On this special guest interview episode of The Wellness Transcription Podcast, Dr. Patrick Gurley, PharmD, MSCN sits down with Brian Albrecht to discuss a variety of challenges Christian men face and the importance of finding a community, of fellow believers, men can share their struggles with. Brian received pastoral training at Dallas Theological Seminary and is currently the Men's Ministry Pastor at Austin Ridge Bible Church in Austin, Texas. Before coming to Austin Ridge, Brian was the executive director for Cornerstone Restoration, of which he is currently a board member. Cornerstone Restoration is an organization that restores hope to vulnerable populations, in central Texas, through various construction-based projects. During his time at Cornerstone, Brian and countless volunteers served the physical and spiritual needs of the eldelry, widows, single parents, children, veterans, handicapped, and survivors of sexual trafficking and exploitation, Their mission continues to this day. At Austin Ridge, Brian and his fellow colleagues lead a community of men that seek and pursue Jesus in their families, the workplace, and the world. Dr. Foster is the director of the Arkansas Poison and Drug Information center and is an associate professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy. Dr. Foster is also the founder & CEO of ATP Therapeutics Inc. Dr. Gurley and Dr. Foster dicuss a variety of topics including: what defines a poison or toxin, why we shouldnt use the term "toxin" to demonize certain foods/ingredients, how important dosing is when determining the toxicity of any substance, which medications and household items can become a cause for concern, and when to reach out to the poison control center for help. This is an important episode for any parent who wants to know more about what they should do if their child accidently ends up in a situation where poison control needs to be notified. On this episode of the Wellness Transcription Podcast, Dr. Patrick Gurley, PharmD, MSCN welcomes Dr. Ryan Yates, PhD, PharmD back as the first returning guest on TWTP. In this episode, Dr. Gurley and Dr. Yates do a scientific deep dive into remnant cholesterol, what it is, why you should know about it, and what you can do to control if it's elevated. Remnant cholesterol is a lesser known lipid measurement when it comes to diagnosing and managing dydlipidemia. However, highly elevated remnant cholesterol levels have been shown to increase a persons risk for athersclerotic heart disease (ASCVD), heart attack, new-onset type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, low-grade systemic inflammation, and mortality. In fact, remnant cholesterol has been shown to predict cardiovascular disease beyond LDL and ApoB in patients without known ASCVD. Lastly. Dr. Yates and Dr. Gurley talk about the effects the phytochemical sesamin has on manging remnant cholesterol, LDL, HDL, ApoB, and Lp(a) & lastly they talk in greater detail about the role their new dietary supplement product LIV Formula #1 plays in this very space. Dr. Patrick Gurley, PharmD, MSCN sits down with Dr. Bill Gurley Ph.D. Dr. Gurley is a professor and Principal Scientist, at the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR), School of Pharmacy, University of Mississippi; Chair of the University of Mississippi Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Prior to joining the NCNPR in 2019, Gurley was Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy, Vice-Chair of the UAMS Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Chair of the UAMS Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Gurley has been conducting basic and clinical research on various aspects of dietary supplement efficacy and safety for almost 30 years. His research on Ephedra-containing dietary supplements was used by the FDA to remove those problematic products from the U.S. market in 2004. He was the first investigator to systematically evaluate the herb-drug interaction potential of popular dietary supplements and to assess their clinical relevance. Accordingly, his research team was the first to document the serious clinical repercussions of herb-drug interactions involving St. John’s wort. Gurley’s research interests include pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of herb-drug interactions, toxicity of multiple-component herbal dietary supplements, phytochemical modulation of human drug metabolizing enzymes/transport proteins, and human phytochemical disposition, all of which have been the subject of more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He is a member of the United States Pharmacopoeia’s Expert Panel on Dietary Supplements, an advisor to the American Botanical Council, and a co-editor of the American Herbal Products Association’s Botanical Safety Handbook. He sits on the editorial boards for the journals Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Phytomedicine, HerbalGram, and Clinical Therapeutics. Gurley received a B.S. in Chemistry from Tennessee Technological University and a B.S. in Pharmacy and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
