And while we’ve all heard that too much is bad for us, most people have no idea just how much they’re consuming, or what it’s really doing to their body.

It’s not just about cavities or a few extra pounds. Excess sugar consumption is one of the silent drivers behind metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and even heart disease.

And sugar substitutes? They might seem like the answer, but the science is still out and in some cases, troubling.

In this episode of Time to Transform, I break down the hard truths about processed sugar, natural sugars, and modern sweeteners. I explore the deeper impact of sweeteners on your long-term health, and how your genetics might make the risks even higher.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

    -The truth about natural sugar
We’re told fruit is healthy but what about honey, maple syrup, and fruit juice?

-Why South Asians are more at risk
Some people are more vulnerable to sugar’s effects, even in smaller amounts. How do genetics shape your risk for diabetes and heart disease?

    -The truth about sugar substitutes
Artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols, and plant-based options like stevia all come with trade-offs. Which ones are safest, and which ones could backfire?

-How to break the cycle of sugar addiction
Sugar hijacks your brain chemistry. So what does it take to regain control, without feeling deprived?

  • Breast cancer is one of the most talked-about health issues in the world, but there’s still so much we don’t discuss.

While mammograms and early detection campaigns have saved countless lives, the conversation often stops there.

What’s missing is a deeper look at the lifestyle, genetic, and environmental factors that play a pivotal role in prevention, and the small, daily changes that can make a massive impact.

That means we have far more power than we think. But to tap into it, we need better guidance, smarter screening strategies, and a stronger understanding of how our bodies work.

What kind of screenings should women get? How do factors like breast tissue increase the risk of breast cancer? In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Pamela Smith, an internationally recognized functional medicine physician, author of 14 bestselling books, and co-director of the Personalized Medicine Certification at the University of South Florida.

She shares science-backed strategies to reduce your risk, strengthen your immune system, and support your body before and after a diagnosis.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

The 3 things that feed cancer
Sugar, stress, and toxins are the trifecta that fuel cancer cell growth. But how do you realistically cut them out and what’s secretly making them worse?

Why 80% of breast cancer isn’t genetic
Family history matters but not as much as your environment. Which everyday exposures and habits have the biggest impact on your risk?

The truth about hormones and alcohol
Is hormone therapy safe? And what happens when you mix it with alcohol?

What most women don’t know about screening
Dense breast tissue, faulty methylation, even your gut health can affect your screening results. How do you make sure you’re getting the full picture of your health?

  • We all want to raise healthy, happy children. But when it comes to their mental health, there’s a lot of confusion about what’s normal and what needs attention.

You’ve probably heard things like, “Kids are just moody,” or “They’ll grow out of it.” But in today’s world, where screen time is up, attention spans are down, and anxiety is more common than ever, those casual explanations might be dangerously outdated.

After leading a wellness session for teachers and parents at a local school, I was overwhelmed by the questions and concerns around kids’ emotional and mental well-being.

So in this special “Science vs. Fiction” episode, I’m diving into the real science behind children’s mental health and busting the myths that keep families from getting the help they need.

I explore what mental health really means in children, how to recognize the signs of disorders like depression, anxiety, ADHD, and autism, and why early support can change the course of a child’s life.

  • Why do so many women hit their 40s and suddenly feel like their bodies are falling apart?

From exhaustion and weight gain to joint pain, brain fog, and disrupted sleep, midlife can feel like a slow unraveling, and for many, it’s blamed on menopause.

But what if it’s not just your hormones?

What if the symptoms we associate with menopause are only part of a much bigger picture? One that includes rising inflammation, stress, and disrupted recovery, catching up all at once?

What if understanding how menopause interacts with these other changes could give women more control over their health, not less?

This is where the concept of inflammaging comes in, and it might be the missing link in how we care for women in midlife.

In this episode, Dr. Wendy Sweet, PhD, researcher and women’s health expert, breaks down a radically more nuanced (and empowering) view of the menopause transition.

Menopause is actually an inflammatory phase of life, and its effects can be addressed with lifestyle interventions. Before we even consider Hormone Replacement Therapy, there are changes we can make with diet, movement, and sleep.

