Tara-Leigh Cobble Changed Her Mind About God

It's Mind-Change Monday, and today's guest is the host of The Bible Recap Podcast. Tara-Leigh Cobble helps millions of people read, understand, and love the Word of God every day. But before she could do that, she had to change her mind. This is a perfect conversation for self-brain surgeons, because you can't change your life until you change your mind, and learning to love God's word is the first step to getting that done.

Check out The Bible Recap website!

Tara-Leigh is also a sought-after public speaker and teacher.

She also founded D-Group International, which exists to help people READ, UNDERSTAND, and LOVE the Bible, as they encounter God in a way that transforms their entire lives.

  • Flashback to the Beginning of Season 10!

Today, we respond to a listener who asked the important question of what to do and say when someone has just experienced trauma, tragedy, or some other massive thing (TMT).

    Scripture: Romans 12:15

Books Mentioned: This is Hard by Jon Swanson, Walking with God Through Pain and Suffering by Timothy Keller, Hope Is the First Dose by me

My Advice When Speaking to Others after TMT:
    1. Show up and shut up (I stole this from Jon Swanson)
    2. Tears over talking
    3. Empathy over equivalence
    4. Theology is like salt: it needs to be correctly applied in tiny amounts, and of high quality, or it can hurt more than it helps.

  • Erin Loechner had a million followers on social media.

She was at the top of her game as an influencer when she realized that something was very wrong. Join me for a compelling conversation with Erin about why she decided to walk away from that career, and from social media altogether, to start a new life with her husband and kids as an Opt-Out Family.

Her new book, The Opt-Out Family: How to Give Your Kids What Technology Can't is an incredibly important new idea for families, parents, and grandparents.

    From Amazon.com

Discover a new and hopeful path forward as you consider your family's approach to social media, screen time, and technology.
We've all heard the mind-boggling statistics about technology and social media use. The numbers don't lie; our obsession with smartphones and social media is slowly eroding the very essence of our homes and families. We see it. We feel it. We know it.

So what do we do about it?

Spoiler alert: Forget parental control apps, time limits, or reward charts. This revolutionary path takes us into the heart of the beast itself: the social media algorithm. Former social media influencer and trailblazer Erin Loechner has seen the perks and pitfalls of social media usage, and she knows how to hack the strategies of tech wizards and platform experts so you can borrow their billion-dollar playbook to engage your family in meaningful ways away from screens.

The Opt-Out Family is packed with eye-opening research and startling insights, as well as practical encouragement and creative ideas to transform your family's relationship with today's ever-evolving technology. As a result, you will:

Experience more quality time with your children that doesn't revolve around screensCreate healthy habits as a family that will set your children up for success in the futureDiscover what your kids actually need from you, and learn how to delight and engage them better than a device canAnd, ultimately, establish true and lasting influence within your own four walls--and far beyondThe Opt-Out Family unlocks a world where genuine connections flourish and technology takes a backseat. It's time to reclaim your home and build a tech-free family culture that's stronger than your Wi-Fi signal.

Erin Loechner is the founder of global tech-free movement The Opt-Out Family. She is a former social media influencer who walked away from a million fans to live a low-tech lifestyle—and is now teaching others how to do the same. Her cutting-edge work has been praised in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and the Huffington Post, as well as on the Today Show. When she’s not scrawling on her trusty steno pad, Erin, her husband, and their three kids spend their days chasing alpenglow, reading Kipling, and biking to town for more tortillas.

Check out Erin's website here to find a ton of helpful resources, statistics, and other information if you're considering making the opt-out decision for your family as well.

  • It's Frontal Lobe Friday!

Today, a conversation with Dr. Josh Axe. He shares his powerful story of healing from a devastating infection, and we talk about how you can learn to change your mind with his incredible new book, the New York Times bestseller, Think This, Not That: 12 Mindshifts to Breakthrough Limiting Beliefs and Become Who You Were Born to Be.

    About Dr. Axe:
Renowned physician, entrepreneur (founder of Ancient Nutrition) and best-selling author Dr. Josh Axe is revolutionizing how we look at collective health, both through his podcast and through his social channels ( 3.7 million combined followers; 2.2 million YouTube subscribers). He specializes in functional medicine, regenerative medicine and longevity. He also is a leadership expert, earning his Master's at Johns Hopkins University.

    From Amazon.Com:

    Instant New York Times Bestseller

Unlock your potential by cultivating self-awareness and curating a fulfilling life full of self-improvement, emotional intelligence, and a growth mindset. Leadership expert and entrepreneur Dr. Josh Axe teaches 12 revolutionary mindshift transformations to beat the grind and reach the life you've always wanted. Redefine success and replace the limiting beliefs of yourself with the healthy mental toughness to think this, not that.

