Ben Levesque joins us at the shop to talk shop about shows, concerts, gigs and such! Ben has been with Manic Presents for about as long as we've had the store now (over 17 years!), but recently made a huge jump from working essentially 2 full time jobs to dedicating all his time to Manic Presents in a yet to be named position. When it comes to running and booking shows he's a jack of all trades. We talk about some inside baseball - the inner workings of things without blowing up any spots.
Ben of Manic Presents
We talk about music in general and we push out in all directions pertaining to Manic Presents and its venues and what Ben hopes to do with all of those and more!
You can buy tickets to all their shows at the store with no online extra fees (they are emailed and not physical, but no fees). You can also check them out online (and buy tickets) through their site:

Nick & Tim helm a relatively new project called Disfigure. So far, they have just one tape release though they are working on more. Nick worked on many of the songs in relative isolation while living in New Hampshire and then recorded them with Tim once back in CT.
We start as usual talking about what we're listening to. We recorded in October which lent itself to some opening talk about horror movies and bake off. We quickly veer into how the band started and what inspired it to happen; how they were inspired by Godflesh, d-beat and black metal to create their sound.
Conversation continues down that path and veers off until we finally trail off talking about the first Redscroll release after becoming a store, Hostage Calm's Lens - a record Tim is on and a band Nick later joined and also a band that bares little other connection to this current project sound-wise other than the people who made it. Anyway! Battle metal madness!

We are joined by a man, Byron Coley, who has more stories than we could fit into every past episode of our podcast and we surely packed as much as we could into a single sit down. We start off with some talk about what we're listening to as usual and we move on to record fair talk (don't forget about our Record Fair at Counter Weight Brewing Co. on October 13th featuring Byron selling upstairs!).
Byron tells tales of driving John Fahey around looking for classical records, his process for listening to 10 new records everyday, writing for weekly publications and magazines like the Wire, Forced Exposure, Spin and on and on. We talk about the label and store he runs with his friend Ted in Florence, Western Massachusetts.
We go back to his start writing a tour diary with Devo, but this is yet a scratch on the surface and this podcast is our longest yet for good reason! Check it out!

This month Paul and Will joined us on the podcast. Paul sings and Will plays guitar in Dissolve. We just released their latest record, Burnt and absolutely were honored and stoked to do so. Dissolve has been around since 1991 and released records with wide time gaps between them. They endure and we talk about how that works with their band and how those releases have progressed to the most recent record, Burnt.
Dissolve's Paul & Will
We talk about the bands they played with and other bands they were in. We talk briefly about Paul's writing career (a book of short stories called Weakling Planet) and how that relates to how he writes lyrics. We talk about the bands they got to see and play with in the 90s and we go on from there. Check it out!

On this episode we talk to the purveyors of Little Lost Records in Stafford Springs, CT. Musical folks looking to spread their love of music in the North East corner of CT opened their store just about a year ago. Conor and Abbie discuss meeting through their connection to Paul Winter! Through that connection they opened this new store. Randy (previously on our podcast in 2017 as a member of the band Cable) visited their shop opening day and quickly became a regular and soon partner! Listen to all the details on this episode!
We talk about the music we're listening to. We talk about the music they make outside of the shop. We talk about the music that happens in their shop! We talk about the music made by another shopkeep, Ian of Records the Good Kind (check out his episode on the podcast here and his musical project, The Aspersions here and his previous group Musical Chairs here). We talk about the town of Stafford Springs and what they'd like to see move in to their town. We go off in a few directions. Take a listen!

Here it is - the end of the year favorites podcast including lists by each staff member here at Redscroll! The podcast has a clip from each album. It's a fun listen! Whoops... mostly music! [Lists are alphabetical - no particular order otherwise. Some of Josh's and Rick's lists got tacked on at the end with fun text to voice notes.]
First off, these are things we loved enough to release and Josh and I (Rick) didn't include in our own favorites list because it is basically a given.

John Zaccaria writes music as The Knife Kickers. Friends fill out the band; it is a rotating cast with John at the center. Ryan Prushinski helped with the latest record that is set to come out in early 2024. Ryan played drums on just over half the songs (he also drums in Doom Beach who've been on the pod before; click here for that) and produced/engineered the recording of the album.
We talk to John and Ryan about the new record, playing music in general and how the local indie rock scene gave way to his musical journey. We have the privilege of playing a few songs from the new album (one in full at the end of the interview and a couple partial songs in the mix of the interview).

