"It's about your own personal battle scars," he said, "and for every individual those are different; some might be words or labels... it might be relationship scars. When I wrote this song, and when Lupe wrote his bits, we just really wanted it to be something that just inspired people to, sort of, confront those things, and also maybe try and work to think about burying and ripping up those labels; throwing them away."

Fred Ball and J. Angel originally wrote the tune in early 2014. Ball told the story of the song to GENIUS in a interview"J Angel and I made it in one day at Westlake studios in L.A. I had never worked with him before, and we just clicked immediately.

We wanted the song to be old school - a mix between Prince and Al Green. The time signature is 6/8ths - it has a timeless and soulful feel to it. We wanted it to have that juxtaposition of an old school soul feel with modern lyrics. That's why Amy Winehouse was never pastiche or retro even though her music has an old soul sound.
We didn't write the song with Rihanna in mind, but Jay Brown, my manager at Roc Nation, heard it and absolutely loved it. He sent it to Rihanna and she reacted similarly. That was nearly two years ago. It was the first song that was commissioned for ANTi." -

Max wrote this sultry slow jam with Nathaniel Motte and Liam O'Donnell in 2016. After recording it for his second album Hell's Kitchen Angel, he played the passionate love song to his then-girlfriend, Emily, to ask her to marry him; she accepted. Max said:

"I proposed to her singing the song where we had our first date. We always say because the song came from a place of love it will always stand for love whether someone is gay, straight, bisexual, or transgender. It started as our little wedding song and it's so beautiful that we get to share it with the world." -

"'You Are The Reason' started out as a song about something completely different than what it is now. It was originally written from a fragile place of anxiety and not knowing the cause of it, so the song started to become 'Without A Reason'. But as we carried on writing, we realized how every relationship has difficult times but you stick with it because the love you fundamentally feel for the other person overrides everything else."

"Stand By Me" was the name of a gospel hymn written by the Philadelphia minister Charles Albert Tindley in 1905. His hymn became popular in churches throughout the American South and was recorded by various gospel acts in the 1950s. The most popular adaptation was by The Staple Singers, who recorded it in 1955. It was this version that Ben E. King heard; he pushed The Drifters to record it, but the group's manager rejected it. After leaving The Drifters, King auditioned for the wildly successful songwriting/production team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, singing a few popular songs before doing what he had of "Stand By Me," which was just a few lines of lyrics with some humming to fill in the words. He agreed to collaborate on the song with Leiber and Stoller, who gave it a more contemporary sound and polished it into a hit. The bassline at the beginning was Stoller's idea. The song was credited as being written by Leiber, Stoller and King. Charles Albert Tindley, who composed the original hymn, was left off the composer credits as his work had been sufficiently transformed. This wasn't the first time Tindley was omitted from the credits of a song he originated.

I Like' was a record that was actually chosen by L.A. Reid himself," he explained. "It was a record that I hoped when people heard it for the first time, with me being gone for at least a small period of time over the past year, I wanted them to know exactly who it was when they heard it. I think it was definitely that record. When they heard it, it would be, 'OK, that's Jeremih. It sounds like Jeremih; it sounds like something he would do.' So that was the hope for that record and so far, so good."

It was based on the fiddle player in Beoga, Niamh [Dunne]. She's married to an Irishman, a friend of mine. I had the band in my house for an extra day so I was like, 'what can I write about? She plays the fiddle in an Irish band... right, cool, let's write a song about that.' She inspired the first line but the rest of the song isn't about anyone, I just made up a story."

Sam Hunt had had the idea for the song stored away for some time. "I try to think of titles or lines that'll cross my mind and I'll put 'em in my phone, and this was one that I wanted to write for a while – the title 'Body Like a Back Road' – or use it as a lyric, do something with it," the Georgia native recalled. "I didn't have a melody, but one night this melody got stuck in my head and the phrase 'Body Like a Back Road' sang perfectly to it and the chorus came out pretty quick." Having come up a melody that fitted the title, Hunt started working on the song with producer Zach Crowell and a couple of writing buddies Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally in November of 2016. The quartet penned the bulk of the tune during a trip to Charleston, where they were hoping to work without the distractions of being in Nashville. Hunt recalled "I wanted to write it because I thought it was a fun song, but I didn't know for sure if I wanted to put it out. I didn't want it to come across as objectifying women or be too, to lack depth and just, I don't know. So, anyway, I had some concerns, but I tried to make it fun to offset any risks of those things happening, which made writing it fun, and I think that came across in the lyric and in the way we recorded it and everything else. When we finally finished it, it finally hit me as 'Ok. Wait a minute. Maybe I underestimated the potential of this song. I think this could be a fun song and it will connect with folks.' So, at that point, I was excited to put it out and fortunately folks have enjoyed it."

The song finds Lauv reflecting on the first time that he'd fallen truly in love. He now hopes to find that experience again. "It's kind of just like that feeling of everything else is crazy in my life and I don't really know what the f--k I'm doing, but whatever we have going on is dope," Lauv told Genuis. "I find now, I wake up every day and I'm on my phone, or I'll wake up in the middle of the night and I'm on my phone. It's sad. The first thing I do is do that. It's so nice when you're with somebody and you can just lay there and watch them wake up, or whatever it is."

Rodrigo wrote the raw lyrics after breaking up with her boyfriend. The two used to talk about how excited they'd be when she passed her driving test and could drive to his home. Now she is aimlessly riding through the LA suburbs with her newly christened "driver's license," longing for her ex. "When I came up with 'drivers license,' I was going through a heartbreak that was so confusing to me, so multifaceted," Rodrigo explained. "Putting all those feelings into a song made everything seem so much simpler and clearer - and at the end of the day, I think that's really the whole purpose of songwriting. There's nothing like sitting at the piano in my bedroom and writing a really sad song.
