  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversation.

In this epsiode I have an enriching conversation with Lucy Mayes and Ingrid Gaiotto.

Lucy: A mother with two young adult children who is transitioning into a new phase of life. She has a background in law but left her law career due to a values disconnect and pursued a career in workplace wellbeing, with a particular focus on healthcare. Lucy has also delved into spiritual personal development work and aims to share her knowledge and experience as she gains more freedom.

Ingrid: With a background in Italian heritage and a passion for the arts, hospitality, and travel, has embarked on various ventures, including running a cafe and now a tour operations company. She maintains a deep connection to her Italian roots and channels her skills and passions into creating businesses aligned with her values.

Lucy and Ingrid have joined forces for this special episode to discuss their shared passion for personal development, authenticity, and making a positive impact in the world. They also excitedly reveal an upcoming Italy retreat that they are partnering on, promising a transformative and enriching experience for participants.

In this conversation we explored the following themes:

Personal Development and Authenticity: Lucy and Ingrid share pivotal moments in their lives that have shaped their perspectives and actions. They highlight the importance of pursuing desires and leveraging opportunities to live authentically.

Impact of Fear: The conversation delves into the impact of fear on one's actions and choices, emphasizing the need to overcome it with courageous action to lead a fulfilling life.

    Closing the Gap:
The conversation explores the challenge of bridging the gap between ideal values and real-life actions. Both guests highlight the importance of authenticity and generosity and advocate for a balanced approach between rational and intuitive thinking.

    Balancing Thinking Styles:
Lucy discusses the balance between the right and left sides of human thinking and the need to find a bridge between them. She mentions the over-quantification of life in modern society and how genuine quality often emerges from unmeasurable experiences.

    Definition of Success:
The episode concludes with a focus on the definition of success, featuring a quote from Maya Angelou about self-liking and authenticity in one's actions.

    Enough is enough:
The conversation ends with a reference to Lucy's recent TED Talk, where she introduces the concept of taking oneself and others by the hand and boldly declaring "enough is enough."
This concept challenges the prevailing cultural narrative that constantly tells individuals they are not enough, urging a shift toward authenticity and self-acceptance.

LISTEN NOW to explore the rich insights shared by Lucy and Ingrid, and discover how their experiences and wisdom can inspire you to live authentically and aligned with your values.

    Lucy's Insights:
    - Lucy discusses the concept of purpose, noting how it has been commercialized and can create a constant sense of striving and inadequacy.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living Conversation episode 69 with guest Nathalie Martinek.

Nathalie is an ex-systems biology and cancer researcher turned Narcissism Hacker, consultant and independent medical culture researcher. As a highly attuned observer Nathalie became acutely alive to the fact that toxic behaviours metastasise, just like the tumours she once studied. As a global consultant for leaders, investors and executives in healthcare, tech and related industries, she specialises in helping individuals and teams navigate professional relationships that feature narcissistic behaviours. Her clients develop skills and strategies to successfully negotiate with corporate psychopaths and prevent psychological, financial or reputational harm.

Many women struggle or have struggled with aggression and bullying by other women. Actually stats show that of the bullying cases lead by women in the workplace, 80% of those cases are woman on woman.

In this episode we explore lateral ( women on women) aggression & bullying in the workplace. What is it? How it plays out? Reasons it happens? How to recognise it’s happening? Why some women ( and men) deny it’s existence, why it even matters? and whether we can stop it, if so how?

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living Conversation episode 68 with special guest Amy Loughren (the real nurse behind the Netflix movie 'The GoodNurse'.)

Amy worked for many years as an overloaded trauma/ICU/ER nurse but in 2003 her life path changed. In this very authentic, open conversation Amy shares her story of unknowingly befriending a serial killer - Charles Cullen in 2001 and her intense journey in helping detectives put him in jail. Amy generously took me through the deep layers of her personal quest in self-discovery this very unique experience took her on.

The conversation was deep and full of thought provoking insights. We talked about friendship, family, trauma, betrayal, denial, boundaries, compassion, accountability, aligning to values, a bigger purpose, breaking intergenerational healing, and more.

There were tangents and that uncovered lots of takeaways.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living Conversations episode 67 with guest Jimi Hunt.

(N.B - we experienced a couple of connection issues that affected the sound quality in parts but it's mostly fine)

Talking about Mental health and mental illness is commonplace these days. They are on the agenda in schools, workplaces, government organisations, community groups, media, and across all social media networks. This is a great step forward in mental health awareness and de-stigmatising mental illness but I wonder how much real-life courageous action people are taking to live a happier, more meaningful, and connected life.