Through decades of research and work with thousands of women, Dr. Sweet has uncovered what most people miss: You can feel better if you adjust your habits to match the life stage you’re in.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

    -Menopause or inflammation
“Inflammaging” is the hidden force behind the fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, and gut issues menopausal women experience. How do we slow it down?

-Why your body might feel like it’s falling apart after 40
What physiological changes happen beneath the surface, and how do you adapt to them?

    -Rethinking the HRT-first approach
Before turning to hormone therapy, what if we changed our sleep, stress, and nutrition?

    -One-size-fits-all advice doesn’t work
What your body needs at 45 isn’t what it needs at 52. How do you tailor your movement, food, and recovery to your life phase?

    Guest Bio

She was a pioneer in New Zealand’s personal training industry with Les Mills International and later became a university lecturer, equipping her with both the academic and real-world expertise to challenge outdated menopause paradigms. Having personally struggled through her own menopause transition, Wendy now dedicates her work to educating and empowering women to thrive, not just survive, this powerful life stage. • We’ve all heard health tips that sound convincing, especially when they’re passed around in casual conversation or shared in social media reels.

Things like, “Cut out sugar and you’ll starve cancer,” or “Superfoods can cure disease.” These kinds of statements might sound reassuring, but are they backed by science?

After teaching my 6 Pillars of Health and Wellness at a local school, I found myself fielding lots of interesting questions from teachers, especially around cancer and lifestyle habits.

Can you really shrink cancer by cutting out sugar? Is cancer contagious? Are superfoods the magical cure we’ve all been waiting for?

In this episode, I unpack some of the most frequently asked (and misunderstood) questions about cancer and lifestyle habits, inspired by my recent wellness sessions with school staff.

  • Menopause is a natural phase of life, but for many women, it’s filled with confusion, discomfort, and a frustrating lack of support.

From hot flashes and joint pain to brain fog, mood swings, and disrupted sleep, the symptoms of menopause can be physically exhausting, emotionally taxing, and even socially isolating.

What makes it harder? We’re still not talking about it enough.

For decades, menopause has been treated like a taboo subject. Women are often left to suffer in silence, unsure if what they’re going through is “normal,” and hesitant to ask for help.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

There are proven strategies to help you manage symptoms, protect your long-term health, and feel like yourself again.

And some of the most effective solutions are surprisingly simple, starting with your lifestyle.

Menopause doesn’t have to be a downward spiral.

It can be a powerful opportunity to revamp your habits, strengthen your body, and take charge of your well-being for the next chapter of your life.

Is hormone therapy safe, and who should consider it? What simple lifestyle shifts can dramatically ease your symptoms?

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Malini Sharma, a board-certified OB/GYN and lifestyle medicine practitioner with a deep passion for helping women navigate menopause with confidence.

She breaks down the symptoms, treatment options, and small-but-mighty changes that can help you feel better, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

-The symptoms no one talks about
Menopause has many well-known symptoms, but what are the lesser-known challenges women face?

    -The emotional impact of menopause

Menopause doesn’t just change how you feel physically, it can take a toll on your mental health. What are some of the emotional and social challenges that come with it?

    -Addressing early menopause
Premature ovarian insufficiency affects younger women, sometimes even in their 20s. How do you spot it early? How do you deal with it?

    -MHT: safe or scary
Hormone therapy has a controversial reputation, but the truth is more nuanced. Who is it right for? Have the risks been misunderstood?

  • Many believe that Christianity and science are at odds, that one undermines the other, and that people have to choose only one. But the truth is, science and faith don’t just coexist—they complement each other in profound ways.

Science, in its quest for understanding the natural world, often leads us to a greater appreciation for the Creator. The beauty and precision of the universe—its fine-tuned physics—point not away from God, but directly to Him. God can be worshipped not only in the church, but also in the laboratory, as both realms reveal His order and majesty.

Throughout history, even figures like Galileo believed that truth found in science supports truth found in scripture. After all, all truth is God’s truth. Whether scientific or religious, truth lives in harmony.

How, then, do science and faith coexist?

