  • Self abandonment can be described as "...rejecting, suppressing or ignoring part of yourself in real-time. In other words, you have a need or desire you want to meet, and (often on the spot) you make the decision not to meet it.

This typically comes from a place of fear, guilt, shame, etc. Sometimes we self abandon out of the need to be safe in our environment, and that's okay. However, when in a safe environment, there is no need to repress or reject anymore, so it is nice to have awareness of this concept.

Self abandonment is something I have an extensive history of. From repressing my inner artist, to my sexuality, to my needs for rest, or even my ethnic/religious background, I have left many parts of myself in the dust. This, (for me and my experience), has manifested in gnarly depressive episodes, a permanent vocal injury, an eating disorder, and on. I am grateful for the reflecting I did in this area. It led me to recognize the abandoning I did. Now, I do my best to honor any and every part of me (given my safety is not at jeopardy) and I must say, it is hella f*cking empowering.

It is nothing to be ashamed of and something worth being aware of. You are who you are, your needs are what they are, and the more we do not honor ourselves, the more we abandon, the more we may hurt inside. And that's no fun.

"Here are two questions you can apply to any situation to determine if you are operating from self-abandonment:

"For what reason am I making this decision?" If the answer involves guilt, shame, fear, timidity or generally negative emotions, you might be in abandonment mode. "If I were the only person on earth, would I still want to do ___?"This removes other people's influence from your decision-making and frees you up to determine how you actually feel."

  • There is so much to say about this one! Let's start with this first:

DISCLAIMER: This is my personal experience/ I can only speak to my personal experience. I am NOT a mental health professional. Do not diagnose yourself! Reach out to a professional for guidance.

I have been wanting to record my personal story with B.E.D. foevaaaa now. This is a deep rooted experience and so naturally there are things left out of this episode, but I hit all of the major pillars that I think are most important. I take you through my childhood, relationship to food, early adolescence, early adulthood, getting diagnosed, how I recovered and where I am at today, which is wild to say but- binge free! It was not the food itself necessarily, but my inability or lack of tools to process negative emotions in a healthy way. Now I excersize things like: radical acceptance and not fighting my negative feelings, allowing my feelings to come up and out rather than pushing them down, journaling, opening up about how I am feeling in a safe space (usually a friend I trust or therapist), meditate, etc.

    Resources I mention include:

Food Addiction Recovery Workbook by Carolyn Coker, MD, MPH. www.psychologytoday.com (to find a therapist)  Overeater's Anonymous, much like A.A. and N.A. • 5 months ago Paula and I recorded an episode at the end of our 2 week excursion, traveling around Utah, Nevada, and California. This trip was profoundly healing for us. We each were experiencing some level of the “Dark Night of the Soul” aka a spiritual/emotional crisis. Nonetheless, we did not know what was in store for our hearts and minds. From the drives, to the hikes, conversations, and exchanges, we were led to a rehabbing of our spirits.

In this episode we talk about:

Paula’s aspirations to find a way to work remotely to be able to travel sustainably/ Her various businesses: Retreat Me Travel, Threads for Education (which she no longer owns) Our wild “hike” down the lava tubes in Dammeron Valley, Utah, the meditation I led for the girls and I (several hundred feet beneath the ground) Our own experiences with anxiety and depression-- “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” Turning on the light can be something like reaching out to a mental health professional / Dr who can help you.  “Where every you go, there you are” Paula opens up about her grappling with feelings of sadness even while traveling, being around beautiful views and national parks Trials, tribulations, and pivotal moments: ending karmic cycles, leaving jobs, starting new ones, making big life decisions/ changes Paula getting arrested in high school in the name of journalism (lol)

  • Shirin Eskandani is Personal Coach, in the areas of  mindfulness, mindset, and manifestation based out of NYC. Her business, Wholehearted Coaching, is a life coaching business geared towards helping folks gain clarity, alchemize their traumas into gold, and have action based steps on improving whatever areas of their lives they desire. Before stepping into the world of coaching she was a professional opera singer for 10+ years. She has been a profound teacher for me, a big sister from a distance, being we both have artistic, immigrant, and Islamic backgrounds.

More info on her IG: @wholeheartedcoaching as well as her own podcast "Wholehearted Coaching: The Podcast"

In this episode we talk about:

The birth of Wholehearted Coaching, stepping into the wellness space as one of the few POC, and her current endeavors to make her wellness practices and business as accessible as possible Toxic narratives in the world of performing arts, navigating constant criticism, rejection, and  judgement/ the toll this takes on mental health, the lack of healthy coping mechanisms offered for performers, how much of an asshole we can be to ourselves rather than an inner ally, & how this can lead to losing your love for the craft and overly getting caught up on the business side of it Awakenings - Often times they can happen when we finally attain something we thought we wanted so deeply, only to realize we aren't any more secure, confident, or happy. There can be an inner dialogue like "Once I get skinny, I'll be happy" or "Once I land that dream job, I will feel worthy", where really this isn't the case and we have to rather go inward. Shirin shares her wake up call as a professional opera singer, realizing that even with getting her dream role/contract in "Carmen" (The Opera) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, she was not any happier or more secure. During the highest point of her career was one of the darker times of her life. • Woo! Finally got to LA! We are slowly but surely settling in. In this episode I talk about:

I am finding that LA is NYC’s twin
just a super fraternal one. There are so many parallels but its still SO different
 but not
 LOL!

The first night I got here I was definitely overwhelmed and scared. It really hit me that my road trip was over, my mini vacay in San Diego was over and that it was really time to double down and get my life together. For a moment I felt alone in a city
but needless to say, that is a major part of this process and a temporary one. I accept that and I know things will fall into place little by little (even though I prefer it be all at once and fast, haha, but that’s just not how it works)

The traffic is not as bad as I was told
seriously. Like going to and from downtown during rush hour, yikes, but outside of the downtown area, which is fairly small, it isn’t THAT bad. Also, people do honk at you. Also, it is no where near as slow as people made it out to be. LA is very much a city and people have places they need to be.

The “everyone is something in LA” saying is super true. Everyone I have met is some sort of director, writer, actor, etc. and there is a lot of name dropping so def experienced some culture shock there.

Overall, I am so fucking stoked to experience the fuck out of this city!
