Professor Rob Dwyer-Joyce did his PhD in Tribology in 1993.After a short stint at British gas Rob joined the University of Sheffield in 1994 as a lecturer. Whilst at Sheffield University he spent 6 years as head of the department. His research expertise is in industrial wear and lubrication problems, and the development of metrology tools for tribology.
Rob pioneered the use of ultrasound measurements in tribology.
We talk about Rob’s life as an academic and department head at Sheffield University, along with his most recent research work on wind turbine bearings and internal combustion engine journal bearings.

Alexander is a PhD student in the Tribology Group at Imperial College London. He graduated with a first-class Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2020, with a masters thesis on saxophone keywork ergonomics. Alexander's research focuses on optimising efficiency and reliability in electric vehicle gearboxes. His experimental work spans gearbox efficiency testing, measurement of EHD traction and film thickness at high speeds, and lubricant qualification test methods for scuffing and micropitting.

Maruti Sakhamuri did his PhD in Tribology at the University of Southampton, where he studied the running in phenomenon of bearing steels. Maruti has recently moved into investment banking and works at the University Superannuation Scheme (USS) as an Investment Risk Analyst.

Dr Matthew Smeeth is the Technical Manager at PCS Instruments. Matt did a PhD in Tribology, studying the EHD film thickness of viscosity index improvers. Matt joined PCS Instruments in 2000, where he has been at the forefront of tribology instrument development for over 20 years.