In our humanity, we grasp only a limited piece of the truth, but God’s perspective encompasses all. How do we integrate the two realms in our own understanding?

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Joseph Vukov, a writer, speaker, and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Chicago, who explores the intersection of ethics, science, and religion. He’ll share how science can enrich our faith, not diminish it, and how we can love God and science at the same time.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

-God’s POV vs. the human perspective

As humans in a fallen world, our understanding of the Universe is limited. Is that why so many people struggle to see the harmony between science and religion?

    -Faith isn’t sub-rational, it’s supra-rational

Some people think the realm of faith exists underneath the realm ruled by science. How does faith go beyond reason and intellect?

-The deliberate Godly design behind the science of our Universe

The Universe’s design isn’t a case against God’s presence, but rather a strong sign of it. What does the fine-tuning argument reveal about the order of creation?

  • In the journey of following Christ, it's important to realize that we're engaged in a spiritual battle, not just for our souls but also for our bodies. Taking responsibility for our health isn't merely a personal choice—it’s an act of spiritual resistance against the forces of evil.

Toxins, chemicals, junk food, and substances are not just physical threats—they are strategies of spiritual warfare designed to weaken the body of Christ. When we align our physical health with our spiritual health, we stand in resistance to these attacks and become stronger vessels for God’s work. The value of taking care of our bodies isn’t just backed by science, it’s also in scripture.

  • We’ve all heard the phrase, “Sleep is for the weak,” and in today’s fast-paced world, it might seem like a badge of honor to function on minimal sleep. You may also have heard people say, "If I can get by on 6 hours or less of sleep, I must be tough." Or you’ve said, "I can catch up on sleep over the weekend."

These are just a few of the sleep myths that continue to circulate in our fast-paced society, myths that can drown out the truth and prevent us from getting the rest we truly need.

But what if these widely-held beliefs are dangerous myths that are costing us our health? The science of sleep tells us that sleep is not just rest – it’s a biological necessity and a key pillar of our overall well-being.

What are the biggest misconceptions about sleep health?

In this episode, I’ll break down the most common sleep misconceptions, and reveal the truth behind them. Let’s dig into the science and set the record straight.

  • In the journey to improving our health, diet and exercise are considered the paramount activities that lead to transformation. While focusing on those two areas is important, we also need to prioritize spiritual growth.

In order to experience physical transformation, we have to transform spiritually and mentally first.

That’s why I developed a program with 6 pillars, and took a more holistic approach that tends to your entire being. Everyone wants to be healthier, but implementing lasting change is easier said than done.

When we bring God into the process, and stop striving in our own power, it gets easier. God is able to give us strength when it gets hard, and that spiritual aspect actually cascades into all the other aspects of improving ourselves.

How do you set yourself up for lasting success when it comes to health? How do you build solid habits that can withstand disruptions in your routine?

In this episode, I’m joined by one of my clients, Harsha Jayatunge. He shares his experience in the TLC 6 Pillar program, lessons he learned and what he’s done to implement long term change and transformation.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

-The piece that ties it all together

Committing to lifestyle changes can be challenging if we don’t bring God into the process. We can’t do it on our own strength. How does the spiritual aspect of the 6 pillars make it easier for us to achieve our health goals?

-How to make good habits stick

How do we bake our habits in so that when our lives or routines are disrupted, it’s easier to get back on the wagon?

-Setting yourself up for lasting success

Attaining better health isn’t just about taking the right medications and eating the right types/amounts of food. Why does mindset play such a huge role in the process?

  • When it comes to health, some of the most common issues are also the most misunderstood. Very often, the popular ideas people believe are actually more myth than fact - more fiction than science.

For example, the belief that a condition like urticaria is caused by food or environmental factors, when it actually isn’t. Or the belief that intense exercise is the only kind of exercise with real benefits, and finally, the confusion between food intolerance and food allergies.

There are many misconceptions that drown out the truth and hold you back from health.

How do we separate science from fiction in these areas? In this episode I share 3 common health misconception, and reveal the truth about them.

  • The world can be a noisy, confusing place that robs us of peace and our relationship with God.

