Introducing the one and only Patrick Gnerlich!
WARNING: This episode was previously recorded and discusses mental health fairly in depth so listening discretion is advised.
We get really deep into how men in America today need to be able to be self aware and assist themselves in getting mental health assistance where needed. Whether that lies in getting diagnosed, going to therapy, checking yourself in for drug use or suicide, it's always worth getting help wherever you may find it. Even if that assistance is found in friendships and relationships that are close by. We discuss how in those relationships in moments of weakness, that we need to be comfortable about talking about mental health from male to male in this society.
Discussing how people have so many hurdles in American health care systems and work places, with not only one's self, but also their children when it is needed. Understanding that having the access to resources for mental health should be more easily accessible in this country. Talking about mental health and keeping your head in a good space is something that is a life long journey, and not a cure or destination.
Have a reflective time listening to the personal instances that happen to both Patrick and Jonathan and how they deal with their day to day in their own mental health when it comes to family, coping mechanisms, depression, ADHD, work places, therapy sessions, cheating, and even suicide.
This episode will feels like a cold bath, a little shocking at first, but feels good to the body in the end.

This episode is heavier than a Led Zeppelin...
I may have wanted to start it out light, cause we get deep with Annette Alatorre about her personal experiences with suicide and mental health as well as the overall stigma surrounding the topic. From calling the police to help her sister whom she watched down an entire bottle of sleeping pills, to checking herself in to the hospital for her own well being as recent as 2020 during Covid. Her encounters with great people whom she's lost as friends to their own suicides and how she's coped with those as best as she can. The brain and mental health is a funny human organ and we feel it doesn't get the attention it deserves here at Homegrown Podcast, so we urge you to listen to this in depth discussion from two people who are pursuing getting into the mental health field based on their own personal, what some might say traumatic, experiences.
This episode will make your entire body feel heavy, but in a relatable, taking vitamins type of way.

This is our second time with good friend Adam Gharib on the podcast. This time we wanted to take a specific look into working too hard and burning out, setting up boundaries for yourself and the wellbeing of the people around you and general mental health. Whether it's bosses asking more out of you than they are willing to communicate, to not getting paid after doing the work you agreed to. Remembering as a free lance artist that last minute bookings don't necessarily mean it's a good opportunity as they usually don't have the time to properly prepare. So listen in to get some of the details Adam has suggested has given him a clearer head, more time, and better mental health. Enjoy the episode.
This episode will give you motivation while making things clearer in your head.

This Episode we introduce a great friend to the show in Anthony Jaramillo. We discuss his coming up in The San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, from being bullied for being a small kid, finding a love in playing hockey, to being blamed for his block's mischief as a child due to the color of his skin once they moved out to Lancaster, CA (still in LA County). This week we have the amazing Elizabeth Kahn joining us. A consultant by day and actor / producer / creator by night, Elizabeth has a full life between her Minnesota roots and her Los Angeles home. Like our host Jonathan, Elizabeth is a Korean adoptee who was brought up in Mahtomedi, outside of St Paul Minnesota. We have a great discussion today about:
Her upbringing in Minnesota and the multiple cultures she celebrated being in a diverse family and how that's given her an empathetic perspective on life.
The trip to meet her biological & foster family from Korea.
How Asian American representation in media effected her and leaned her into her decision to becoming an actor and representing the race herself.
Asian American history not being taught in public education and how that effects how the rest of America interacts with Asian Americans.
Her view as an Asian American and the Atlanta shootings.
Give it a listen and enjoy some of that HomeGrown. -
An amazingly insightful podcast and one of our best yet! This week we introduce our friend Christopher Wright to the podcast. A teacher and student simultaneously who teaches Elementary school level children and is going for his Master's Degree. Chris grew up in Los Angeles but was brought up in mostly predominantly white schools in his early childhood, so we discuss how that's molded him and his outlook on life.
There's some deep discussion about the concept of "School to Prison Pipelines" and how education in America is systematically divided by race and ethnicity and how it effects the Prison system in turn. The idea that if you're fighting for any human rights, that you should be fighting for all human rights, and the concept of "picking and choosing" is irresponsible and false cries for change.
Conversation about the recent Red Table Talk about Asian and African American unity and how that would be beneficial to America. The idea that pinning minorities against each other as being the "bread and butter" that White America has thrived on since it's founding fathers formed this country. Asking the question of why White people tend to defend and get angry when discussing that history and systematic oppression, or even start to cry, rather than have a conversation about American History and what we can do to change the system? Also as to how and why White American's think it's logical to tell people of color to "go back home" when getting in arguments? Indigenous people are the only ones that didn't immigrate....
There's some discussion about Blacksploitation and Kung Fu films and while they were great representation in the media for people of color who had no representation at the time, it also set them up for stereotypes that White Americans cling to and still don't understand. Also about the Colorism (Racism within your own race) that happens and how it's detrimental to equal rights everywhere.
Give it a listen as there's a lot of great conversation happening!! -
This week we invite our friend and colleague from Madison Media Institute (Rest in Power) in Ray Moore. We discuss his upbringing in the Philippines while being an American Citizen and a Military brat who moved around every couple years on average and how that affected his outlook on life and race. How he moved to America 3 years after his mother at nineteen years old right in before Katrina hit in 2005 and took away everything they had. As tradition in his family he shortly after entered the military where he met his wife and had to introduce her to the Filipino family for acceptance. We hit the conversation of the Atlanta shootings and how he discussed that with his children and explained it. As always we have the quick hitters at the end.
Thanks again to everyone for listening! -
This episode, we invite our good friend Josh Keh to the podcast to discuss the recent events and his upbringing. Josh is a theatre tech guru and also a theatre tech teacher in Culver City, CA. We discuss his growing up outside the United States and what kind of perspective that gives him and how he looks at America of today. Sit down, get some popcorn, and let Josh and Jon's discussion give you a different perspective on American Life.

In this episode we talk to our good friend, colleague, and owner of Audio for the Arts in Madison Wisconsin, Audrey Martinovich. We discuss her upbringing in Mt Horeb Wi, and how she helped her high school recognize LGBTQ students and giving them representation. How she makes it in a male dominated business that she kills it in. Her moving to Castle Gray Skull in Blanchardville WI and her run in with the locals from the Homecoming parade in 2019. Reactions to Jacob Blake, and the Kenosha shooter, and how it's affected the Madison Police force. Plus the most little nuggets of fun that we don't have time to type out. Enjoy and thanks for listening!