Undergrounds Record Cafe opened under a year ago (about 8 months) in Oakville, CT. https://undergroundsrecordcafe.com/
We are joined this month by Nick & Dean - the owners of this new hybrid café and record shop. Dean has been shopping with us basically since we opened and his son Nick used to tag along and get lost in the racks (or go over to the sports memorabilia shop and come back to wrangle dad). Time keeps on moving! We start off in the same way we usually do - talking about what we're listening to. We then move the conversation to different aspects of the restaurant and Nick's culinary background. We talk to Dean about what they carry and how they've been reaching more and more folks as word gets out.Nick and Dean of Undergrounds Record Cafe
Dean will also be at our record fair next Sunday with a table full of records (and maybe some bread or some sort of sampling from the café?! Something's in the works. ). Conversation pushes towards what the future holds for the restaurant and possible events and possible dinner services (special occasions).

Anonymity reigns within the dark realm of black metal. We interviewed an entity known to us here as Ajna. Ajna healms Forest Thrall and plays in Vengeance Sorcery, Cerberus, Sravana, Cemetery Lights and likely more currently active and some that are at this time conceptual acts.
We talk about the Vengeance Sorcery experience of playing Nuclear War Now Fest in Tijuana, Mexico. Ajna goes into depth on the musical paths taken in listening and in playing and gives a short anecdote about how a member of Dokken presented as a sort of missed connection on a tow truck route. We talk about nature and the scourge of the litterer! We veer off on 108 mystic and odd directions and of course we talk about the music we're listening to!

This month we had a chat with Matt Westfall, owner of Counter Weight Brewing Co. We've known Matt for years through music (going to punk shows in our youth) and Counter Weight has been a venue for music here and there since it opened (originally in Hamden and now in Cheshire). It's also where we hold an annual record fair (coming up in October again). We talk about how Counter Weight is ramping up their events schedule with music and comedy and various other events. We also do talk about beer. It's true. We talk about the Counter Weight accolades and how they like to take input from anyone under their roof and getting involved is highly encouraged - generally trying to teach from within and grow.
We don't talk about sprint car racing or animating Bob's Burgers (things done by other people with the name Matt Westfall). We do talk about the role bocce has played in his life and the art and naming of beers. Conversation stretches out from there.
There is a show we'll be selling records at coming up on July 6th, 2023:

This month on the podcast we're joined by Senti & Vaughn of Ephyra - a collective of 7 folks releasing metalcore that sounds 20 years displaced! Really wild to take a listen for the first time and think this is not from that original era this takes heavy influence from. We talk about all the bands currently on the label and all the members of the bands and who plays what in which. Tight group playing in quite a few formations. We talk about everything we're listening to as usual and conversation ensues as usual!
We talk about label demands and how Ephyra caught on much more than they ever expected faster than could be. CD and tape production specifics are talked about; nice little tips and tricks if you're starting anything up (one of which being - have someone who's good at accounting). Prayer for Cleansing, Undying, Incubus, Limp Bizkit, a laundry list of bands mentioned... Love Lost But Not Forgotten, deadeyesunder, A Thousand Falling Skies... Jay from Papercut may have been in the room too.

Ross Wightman performs and teaches and builds and makes/creates/composes. A classical double bassist who came to Connecticut through a program at Yale, Ross now finds himself traveling in the tri-state area weekly for work between NY, NJ and CT and seems to enjoy it! The Water Feature and Fiddle Henge are two instruments Ross has put together from scratch! We talk about all that and what led to it and we talk about what we're listening to as well!
From New Brunswick basement shows to playing in a tuxedo, Ross has had an academic and DIY varied background in music and life in general (skateboarding/punk intro etc.). Good talk here! Check it out!

We talked with Matty, Nicholas & George of Shirese this month! Lots of real CT insider talk in this one. I tried to insert context when needed. The New Hawaii, Popeye's Garage, the Osbourne House and more DIY spots of yore! Rock and Roll gets heralded as well as some jazz fusion. Good times.
Shirese has a new record and played a great show at Cafe 9 in celebration of its release so we talk about that at length. And we just jaw on about any given subject - like music for instance.