His Word is one of the most powerful ways we can combat this and stay on the right path. The Bible itself tells us how powerful The Word is - it’s a sharp weapon that can cut through the lies of the enemy and the challenges life throws at us.

If you struggle to consistently read The Word, you’re not alone. Luckily there are a few simple steps you can take to make it a habit. In this episode, I talk about the power of God’s Word and how we can make it a prominent part of our lives.

  • As a society, we’re currently living through one of the worst epidemics we don’t talk about enough - loneliness. Loneliness impacts more than your social life.

Being isolated harms your physical and mental health as smoking, being obese and having a lot of stress. In nature and in God’s Word, we are constantly reminded that we’re not meant to move through life alone.

Being part of a community makes us feel like we belong, that we matter and that others care about us.

All of this leads to healthier, longer lives.

How do we combat the loneliness crisis? In this episode, I share why loneliness should be treated like another risk factor in health and wellness.

People who struggle with it endure years of discomfort, a drop in their quality of life, a revolving door of doctors, reams of blood tests and a multitude of treatments. These treatments often focus on food and finding out what they can stop eating to get better.

Though this is well-intentioned advice, it is misguided.

The food you eat isn’t the root cause of eczema. Growing data show that eczema is what causes food allergies. This changes everything about how eczema is treated, and also how to prevent it in infants.

For high-risk babies, early and frequent exposure to food can significantly reduce the chance of atopic dermatitis and potentially set them up for an allergy-free life.

In this episode, I’m joined by the Chief Medical Officer at Snö Asthma & Allergy, Dr. Stuart Carr. He shares the truth about atopic dermatitis, and why there are more treatment options on the table other than avoiding certain foods and hoping for the best.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

    -Sensitization vs. true allergy

Food sensitivity and allergy are two very different things that often get mixed up. How do doctors determine if you’re allergic to something?

-The right way to restrict your diet

Many people use elimination diets to try and combat allergies. How do you do this without actually increasing your chance of allergy?

-Early and often exposure is key

Parents of infants prone to eczema often delay the introduction of certain foods, could this actually make the likelihood of allergy higher?

-Food in mouth, but not on skin

Atopic dermatitis patients think eating certain foods will trigger a reaction. What actually triggers a reaction?

  • They say age is just a number…and no concept drives this point home more than biological age. You see, your chronological age isn’t the same as the age of your cells. That’s why you can have people who look younger (or older) than their stated age.

This has a lot to do with Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 or PAI-1.

People age at different rates and there are conditions and circumstances that make some age more rapidly than others. From climate, diet, stress and genetics, there are so many factors that impact the health of our cells.

Here’s the good news: how long we’ve been on the planet doesn’t have to dictate our health and wellness. There are proactive steps we can take to extend not just the span of our lives but its quality too.

What is plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 and how does it affect aging? Why is there a difference between chronological age and biological age? What can we learn from communities and locations that have longevity?

In this episode, I’m joined by the chairman of the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University, and leader of the Potocsnak Longevity Institute, Dr. Douglas Vaughan. He talks about the strides we’ve made in understanding biological age and what we can do about it.

Things You’ll Learn In This Episode

-The biggest driver of biological age

People’s biological age can be higher or lower than their stated chronological age. What is plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and how does it impact this?

    -How to slow aging

Every choice we make either ages us faster or it slows down the aging process. How do we make choices that support longevity?

    -A convergence of scientific strides

We’re in the golden age of understanding biological aging. What strides have been made to deepen our knowledge and discover interventions?

    Guest Bio

Dr. Douglas E. Vaughan, is chairman of the Department of Medicine and the Irving S. Cutter Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and has been elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. In 2018, Dr. Vaughan led a study that reported the first genetic variation that appears to protect against multiple aspects of biological aging in humans in an extended kindred of Old Order Amish living in the vicinity of Berne, Indiana.

Dr. Vaughan now leads the recently launched Potocsnak Longevity Institute, bringing together scientists and experts across many disciplines to study those populations that seem resistant to negative consequences of aging with a goal of discovering what makes them unique. With a deeper understanding of how aging works, the institute aims to expand the healthspan for all people with future therapies and lifestyle interventions.
