In this episode of The Headless Marketing Show, we are talking about the importance of the Frontend.
Our guest Michael C Lamb talks about what he sees a lot of companies miss. They have company experiences and not customer experiences. He sees many firms deploy experiences with all these things put up in front of the user that doesn't bring value to the customer and that causes friction.
What is the Frontend?The frontend is anywhere your brand interacts directly with your customers. Social media channels, email, websites, landing pages etc.
Michael didn't mince words. Customers don't care about what database you are using, your CRM, or your CMS. None of that stuff matters to them. They care about finding good reliable and valuable information that they need to make good decisions. They care about the experience. Is it easy to work with a brand or is it endless popups and forms and poor content and low-quality experiences?
We talked at length about the attention data we should be watching and changing the way we manage our KPIs. Likes, Impressions, page views, and email submissions don't really drive revenue. We should be tracking how customers use the experience. We should be tracking how our frontend is connected to our pipeline and revenue. Using those kinds of KPIs puts a lot more focus on the customer.

Today on The Headless Marketing Show we are chatting with Jacob Byers about why he loves headless CMS.
Jacob was a marketer turned developer when addressing technical issues that companies face when being competitive online. After using several monolithic systems like WordPress, he found that shiny, all-encompassing solutions are not nimble enough to adapt to the ever-changing space that is the web. That was until discovering the Jamstack.
Now his business Ohmni is able to use modern technologies that are scalable in nature. Allowing businesses to run their website as part of a larger omnichannel. While giving a cleaner user experience that people expect from the web.
We tackle the basic ideas of what the Jamstack and Headles CMS are and how it helps developers and marketers be successful.

Personalization is a big topic. We all know what bad personalization looks like but users are
looking for good personalization and marketers want to deliver personalization on their landing
pages and other digital experiences in the same way they can now do this in social media.
Andy sees two things that marketers need to really get personalization dialed in for their users
and their brands. The first is technology. The second is Knowledge.
Marketers need the tools in their martech stack to be able to deliver personalized content and
experiences wherever their customers are but they also need the knowledge and know-how to
deploy personalization to maximum effect.
Throughout the episode, we talk about the issues of trying to do personalization on legacy tools
and old technologies and the benefits of using modern technologies like headless cms. But also
the importance of respecting the end-user and doing personalization in a way that makes the
user's experience better - as Andy said, and I am paraphrasing here - "we don’t want to be
creepy."

What is the Jamstack?
Here on The Headless Marketing Show we talk a lot about headless CMS and what marketing can benefit from using a headless CMS - these are techy topics and they require a different approach to how you build a website. Enter the Jamstack. On today's show, we'll listen to Brian Rinaldi discuss and explain what the Jamstack is.
Simply put the Jamstack is a new way of building and deploying websites and web experiences. It is all about decoupling the website away from monolithic systems and decentralizing the stack with "best in breed microservices" and then re-coupling and pre-building the entire front end.

Why is the Jamstack important?As we discuss on the show this is a pretty big change to how websites and web experiences are built. In many ways, it is a big update to the systems and procedures many web developers use to build websites and web experiences. For this reason, Jamstack has become immensely popular in development communities. It is easier for developers to build and maintain complex things on the Jamstack than on older server-based tools like WordPress or Drupal and it is much more modern in the way it relates to Javascript and APIs.
For marketers, this all matters because the Jamstack makes it much easier to break out of templates and older slower development cycles. It gives WAY more creative control back to the marketing team to be able to build experiences that customers are looking for. In the show, we discuss how older systems come with a lot of constraints and choke-points, and complications that go away when using the Jamstack.

Today I am excited to introduce Camille Trent, she is the Head of Content at Dooly.
Dooly is a sales enablement tool and they market themselves as the fastest way to update Salesforce, take sales notes, and easily manage deals. They aim to help salespeople save 5+ hours of gruntwork/week.
Dooly has adopted a headless CMS to manage their content on both their application and their marketing website. In this case, they have chosen Contentful.
Today we’ll talk to Camille about what her life is like as a content marketer using a headless CMS and get her opinions on the pros and cons of that kind of architecture. She also talks about the importance of using no-code tools to help her marketing team publish landing pages and non-SEO pages for their campaigns and whenever they need to quickly spin up a new experience.
The big question I had for Camille revolves around how the marketing world and developer worlds can become better connected. She had a number of great ideas on how marketing can adopt better tools and run more like an engineering team and or use no-code tools for their testing and experimentation.
Camille also talked a lot about empathy and developing a culture of enablement. Creating a workflow where the marketing team is able to work with tools and a process that allows them to be successful while also enabling the development team to use their tools and processes to be successful as well. Both departments ultimately want to see the company succeed and grow and both teams want to do their best work. Allowing that to happen requires finding synergy between marketing and development.

