key takeaways from this episode:
Workforce planning in the NHS involves attracting and recruiting the right talent, highlighting the benefits of working in the NHS, and showcasing the diverse range of roles available. Creating a culture of collaboration involves fostering communication, recognising and valuing all roles within the organisation, and breaking down barriers. Personal experiences and backgrounds can help leaders relate to and understand the challenges faced by different roles within the organisation. Managing stress is important in healthcare, and individuals can find different strategies that work for them. Building a network and seeking peer support can be valuable for career development.Work with THC Primary Care
