this small work barely made it out from underneath all the pears, apples, grapes, plums and asian pears that we've been turning into every sort of preserve we can think of. still, here it is, smelling of cool september mornings and warm fruit crumbles, wearing a cardigan and wool socks and welcoming you with a cup of tea.
this piece was originally written for homesteadmamas.
i'm very excited to catch a scent in the air so reminiscent of every september's new possibilities, and i'm looking forward to picking up my writing and filmmaking in earnest, between the late summer waves of harvesting and preserving. there are so many pieces in the works, i cannot wait to share with you.
thank you to the appleturnover patrons. if you love these small works, subscribe to the 'letters' for a not-exactly-a-substack weeklyish piece from elisa rathje.

pausing the small works as harvest season hits one of its peaks in the food forest, but not to worry, appleturnover has a treat for you: a conversation with manda scott over at the inimitable 'accidental gods' podcast, called, The Art of Living Well: A Creative Life on the Land. people are saying they love this wide-ranging conversation, and found many sources of inspiration and action. if you've been wanting to get to know elisa rathje's work better this is a great dose of the philosophy, the praxis, of her approach to living regeneratively. if you'd like support in your own regenerative transformations, you'd love the appleturnover membership, check it out here.
thanks for listening, and catch you in september!

like active hope, this small work touches the bleakness of our deep concern and the terminal prognosis of the state we are in, but moves forward into looking at what's possible from a perspective that takes into account the deep capacities of our greater system for healing and regeneration. with gratitude to suzanne simard's work with the mother tree and robin wall kimmerer's braiding sweetgrass, joanna macey and others' work with active hope and the work that reconnects, this episode dwells in possibility.
thank you to the appleturnover members for your tremendous support. this letter was originally written to the letter patrons. if this work resonates with you and you'd like to be immersed in it more deeply, and to get early access to episodes, find out more at appleturnover. thanks for sharing these words, and look out for the journal of small work* book as it forms from them.

this small work is a meditation on being and how we might reimagine who we are, before we begin to imagine how we can be in the world in a way that makes more life. i may have lulled my own self into 'soft fascination' with this one. if you'd like to spend time in dialogue with me at our monthly conversation inspired by a tour of what's riveting at this moment on the farm, check out the membership to join us on the second saturday of the month (and get access to the private archive of tours and conversations, as well as receiving the journal of small work* book as it emerges -- of which this is the live writing of part III). follow appleturnover on patreon for more.

this small work looks at our fluencies as we reskill and reconnect with heritage and resilience, while repatterning another future, one based in collaboration. if you like this work you might like to look at, if you aren't already familiar, 'braiding sweetgrass' by robin wall kimmerer, 'less is more' by jason hickel, and the work that reconnects by joanna macey, in particular the active hope training. thank you to the appleturnover members for supporting this writing in the first place, and this podcast. there's a playlist of filmed podcasts at appleturnover on youtube, if that is your preference. as ever, your five-stars extend the reach of my words as does your kind sharing of this small work. thanks for listening. follow appleturnover on patreon for more.

and so we end the year as we began it, thinking about writing as a tool for orienting ourselves to the future we are co-creating with our daily actions. clarifying where we have been and preparing for where we may be going, reimagining possible futures while managing all that is within our tending, this is the work of our time.
i bid you a happy mid-winter, or mid-summer, north or south, and take my leave for a while.
thank you to the radio patrons, for your support.

this small work* agrees that moving into positive futures requires great inner transformation, which in turn demands gentleness and compassion. practicing this on a small scale prepares us, even if it is granular and everyday, even if it's just finding another approach to doing the washing up. get the postcards to hear whenever new films and other appleturnover projects are released, and become a subscriber to the weekly letters here. follow appleturnover on patreon for more.

on reviving the thrifty, self-reliant skills of home as resistance and reinvention, a reimagining of what our future could be like. this small work* is a friend of the appleturnover film, 'grain mill', and in particular, of making fresh pasta by hand. the recipe, more of a basic pattern, is included. what if the practices that make us resilient are also a great pleasure? if this work is resonating with you, it helps so much to leave a review or 5 stars, or share it, and if this work fits with a vision you'd like to spend more time immersed in consider becoming a patron at patreon.com/appleturnover. patrons receive the seasons in the form of a little book in serial form. thanks for listening to the sunday radio companion to the journal of small work*. find all the films at appleturnover.tv. x elisa follow appleturnover on patreon for more.

this tiny piece looks at what works in our culture, to find the patterns that help us to leave behind frameworks of competition and scarcity, for a fundamental shift toward collaboration and sufficiency for all, as a response to converging crises. this small work, like a gardener creates the conditions – is the little sibling of the journal of small work* film on appropriate technology and downshifting, 'pulley airer'. find out more about these regenerative projects and be a part of making them happen, and through them, expanding your own contributions to positive futures, at appleturnover on patreon. thanks ever so much for listening, sharing, and subscribing. x elisa follow appleturnover on patreon for more.

picturing possible, compelling futures. this small work* is a moment spent in seeing where we are now, how we are transfigured by recent years, acknowledging the profound change that is happening and connecting to each other and the greater world to begin to live in a way that is remarkably different.