Perhaps you're busy but still feel empty. Maybe things haven't turned out how you'd hoped, and life seems stale and unfulfilling. What if you could wake up every morning excited about your purpose, knowing you're fulfilling your greatest potential?

A more meaningful life is within your reach, and it starts in one place: your mind.

Living with a mindset of false narratives will keep you stuck, locked in a prison of unpursued dreams and goals. But cultivating a new mindset based on what is actually true will set you free—free to start exploring and growing beyond the limits you thought you had.

In Think This, Not That, Dr. Josh Axe unpacks the top twelve mental barriers holding people back from realizing their potential and becoming the greatest version of themselves, and contrasts each one with a new empowering mindset, such as:

Don't simply drift; clarify your purpose.Don't define success based on what you accomplish; base it on who you become.Don't be the victim; be the hero.Don't be a slave to your vices; overpower them by building virtues.Don't live by popular opinion; follow enduring principles of wisdom.Don't allow unintentionality; visualize a strategy.Whether you want to improve your physical or financial health, raise the quality of your relationships, or take your career to new heights, these mindshifts will help transform your life.

It's time to break through your limiting beliefs and find out who you can become, to build a meaningful life through new thoughts and actions, and to make the switch from what's stalled you toward a life of ultimate significance.3

Today, a look at the interplay between feelings and thoughts, a part of your brain called the corpus striatum, the importance of tonically active neurons, and a conversation with Jennie Allen!

"Don't Let Your Emotions Get the Best of You."

We've all heard it, but is it sound advice? Jennie Allen is on the podcast today to talk about her new book, Untangle Your Emotions: Naming What You Feel and Knowing What to Do About It.

Plus: the story of how Jennie Allen is directly responsible for Lisa and me moving from Alabama to Wyoming to Nebraska!

This is a powerful talk about what I believe will be one of the most important books of 2024.

    From Amazon.com:

The New York Times bestselling author of Get Out of Your Head provides a revolutionary path to embracing a healthy relationship with your emotions, one that leads to life-giving connection with God and others as well as to a richer understanding of yourself.

“This book is worth thousands of dollars of counseling.”—Jonathan Pokluda, bestselling author and host of the Becoming Something podcast

How often have you heard, “Don’t let your emotions get the best of you”? But what if instead of ignoring our feelings, we noticed them, named them, and let God use them to draw us closer to Himself and others?

Many of us need to unlearn damaging messages about our emotions. We’ve been taught, for example, that emotions are untrustworthy, when, in fact, God can use them to help us see where we need His healing.

In Untangle Your Emotions, Jennie Allen uses scientific research, biblical insight, and her own story to help you

    ● exchange stuffing, dismissing, or minimizing your emotions for a five-step process to know what you feel and what to do about it

    ● debunk the myth that feelings are sinful by learning how emotional maturity leads to deeper connection with God and others

    ● live emotionally healthy by applying biblical wisdom and therapeutic research that works whether you self-identify as “emotional” or not

    ● sit with feelings that are confusing and painful by discovering the depth of God’s love and compassion for you

  • How do maintain hope and faith when you're dealing with something that is never going to get better?

Our guest today is Andrea Herzer, an author and expert on chronic illness. She's been dealing with a severe pain syndrome and with cancer for over twenty years, and has had over 100 surgeries. Her book is Incurable Faith, and it's tremendously helpful if you're struggling with something hard.

Check out Andrea's website and Facebook group!

    From the publisher:

Discover the riches of abundant life that pain and illness can never take away in this encouraging devotional full of hard-won insights and powerful biblical inspiration.

In Incurable Faith, Andrea Herzer writes from the midst of her own long-term illness to give you hope wherever you are on your journey with medical issues. Whether you are facing a new diagnosis, mysterious pain, or any other illness, you can go from being a victim to being victorious through God’s sustaining love.

Far from suggesting you must “have faith and get over it,” Andrea validates your suffering while offering sustaining hope for your soul. Through devotions, Scriptures, spiritual exercises, and suggested worship music, Incurable Faith helps you:

    • unlock the key to joy through praise, presence, and purpose
    • understand the difference between acceptance and resignation
    • nurture grace-filled relationships throughout the stresses of illness
    • navigate the isolation of being bedridden or homebound
    • develop practical strategies for coping with pain, fatigue, and anxiety

The 120 devotionals are grouped in varying lengths, so you can engage with shorter passages on days when concentration is difficult. Each devotion offers a Scripture verse, prayer, suggested worship song, and takeaway to keep your mind anchored in truth.

A testament to how the joy of the Lord gives strength even when our bodies are weak, Incurable Faith invites you to know God’s sustaining power and comfort in a deeper way—because no illness can diminish His abundant provision for you.

Includes a topical Scripture index and multiple resources for caregivers.
