  • According to a 2023 survey*, ONLY 40% of physicians currently recommend their profession. How can we boost that to 80% or 90%?

In my interview with Dr. Antonio J. Webb, MD, a deeply passionate Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, I explored crucial advice for aspiring medical professionals. Here's what he shared:

    1. **Insurance headaches are real.** Streamlining authorizations and improving reimbursements could be game-changers.2. **Burnout is killing passion.** We need to address work-life balance ASAP.3. **Administrative overload is suffocating care.** It's time to cut the red tape and let doctors be doctors.4. **Private practices are struggling.** Supporting them means supporting physician independence and job satisfaction.

Dr. Webb shared profound insights on the importance of passion, balance, and open-mindedness in choosing a medical specialty. He emphasized that finding something you love to do is essential for long-term fulfillment. His passion for spine and orthopedic surgery illustrates how a deep connection to your work can drive satisfaction and success.

Dr. Webb also addressed the common misconception that surgeons cannot have a balanced lifestyle. By being in private practice, he can tailor his schedule to fit his personal needs, demonstrating that a healthy work-life balance is achievable even in demanding fields.

Furthermore, Dr. Webb advised against letting a single negative experience during a rotation define one's perception of a specialty. He encouraged looking at the bigger picture and understanding that specific circumstances often shape individual experiences.

Lastly, he highlighted the importance of keeping an open mind when exploring different specialties. Dr. Webb believes that the right choice will eventually resonate with each individual, underscoring the need for exploration and flexibility.

Developing resilience can help us overcome almost any challenge. I had an unbelievably incredible discussion on Wellness at the Speed of Light with Dr. Antonio J. Webb, MD, a San Antonio-based orthopedic surgeon and military veteran. This was nothing short of a Masterclass on resiliency and the ability to fight through incredible struggles growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana, with many family members addicted to drugs and in prison. Dr. Webb then had an incredible career in the military, where he was subjected to over 100 mortar attacks while caring for patients.

I could not be more excited about the release of this podcast, which will air at the end of the week. Here is a small sample from our discussion where Dr. Webb talks about the incredibly difficult environment he grew up in and how he was able to overcome those challenges.

The bottom line? Happy doctors = better healthcare for all of us.

I love being a physician, and it was incredible speaking with someone who is so passionate about the profession, but change is desperately needed to reignite the love of medicine for the many who have lost their fervor.

*Survey was from Physicians Foundation based on responses from 2,114 physicians, residents, and medical students polled between June 8 and June 28, 2023. It reported that 60% were suffering burnout and 36% knew another physician who had contemplated suicide.

    What do you think?
