  • Recording and producing vocals is arguably the most important part of the music creation process. With this in mind I thought it was appropriate to get a University Lecturer on the podcast to help us with this!

Dr Richard Molloy has spent time lecturing in University College Cork and just recently gave a presentation to the Taoiseach (Prime minister) here in Ireland on the future of Music Education.

In this podcast we talk condenser & dynamic microphones, how to soundproof your room, how to set up your vocal chain, the best way to mix your vocals, vocal recording mistakes to watch out for and much much more.

Richard shared so much great information with me on this podcast so I can't wait to have him back on again.

  • How Taylor Swift Broke the Music Industry (Genius Strategy)

Taylor Swift is one of the smartest songwriters out there today. Taylor's production has won her multiple Grammy Awards and multiple chart topping songs.  In this Taylor Swift Marketing breakdown, we will look at how Taylor performed a masterclass in album promotion for RED (Taylor's Version). Taylor Swift has been one of the biggest names in the music industry for the past twenty years, and in this video we will look at how she has done that. In my opinion she has used 3 main steps to achieve this.

First, she really cares about her fans and how she engages with them. She takes time to listen and to read their feedback. She takes this feedback seriously and genuinely implements their advice into her business strategy and song releases!

Secondly, Taylor is open and honest. She writes openly about her struggles and this brings the audience in closer. Taylor even makes use of Controversy to her advantage. Examples of this would be her 10 minute release of 'All Too Well'.

Thirdly, Taylor has fought hard for her independence. Since finishing her contract with her old record label, she has been able to be in creative control of her new music. Tay Tay has used this to her advantage as she has released songs she wants to, and makes music videos / short movies where she wants to! Independence is everything, and Taylor is making full use of that now.

I'm Hugh, or 93 Acres and I hope you enjoy this video about the incredible Taylor Swift!

  • In this Disclosure Production breakdown we will look at how they produces their tracks and how they make their unique production, along with some of their songwriting tips. Disclosure has taken the world by storm. Their unique productions have been impressing everyone from fans, to the worlds most experienced musicians. But how have they done it? In my opinion they has used four main steps to achieve this.

First they collaborate a lot, writing with friends and artists they admire. They enjoy this process so much it shows in the end product. Enjoying the process makes it a lot easier to spend more time refining your tracks.

Secondly, they take inspiration from many different genres, in particular genres that aren't being used at that current time. This allows them to take unique sounds and rhythms from those genres and implement them into their own music.

Thirdly, Guy and Howard have had the perfect mental fortitude and view point from the beginning of their music careers. They understand that growing over time is far more valuable than being an overnight success. As with any top professional, perspective can be a hugely useful tool.

Lastly, Disclosure started streaming on Twitch recently. On their channel they have been giving away many production and mixing tips and tricks, most specifically in the Logic Pro X. Every stream contains multiple gems of information that would help any music producer. Their years of experience show, so they are fantastic producers to learn from.

  • In this Charlie Puth breakdown we will look at how Charlie produces his tracks and how he makes his unique production, along with some of his songwriting tips.

His unique productions have been impressing everyone from fans, to the worlds most experienced musicians. But how has he done it?

In my opinion he has used four main steps to achieve this.

First, he uses songwriting tips such as using the word "You" to draw in the listener and make them feel like they are being directly communicated with.

Secondly, he uses multiple production techniques that help him stand out. He uses real sounds from the environment around him. This instantly creates uniqueness, as he is the only person with these sounds or samples. Charlie also doubles his drum sounds with his beatboxing.

Thirdly, Charlie Puth loves getting inspiration from many different areas. One place in particular is the same as my Finneas & Pharrell podcasts show that they find inspiration from old styles of music that are not currently being used in pop music.

Lastly, Charlie is in full creative control as he can write, record, produce, mix and master all of his own music. He doesn't have to rely on anyone else. This gives him independence, and also ensures his style is stamped all over his music.

  • There is more to making a recording of a song that meets the eye. So in this episode we will take a look at the 5 different careers and steps in Music Technology.

We will focus on what makes each step unique, and what sort of traits suit that career. Everything in the podcast is information I wish I knew when I started making music, so I really hope you can learn something from it!

    The steps are as follows:

    - Songwriting (Creating the Lyrics, Melody, Chords, Key, BPM)

    - Recording (Recording Audio files into the DAW - Digital Audio Workstation)

    - Producing (Creating a soundscape with instruments, textures and sounds that suit the emotion of the song)

    - Mixing (Setting the levels, panning, and effects that go on each of the instruments and sounds)

    - Mastering (Making the track louder, more compressed, and sounding great on multiple sound systems)

If you have any more questions, feel free to write to me @93acres on Instagram!

  • In this episode we will discuss how Pharrell Built His Music Empire.

We will also look at how Pharrell produces his tracks and how he makes his unique production. Pharrell has been one of the biggest names in the music industry for the past twenty years, but how has he done it? In my opinion he has used four main steps to achieve this.

    - First, he really cares for the collaborating. Especially when he collaborates with his life long friend Chad Hugo. When he produces with other artists, he knows how to get the best out of them. Collaboration is a difficult skill to master but Pharrell certainly has.

    - Secondly, he uses unique sounds and production techniques in his music. This instantly creates a reaction in the listener as the sound will be like nothing they have heard before. Pharrell and Chad's sound has been sought after for many years.

    - Thirdly, Pharrell loves working hard. He would be doing it even if it wasn't his main source of income. This passion allows him to work day and night, even on tour. Allowing his abilities to be ever improving.

    - Lastly, Pharrell always perseveres. He had 9 song attempts rejected for Dispicable Me 2, before his tenth submission was accepted. We will all fail, but we must learn from it and not let it deter us! Pharrell has certainly mastered this.

  • Finneas is one of the smartest producers out there today. His production has won him multiple grammys, multiple chart topping songs, impressing everyone from fans, to the worlds most experienced musicians. But how has he done it?

In my opinion he has used three main steps to achieve this.

    - First, he really cares for the authenticity in every track. When he producer for another artist, he will get to know them on a personal level. This will allow him to channel that authenticity and uniqueness from that artist into the production.

    - Secondly, he uses real sounds from the environment around him. This instantly creates even more uniqueness, as he is the only person with these sounds or samples.

    - Thirdly, Finneas loves producing. He would be doing it even if it wasn't his main source of income. This passion allows him to work day and night, even on tour. Allowing his abilities to be ever improving.

I will go into further detail on all these points in this podcast, so I really hope you can learn something from it!