My guest today - Jimi Hunt is someone who takes courageous and some may even say outrageous action to live his best life and in turn has made it his mission to help people be happier and healthier, by making himself happier and healthier, he refers to it as Moving people up the Mental fitness continuum to become mentally fitter.

Jimi is known for his Guinness World Record for building the world's longest waterslide and for flowing down the longest river in New Zealand on a lilo.

    In the episode we discussed:

-The difference between mental health and mental fitness

-Why the mental health stats are as they are

-The role society plays in our mental health and the mental illness epidemic

-Where the focus needs to be to change the stats

-The mental fitness continuum and some simple daily steps to move up it

-The importance of radical ownership and personal responsibility

-The role connection plays in mental health and mental fitness

-The importance of groups or accountability partners in order to improve mental wellbeing

-How do we get and stay motivated?

-The importance of role modeling as a way to teach

-The effectiveness of a peer-to-peer model in creating a ripple effect

There were so many great takeaways from this episode. Here are five:

    1. There's no point in collecting a bunch of great information if we don't do anything with it
    2. Consistency is key - take small steps each day
    3. The greater the inequity in society the higher the rate of mental illness
    4. Content and hang out with people who have done the thing you want to do
    5. The greatest motivator is progress

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversations episode 66.

“You can't heal in a workplace, situation or institution that continues to harm you.“ - Nathalie Martinek

With this in mind in this episode, we are going to take a deep dive into burnout and bring awareness to things that contribute to workplace toxicity that rarely get talked about in workplace wellbeing conversations. What it looks like, sounds like, feels like, as well as the wellness initiatives that try to cover up the core systemic problems. There’s much more to the burnout conversation than needs to be addressed and we do our best to highlight some in this episode.

My guest, Nathalie Martinek is a relationship coach and consultant for leaders and executives in healthcare and related industries, globally.
She helps leaders and executives navigate professional and personal relationships with narcissistic people using strategic communication and relational skills while managing risks to their reputation and career progression.

The episode begins by defining burnout in two different ways and goes on to get more specific with the second, less commonly talked about definition.

In this episode, we do not shy away from anything and exposure how buzzwords are often thrown around without considering their true meaning and are often used to create new industries.

We look at imposter syndrome versus forced assimilation, moral distress/injury, and how some wellness initiatives such as resilience programs are used to gaslight employees and avoid addressing broken dehumanising systems.

This episode is jam packed with thought-provoking insights.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversations episode 65.

With some much change over the last few years, do you feel like your mojo has gone on holiday without you - you know, that magical feeling that comes from being joyful and feeling connected, from living with purpose and meaning and having a creative flow?

In this episode guest, an authority on creativity, culture, and the human future of work,
Mykel Dixon, highlights that your creative, playful spark always resides within you, waiting for you to reconnect with it so you can thrive both personally and professionally.

Creativity helps inspire a culture of connection, growth, and employee engagement. It's time to reimagine leadership. In this conversation, I chat with Mykel about what keeps people and organisations from fully embracing a new more creative, and human-centred way of leading and why it matters.

We also explore the metaphoric relationship and life dualities between creative arts (in Mykel's case, as a Jazz musician) and business success. We discuss character traits and transferrable skills learned through creative practice that enhance courage, confidence, connection, and compassion.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversations episode 64

The terms - future of work, modern leadership, gender equality, inclusion, humanising workplaces, and employee wellbeing, are all commonplace at the moment, so today I want to dive into a somewhat taboo subject that’s often ignored as part of these topical conversations and traditionally regarded as a medical or personal matter for women and their families only - MENOPAUSE.

Menopause - peri and post, often intersects with a significant time in a woman's career, a time when women are most likely to be occupying top leadership roles. Research shows that the effects of menopause are far more extensive than hot flushes and can include symptoms of anxiety, ‘brain fog, insomnia, exhaustion, joint pain, and heart palpitations and women are suffering in silence out of fear and shame.

Women in leadership roles are on the rise and to maintain their valuable contributions, I believe we need to be more open about what menopause is and how it affects both individuals and organizations.

So to take a dive deep into this topic, I invited Melissa MacGowan as my guest for this Wellthy Living conversation. Melissa is a veteran c-suite executive, leadership coach, menopause educator, and advocate. She has held numerous Human Resources leadership roles around the globe, coaching thousands of people to perform at peak minus burnout.

