In this episode we bring you a recording of the ‘Meet the Candidates’ event that just took place on the evening of Saturday 30th September.
The evening was hosted by St Peter’s Anglican Church where the reverend Petra Zaleski is the vicar.
Candidates Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan (Labour), Greg Fleming (National), Dr Sapna Samant (Green), and Margo Onishchenko (ACT) joined MC Xavier Walsh.
Another registered candidate, Eric Chuah (Rock the Vote NZ/Freedoms NZ), also was given time during the Q&A segment.

Margo Onishchenko tells Tim McCready about migrating from Russia as a young woman, and her journey to standing as the ACT Party candiate for Maungakiekie.
Once Margo turned 18 she followed her older sister to New Zealand. She trained at Unitec and now works as a civil engineer.
The contrast between Margo's country of birth and her country of choice has been a significant factor in her decision to enter politics.

Dr Sapna Samant tells Tim McCready about her career in medicine and film-making and the Green Party's plan to address the increased rates of crime as well as tackling the wealth gap.
After qualifying and practicing as a doctor in India, Sapna migrated to Aotearoa in 2001. She worked and volunteered in various capacities for years before making the call to re-train and re-qualify as a doctor under the New Zealand system.
It was Sapna's passion for activism, particularly against the Hindu-fascist ideology, that has led her to stand for parliament.

Greg Fleming tells Tim McCready about his career in the charitable sector and his vision for a safer Maungakiekie electorate with thriving schools and businesses.
After training as an accountant and dabbling in a few small business ventures, Greg moved into the not-for-profit space where his passion for the institutions of civil society blosomed.
He's been CEO of Maxim Institute and Parenting Place as well as the instigator and trustee of a raft of other organisations.

Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan tells Tim McCready about her track record in parliament, and what she loves about Onehunga and the wider Maungakiekie electorate.
Priyanca was elected to parliament on the Labour Party list in 2017 and won the Maungakiekie electorate seat in 2020.
Her role as an electorate MP has coincided with being named a cabinet minister, and she currently holds a number of portfolios including Community and Voluntary Sector, and Disability Issues.

Josephine Bartley is the current Councillor for Maungakiekie-Tāmaki, and Denise Lee was formerly the local MP for the Maungakiekie electorate.

The Onehunga Business Association invited local leaders in business to a live panel discussion at the Factory Theatre on Monday 3rd April 2023.
Tim McCready led a broad-rainging and insightful discussion with councillors Desley Simpson, Josephine Bartley, and Julie Fairey.
Each councillor spoke frankly about the challenges Auckland faces, discussed the draft budget, and gave listeners an inside perspective on the recent floods.

Craig Lord is standing for Auckland's Mayor as an independent.
After 16 years in engineering, Craig moved into freelance media. He also works as an MC and Marriage Celebrant.
Craig and his wife have been married for 26 years and have two grown children.

Standing for Auckland's Mayor as an independent, he has the backing of both the Labour Party and the Green Party.

Stuart is a father of four and grandfather of five.

Looking to replace our incumbent Local Board members in this election are three women who make up the City Vision ticket; Dianna Fuka, Chhaya Rana and Danika Revell.
Dianna Fuka is a Tongan grandmother who is a church and union leader.
Chhaya Rana works as a registered nurse, and is a mother of three grown children.
Danika Revell is a mother to two young ones and is CEO and founder of The Period Place.

In the blue corner, standing for ward Councillor as the C&R (Communities & Residents) candidate we have Troy Elliott.
Troy has a business background in the telecommunications and fitness industries, as well as experience as an elected representative.
He currently serves as deputy chair of the Ōrākei Local Board.

We're kicking off our candidate interviews with our incumbent ward Councillor, Josephine Bartley.
Before getting into politics, Josephine was a lawyer. She was elected to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board and re-elected in 2013, and again in 2016.
Upon her election as councillor, Josephine became the first Pasifika woman elected to Auckland Council.
