  • What did your host, Brittany Lynch, BScN, RN, Certified Stepfamily Counsellor, discover about the importance of limit-setting and rule enforcement in a blended family, after having an ice bucket dumped over her head?

One of the greatest causes for concern in stepfamily is a household divided over manners, expectations, and responsibilities. Resentment, disrespect, and a sense of unpredictability are common in blended families that lack the necessary structures to function at a healthy level.

A term commonly used by stressed-out step parents, "Disneyland Dad," (or mom, though less often) usually refers to a single parent who, for a multitude of very valid reasons, will tend toward leniency with rules and indulgence with resources. This episode discusses several important factors that contribute to a divorced dad or single mom's avoidance of strict rules or adherence to any specific schedule or routine.

Find out in this episode what to do if your blended family is experiencing this very common stepfamily dynamic, and what you and your partner can do today to have even more peace and even more connection with the people you love most in the world.

  • If we pretend that blended families are the same as biological intact families, then we are failing to respect the unique vulnerabilities only found within this family type. With 2 in every 3 stepfamilies expected to fail, we are being called to acknowledge and tend to our unique relationship dynamics in a loving and supportive way.

Knowing what makes a stepfamily different from a nuclear (aka intact, biological, traditional, first) family will equip you with invaluable knowledge and a new perspective that allows for more love, harmony, and authenticity at home -- for The Whole Stepfamily

    In this episode, we'll examine:

The most critical differentiator between stepfamilies and biological intact familiesWhat makes stepfamilies so vulnerable and WHY we must take radical personal responsibility for our children's (and our own) sakeThe critical developmental task in stepfamily that will help you to establish safety, structure and predictability in a blended familyHow biology affects family roles and the development of functional step-relationshipsThe social expectation that stepparents love their stepchildren "like their own" The experience of being an outsider and how it relates to each stepfamily member's role

  • Did you know that over 1300 new stepfamilies form every single day in the United States alone? Or that 40% of all new marriages include at least one partner who has been divorced before? Or that more children live in step-situations than not?

Did you also know that, technically, a step-situation begins after the breakup of the first family, and as soon as the single parent begins dating. This means that stepfamilies are formed even before a single parent begins living with, or remarries, a new partner.

Now, how many of those stepfamilies do you expect will stand the test of time? How many stepfamilies actually do go on to live Happily Ever After? And maybe more importantly, how do they do it?

  • One of the biggest issues many stepmoms of young stepkids face is navigating the bedtime struggle.

Different rules by each parent can almost guarantee a sleep disruption when kids transition back and forth between their homes.

Guilt and a sense of missing out on parenting time can create the urge to keep kids up late in order to spend more time with them.

Fear of coming across as too strict or harsh can prevent some parents from implementing and enforcing a structured bedtime.

The reasons behind poor sleep in kids of stepfamilies are complex and multifaceted. But why is it so important to give our kids the sleep they need? And more importantly, how can you break bad sleep habits that have been created unintentionally, and replace them with nourishing and restorative sleep patterns?

Special guest Dana Obleman shares her take this week.

Dana began her private practice in Vancouver, Canada in 2003. After struggling with her own child’s sleep, she drew on her dual degrees in Psychology and Education to create The Sleep Sense™ Program, a complete sleep resource for parents which has sold over 100,000 copies in more than 30 countries.

Since writing The Sleep Sense Program, she has authored an additional four books on specific parenting challenges. Over 100,000 individuals follow her on Facebook and Instagram, her instructional YouTube videos have over 3.5 million views, her parenting blog and website average 90,000 unique visitors per month, and her weekly podcast has over half a million downloads.

She has been a featured speaker at major parenting trade shows, a frequent guest on radio and television programs, and her work has been highlighted on Good Morning America, CNN, Today’s Parent, WebMD, The Washington Post, and many other prominent media publications. She has personally trained a global network of over 300 Certified Sleep Sense™ Consultants to carry on her work in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Namibia, Finland, and the United Kingdom, as well as the United States and Canada. Today, Dana lives in Sarasota, Florida with her husband and 3 children, where she continues her life’s work to educate and empower families with healthy sleep habits

  • Mark your calendar! Next Uplifted Challenge is kicking off February 24, 2022!

"The kids are awful. Their other parent is a terrible nightmare who never does anything right. My spouse is incompetent when it comes to parenting, so I need to step in and rescue them all the time otherwise nothing will get done..."

My life as a stepmom sucks and sometimes, I feel trapped.

If you're a stepmom who's ever found yourself having these thoughts (or saying these words at brunch with your bestie), then it sounds like you're (unfortunately) having a pretty standard experience as a stepmom.

But how does it feel in your body when these thoughts consume you?

Regardless of how many of those examples are true for you, the fact is that so many stepmoms are making this one critical mistake when it comes to working out their problems. Are you?

In this episode with your host, Stepfamily Counsellor Brittany Lynch, BScN, you'll find out:

Why so many stepmoms feel discouraged or hopeless about their stepfamily circumstancesOne critical mistake most stepmoms are making when it comes to problems in their stepfamiliesThe underlying motive behind all goals & dreamsHow you can start making simple adjustments in your thoughts, feelings, and habits to bring you closer to the life you want, and further from the life you don't want

Thanks for taking the time to rate & review the show, which helps other stepmoms get the help they're looking for!