She founded Meno Collective after she quit her corporate career to follow her passion to educate and empower women and workplaces. to view menopause as a wellbeing, commercial and cultural workplace opportunity.

Some of the things we covered in this conversation include:

    - Symptoms of menopause - peri and post
    - Menopause and gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace I
    - The need for psychologically safe and supportive workplaces
    - Examples of what women are experiencing in workplaces
    - Benefits of speaking up
    - How menopause impacts all regardless of gender

    and more.

I hope this episode gives you more insights into this taboo topic and that workplaces start to consider how they can begin to create more open communication and psychological safety at work, so women can meet their wellbeing needs, without feeling fear or shame.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living Conversations episode 63. I have pulled this episode from a recording I did a few years ago, as it's a topic that constantly holds relevance and personally, I think was a great conversation worth listening to.

I chat with “Fatigue Professor” John Toomey to dive deeper into the topic of FATIGUE PREVENTION, what causes it, the implications, impact if not addressed, and ways it can be prevented or at least reduced.

Fatigue is a multi-faceted challenge and requires understanding and knowledge to ensure that it can be kept at bay, or even eliminated.

We will discuss ways to achieve high performance without stepping too far across the fatigue line.

This is not a conversation that focuses just on sleep issues. We will chat about hydration, oxygenation, pH Balance, food, fitness, life purpose, mental health, mindset, and more.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living Conversations episode 62.

In this episode, I have a deep and meaningful conversation with Dr. Jimi Wollumbin.
Jimi is a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine with a background in philosophy and eastern religion and has been described as a philosopher of medicine.

The conversation is definitely rooted in philosophy, with ancient myths woven in, as we discussed the cracked lenses in which humans move through the world, the polarisation of modern culture, and the power of storytelling, connection, curiosity, humility, and wonder in healing the divide and bringing us back to whole-person wellbeing.

Some of the things we talked about:

*The true meaning of the word ‘science’ and how the term ‘follow the science’ is driving a particular narrative and societal culture

*The cult of scientism that has emerged - science functioning as a religion

*Integrating the art and science in medicine

*Fragmentation in the modern world and how our cracked lens give us a perspective that things are split instead of whole

*The polarity between fact and myth and who’s facts are right!

*Use of facts to support our own mythic narrative - cherry-picking facts

*The place for facts play in the overall narrative

*The need for connection to self - really knowing yourself for transformation to take place

*Being open to holding narratives gently for wholeness and renovating our myths/stories

    *Dancing with conflict
    -Integrating different perspectives/narratives
    -Disagreeing gracefully
-The conflicting perspectives within - the stories we tell ourselves
-Celebrating our shadow parts and embracing our own internal contradictions

*Fractures in the world of medicine - Split between orthodox and alternative medicine
-Wellness industry - has it become a virus onto itself, causing further separation and questionable credibility
-The importance of self-mastery in medicine for a whole and integrated approach

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living Conversations episode 61.

In this casual conversation I am talking to Michael Ellis about a new era in workplace culture. Michael designs and delivers creative culture strategies for companies that want to change the world of work, for good.

And as people begin to trickle back into communal work spaces, there’s a real opportunity to do this in a more considered and aligned way. As Michael’s work is based on a foundation of self awareness and empathy, two qualities that I strongly believe enhance connection and in turn sustainable success, it was good opportunity to bring him on the show and discuss insights and inspire action as we begin to create a new normal.

The conversation flowed in many directions covering everything from the way we communicate, to curiosity, compassion, relinquishing control, support, patience, the power of vulnerability, shame and more.

We loved to know what your biggest insights are from this conversation. Please a comment and let us know.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversations EP 59.

2020/21 has seen people spend more time in their homes than ever before. So in this episode, I chat with Cecilia Macaulay about creating calm, beautiful and usable spaces in the home, using a blend of permaculture design, zen living and Japanese culture - or in Cecilia's words - to live lightly and delightly.

Cecilia has 28 years of experience in permaculture design, 27 of which are in Japan. She worked on the design of a self-maintaining garden for Sir Richard Branson’s Caribbean island. She was engaged as a consultant for Taronga Zoo’s 10-year plan. Cecilia is the co-author 'Visual Language for Global Communication', together with the legendary user interface designer Aaron Marcus and has spoken at high-profile events such as Vivid Ideas Sydney.

In this episode, Cecilia starts by telling us what permaculture design is and then shares the lessons she gained from studying permaculture and how it can be applied to create home spaces that are both beautiful and usable.