Today we have Brian Zolot on the show. Brain is the first marketing hire at a young growing company - Rox Box Containers - he is the Marketing and Media Director. I think a lot of companies have a single person marketing team or a no-person marketing team where they are perhaps managing the marketing side of the company as an owner or through sales. Speaking with Brian was really insightful on how to manage marketing when you have limited resources.
From standing up and managing a website, generating blog content for SEO or managing your social media profiles, marketing covers a wide scope and in general requires labor, oftentimes lots of labor. If you are a one-person marketing team that means you really have to stay focused on what is important. Brain talks about needing to get everything done versus only working on his favorite parts of marketing and being willing to finish something, like his website or videography projects at good enough instead of chasing perfection and potentially wasting time for little gain.
Like any marketing team he has his struggles with the balance of quality content versus the quantity of content produced and because he is a marketing team of one he has to deal with technical issues on his website and advertising software and video editing suite and on and on.
We talk a bit about having to learn on the fly and approach marketing with a trial and error mentality and Brian has some great commentary on how to learn, where to find information and help and how to structure and prioritize your marketing efforts when resources are scarce. I think a lot of people will find this episode relatable. Let’s bring brian in and start the show!

Today on the show we have Victor Coisne the VP of Marketing at Strapi CMS. Strapi is an open-source headless CMS that we’ve used a number of times here at WebriQ. Today Victor and I talk all about the rise of no-code/low-code tools for the marketing world
No-code is immensely popular right now. Tools like Webflow, Squarespace, Wix, and on and on. It seems every week there’s a new drag and drop editor available on the market. But for all the popularity many companies end up using better tools like a CMS or Content Management System because of the benefits they provide.
We sat down to discuss what no-code and low-code look like for marketers today and to measure their pros and cons and discuss why plenty of marketing teams opt for a CMS. Victor had some great insight on why a headless CMS may be a great middle-ground for marketing teams capable of using a low-code tool while also needing the benefits that headless cms can provide.
If you have been thinking about how to manage your digital experiences and considering a no-code tool versus WordPress or thinking about adding a grouping of plugins to WordPress to make it as no-code as possible Victor has some great commentary I am sure you’ll find valuable. No-Code vs Low-CodeA no-code platform is a programming platform that uses a visual development interface to enable non-technical users to build applications by dragging and dropping software applications to create a full app. Users don't need any previous coding experience to build applications using no-code.
It's key to differentiate between low-code and no-code platforms. Low-code platforms are most often used by individuals with some coding knowledge to achieve a lot more customization and really build what is mission-critical. No-code tools are more limited but easier to use whereas low-code are much more capable of delivering exactly what the business needs it just takes a bit more technical understanding to achieve.

Over the past decade, e-commerce has grown from ~4% of US retail spending to ~15%. This growth has only sped up after the advent of COVID-19, by all accounts the trendline of online sales commerce is steepening. In the not too distant future, the majority of consumer spending will take place online.
The technical world of e-commerce is shifting away from monolithic systems and traditional e-commerce platforms, and into a new era of decoupled e-commerce. This new method for creating and deploying e-commerce is called headless commerce.
I am really excited about this episode. We’ve had a few shows on headless content management but there is a whole other universe to headless when we talk about headless commerce. Fundamentally headless commerce is very similar to headless content management. By decoupling your commerce you can place your commerce anywhere and any way that you want. It is really about having complete control over your commerce experiences and helping give the best experiences to your customers.
In today’s show, I sat down and spoke with Andrew Underwood who is the co-founder of Commerce.JS a headless commerce startup. We talk through some of the big concepts of headless commerce and the e-commerce industry at large. If you’ve never heard of headless commerce this will be a great place to get a bunch of information. What is Headless CommerceCurrently, most of the e-commerce platform options available to businesses are monolithic (also considered traditional commerce). This means the entire system is held on a single platform. The product information catalog, design templates, database, shopping cart, and checkout process are all stuck together and a lot of your business choices have pre-ordained for you. This can be beneficial for a young webshop but, eventually, many online traditional commerce stores find themselves constrained everywhere they turn.
So what is headless commerce exactly?
Headless commerce decouples the presentation layer — in most cases, the template or theme — from the eCommerce platform. Another way to think of the headless approach is that all the components are modular. Meaning you gain a lot of choice and flexibility and access to the power that brings to develop better customer experiences.

