  • Dear Mama B,
I’m struggling with getting frustrated with my child! He won’t sit still, and I’ll know he knows things but suddenly magically forgets. He’s only 3, maybe I’m holding him and myself to a higher expectation than I should?

    - Expectation Frustration

    Dear Expectation Frustration,
Oh hon, I hear that! It’s the pressure that will kill ya. You want the best for your kiddo, I get it but if you give in to that pressure you will miss out on the most amazing experiences with your children.

Teaching, like feeding, your child is an expression of love. It is a gift.

A small child understands this from infancy. They depend on us to teach them to stay away from danger and to behave in a way that will help them develop good relationships. Dr Doman, the author of Teach Your Baby to Read, believes that testing or questioning a child after teaching them is like taking your gift back after you give to them. Just like you wouldn’t give them some candy and expect your small child to give it back to you.

In the end all we want is for our child to be happy now and in the future, we believe that a good education will make them happy. That isn’t exactly true. Good relationships will make them happy. And good relationships will get them the job and help them keep it.

So feed them as much information as you can teach them in every teachable moment. Teach them joyfully, while developing a good solid relationship with them.

They will share with you and give back to you what they have learned when they are ready to give to you. My Chey still amazes me when she repeats something I remember teaching her when she was small or excelling at something we worked on when she was young.
    Love,
    Mama B.

I remember a few years ago, when vertical gardening books were stuffing the shelves of your Home Depot and Lowe's everywhere. Now that may seem like a funny place to go book shopping. But you know me, I will find an opportunity to book shop wherever I can. And I quickly became obsessed with the concept of growing food vertically, you'd see these incredibly amazing pictures of these vertical gardens and these gorgeous wood slats that they would set them up and Heaven knows that all the projects in those books were pretty expensive. But I've since learned that growing food vertically doesn't have to be an expensive project... READ MORE AT: https://farmhousebookco.com/?p=246

    Dear Mama B,
My Biggest frustration with Homeschooling is that I just don’t have time to plan it all! Any tips?
    - Timed Out

    Dear Timed Out,
Oh this is one of my favorites. Planning is a corporate skill that every child should learn early. Let them see you plan. Plan with them. Start by just planning one day, But -Whatever you do- do not make a schedule. You know as well as I do, with children, this is not an easy task. We have to be flexible. So instead of putting “from 9-10 am we will read” just put “read” on a piece of paper like a todo list. I like to divide my bullet journal into five sections. Teaching is priority. Next comes healing, cooking, cleaning, and learning. I write my objectives for the day in each section and I put bullets next to each to check off when I’m done. Most of the time it’s the same thing over and over again but guaranteed if I don’t write it down I’ll forget it. Most everything I do during the day fits into one of those five categories. So when I think of something it is easy to just write it down as I go. Sometimes I find myself already doing something before I write it down. In this case I will write it down and check it off. I do this because I might need to remember that again another day. And because It makes me feel good to see what I’ve been doing all day. I also have my children plan each day in the same way. They divide their journals into chores, reading, writing, math, science. We put something in each. And then they practice checking it off as well. It’s writing, spelling, handwriting and planning all at once. I love things like that.

    Love, Mama B.