She shares how her method is different from a modern-day declutter professional and how she takes the overwhelm out of the process.

I had Cecilia walk me through some of her quirky and practical tips for the kitchen, study and garden space. She also shared traps that we waste energy on so we can create an environment that provides motivation, direction and freedom.

Cecilia's practices are very aligned with my beliefs around the importance of self knowledge and working with our unique natural flow to design spaces in ways that feels good for each individual.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversations EP.58

With so many people succumbing to anxiety and fear at the moment, many are feeling hopeless and finding it hard to feel optimistic. But we all know we need to focus on hope and optimism for the future wellbeing of ourselves, the younger generations and the planet.

So to promote solutions that focus on fun, make sense of life and taming our toxic load so we can master our mind and body and create a culture of wellness, I’m joined by Special Guest, Dr Marc Cohen.

Dr Marc is a medical doctor, university professor, author, poet, entrepreneur, wellness trailblazer and perpetual student.

In this episode Marc shares his passion for holistic medicine and wellness and how he went from studying western medicine to now focus more on integrative medicine and health promotion.

Marc dives into his passion topic- 'water' and why he thinks its the solution to realising worldwide wellness. We discussed types of water, science of water, impacts of toxins in our water and impacts of bathing in toxic water.

We went on to discuss simple ways to boost our immune system and reduce anxiety, where Marc shares his "10 hacks to relax" - helping your body go from sympathetic-dominant ‘fight and flight’ mode, to parasympathetic-dominant ‘rest and digest’ mode. These actions can be done anywhere, or anytime you feel anxious, scared, upset or in pain and they will help you relax your body and calm your mind.

The 10 Hacks to Relax are:
    1.Touch all your fingers
    2.Wiggle your toes
    3.Soften your stomach
    4.Breathe through your nose
    5.Sigh
    6.Smile
    7.Swallow
    8.Sing
    9.Flutter your eyelids
    10.Focus within

Marc then proceeded to share talk about another passion of his that seems to be gaining popularity and proving to have both physiological and psychological benefits -
A practice where instead of trying to get rid of stress you make it your friend - 'Extreme wellness'.

He shared what extreme wellness is and how it helps to build resilience and retrain your nervous system. He shared a fun daily practice that he calls "the hockey pokey shower dance' to help people begin their journey into extreme wellness.

Throughout the episode Dr Marc shared additional info and tips to reduce anxiety and thrive in your life.

Since wellness can be just as contagious as illness, maybe together we can contribute to wellness pandemic that will help us become positively well and realise worldwide wellness.

    Now over to you:
Please leave a comment and let us know your biggest takeaway from this conversation.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversations episode 56.
I’m Lisa, your host and the founder of Wellthy Living.
It is here that I connect with a variety of people to have inspiring and insightful conversations to help you to live a meaningful, connected and well life both personally & professionally.

In this episode, the focus is on the workplace and how it is one of the key pillars of creating connection for many people.

In 2020 we saw a dramatic change in the way people work, with most being forced to work from home. In Australia, people are slowly coming back to the workplace and I’m wondering whether this last year has changed the future landscape of workplaces and spaces.

I chat with the founder and CEO of Australia’s largest privately-owned co-working operator, Hub Australia - Brad Krauskopf to delve into this topic and explore the impact that workspace has on connection, leadership and the overall wellbeing of a business and its people.

Brad is a national leader in the co-working space, founding Hub in 2011, with a vision to develop a national network of workspaces to help businesses and their teams love where they work.

In this conversation, we cover a lot, including:

-What a coworking space is, how the concept began, the workplace set up and who it currently caters for?

-Whether working from home poses a threat to personal wellbeing and organisational performance?

-The way forward for working arrangements - Hybrid work arrangements - Flexible workplace model

-The shift in the power balance between employer and employee and the impact of this

    - A shift in leadership style

-A need for the revision of a company's mission, vision and values as times change

-The need for more personal development programs that focus on emotional intelligence as we see a change of working arrangements

-Collaborative personal growth and wellbeing programs in co-working spaces

-Gender equality and addressing the needs of women, especially mothers

-If working from anywhere allows for a greater diversity of staff

-The need to consider environmental impact and sustainability

    - The importance of being an Employer of Choice to attract good talent

-Whether this new way of working affects the employee's connection to their companies mission, vision and values.