Today we’ll be chatting with Ryan Hornack. He is the Director of Marketing at Fifth Wheel Freight. In our conversation, we talk a lot about how marketers can better communicate and manage marketing projects with other departments. Ryan has some great ideas around how to frame projects and then incorporate other team members so that the project runs smoothly while also making sure the desired outcome is achieved.
We also talk about how to develop marketing campaigns for non-traditional reasons - specifically around recruitment. Ryan sees this as a whole new frontier in the marketing world. Brands that understand how to develop and deploy these specific marketing campaigns will have a leg up on companies running more traditional recruitment strategies.

Today on the show we have Marcelo Lewin. Marcelo is a Headless CMS Solutions Professional and Founder of Headless Creator dot com. In his day job, he is a Senior Content Solutions Specialist at Service Titan.
I had a lot of fun interviewing Marcelo - he is clearly super passionate about headless content management - so much so that he has developed a full-time side gig as an educator of all things headless CMS. I was particularly pleased with his knowledge and insight around using headless cms across the organization. Not just for marketing content. In fact, I learned a whole new concept in talking to Marcelo as he talked about microcopy and how you can use headless cms to manage content within applications.
This is the big reason a lot of folks look at headless cms. You can manage all the content within the company. Applications, Landing Pages, Websites. Within the headless content management community, we call this single source of truth. You’ll hear Marcelo talk about that a few times and essentially that’s the concept he is referring to. Bringing all content together into a single content hub and having a single source of truth for your content - whether it is marketing content, customer service content, or microcopy in an app. Headless cms allow you to manage your content from one place and yet have that content be delivered to any channel you want.
We also talk a lot about content modeling and basically preparing yourself to use headless cms. Marcelo has a ton of great information on organizing and preparing your content so you can create a content model so be prepared for a nice juicing podcast on how to start thinking about your content from a different perspective.

Today on the show we Have Kaya Ismail. Wordify is a content marketing agency for SaaS and enterprise software vendors. Wordify is not just another content factory. You see Kaya’s firm Wordify is focused on help Headless CMS companies define their own content marketing and it is because of his close proximity to the world of headless cms that I was most keen on having him on the show. So we talk a lot about headless cms. I mean - it is the topic where we derive the name for this podcast - the headless marketing show!!.
Now if you’ve never heard of the term headless CMS or any of the ideas behind headless content management then you’re really going to find this show useful. Kaya does a great job of laying out the advantages and reasons why a lot of companies are looking at headless cms to help them publish and create engaging user experiences and help them manage their content.
There is some technical jargon in the episode. Things like Jamstack, APIs, DXPs also called digital experience platforms, and even the concept of decoupling the front end of a website from the back end of a website and thus using a headless CMS. Fear not, this show is in fact catered to non-technical people and mostly about how the marketing world should become familiar with the ideas and considerations of headless content management. What is an API?I thought we’d go over what an API is. Technically Speaking API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface, which is a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other. Each time you use an app like Facebook, send an instant message or check the weather on your phone, you're using an API.
In the coming interview, you’ll hear Kaya talk about APIs and he’ll mention API calls which better represent what APIs really are. They basically act as messengers retrieving and delivering data on applications and websites. You can think of an API like a waiter in a restaurant. They take your order, deliver your food and handle the collection of your payment - oftentimes we waive our hand or call our waiter to have these services happen. APIs do the same service online.
The rise of APIs has led to what is being called the API first movement which is a movement in DevOps to place APIs at the center of the architecture. This enables websites and applications to be more modular, reusable, and extensible, more akin to Lego blocks than the monolithic server based systems of yesteryear.

What is Jamstack?The Jamstack approach to web development has been emerging for several years, but really took off in 2017. More a design philosophy than an explicit framework, JAM Stack takes the concept of static, database-free websites to the next level via an architecture advocates are calling “the future of the internet.” Which only makes sense. Browsers themselves have essentially become mini operating systems capable of running complex client-side applications while interacting with myriad APIs. Meanwhile, with the help of Node.js and React, and other new coding languages, JavaScript has leaped the divide between front and back end for real-time, two-way communication between client and server. Jamstack is simply harnessing these factors in a logical and effective way.