I hope you enjoy this jam-packed episode.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversations episode 55.
I’m Lisa, your host and the founder of Wellthy Living.
It is here that I connect with a variety of people to have inspiring and insightful conversations to help you to live a meaningful, connected and well life both personally & professionally.

I love a good story, especially ones from women who challenge ideas and societal norms, showcase diversity, overcome judgment and shame, find beauty in the broken and redefine success to live their best life. And in this episode, I am chatting with a woman who has done and continues to do all of this.

My guest is a woman often referred in women's business circles as ‘the copyright queen” Jay Crisp Crow.

But we do give you tips on copyrighting, instead Jay shares with us about her life with an invisible illness and her achievement in successfully staying connected and living well despite her body being sick
or unwell.

    A little more about Jay:

In her old life, Jay juggled a family, a disability, and a communications job that sucked the juice from her bones. Then she had firm words with herself, found her voice, and took her own gig on the road. Through Crisp Copy, Jay writes blow-your-hair-back premium copy for brands, big and small, and teaches women in business how to write copy that sells through coaching, consulting, and courses.

She regularly presents in Perth and online on everything from Staying Away From Safe Copy to Disability and Business and Being Both Fat and Successful. She co-founded a social enterprise with her Queen Ruler daughter, Ella, and in 2019 launched her first podcast – So Crisp.

Some days she runs a business just as a middle-finger to everyone who said she couldn’t make a living writing or tells her she charges too much. ‹

Despite not talking about copywriting, I begin by weaving Jay's wordsmith magic, by asking her to define two words: Success and well.

I then ask her to delight you with her words -and paint a picture of her life pre-illness, living with the illness prior to starting her own business and lastly running a successful business on her own terms.

    We continue to discuss:

-Loss of identity to building a new identity?

    -Losing and rebuilding trust

-The importance of being connected to your internal power source for your wellbeing?

-Knowing your limits and asserting your boundaries lovingly

    and more.

This really is an inspirational episode.

  • Welcome to Wellthy Living conversations episode 54
I’m Lisa, your host and the founder of Wellthy Living.
It is here that I connect with a variety of people to have inspiring and insightful conversations to help you to live a meaningful, connected and well life both personally & professionally.

Our choices impact our work, health and relationships and today I am chatting with Jenny Cole to talk about the choices people make when it comes to helping others and discuss :

Why helping is not always helpful - how to avoid the "advice trap” and the relationship dynamics that often get played out.

    Guest intro:
Jenny is an executive coach, facilitator, educator and mother to Albert the spaniel, running two successful businesses, Positively Beaming and BEAM Consulting.

Jenny believes that the world is always ready for a little more joy and her focus is ensuring you find it and build it into your life.

Despite being a committed, excellent educator of 20 years and recognised national expert in the field of Special Education, she crashed and burned, walking out on the career she loved - an exhausted wreck.

Her nervous breakdown/spiritual awakening led her to study why and how people thrive and the simple things we can do each day to make it so.

    ———
Sometimes we think the best thing we can do for a person is to offer help and advice but this can have implications on both the helper and the person being helped.

It is also important to know that Jenny and I are both coaches and facilitators and not psychologists or counsellors so what we are bringing to the conversation is our own formal and informal learnings and lived experience ( with self or clients) in human behaviour. If you disagree with any of the content we share, that is ok and we welcome any feedback or contribution to the conversation. You can use the contact page on either of our websites, reach out on social media or leave a comment to further contribute to today's topic.

In the episode, we start by defining: helping, helpful, what contributes to advice giving and what is the advice trap.

    and go on to discuss:

    - Relational dynamics that contribute to people owning certain roles:
victim, persecutor or rescuer. - sometimes referred to as the dreaded drama triangle

Victim - perceived hurt or harmed
    Persecutor- doing the hurting
Rescuer- intervene to support victim -peacemaker ( completes loop)

    - Common reasons we step into the helper or the rescuer role:

    - Implications/signs and symptoms
    For the helper: (rescuer)
For the receiver ( or the victim)

    - How the rescuer can be more aware of the difference between their own needs and the other persons

    - A more mindful and empowering way to be supportive: How to you help without over helping? How do you support someone to help themselves?

    - Leading with curiosity

    - Detachment to outcome of other peoples choices - relinquishing the needs to feel responsible or have control over someone's outcome

    - Supporting with presence, process and communication

    - Self awareness tools and practice

    A question to ponder on:
Does helping enhance our connection with others or does it harm our connection?

Share your response to this in the comments section.
