In August 2005, a woman disappeared just days before she was supposed to testify against her boyfriend, a corrections officer accused of sexually abusing minors. For years, her family says she was treated like a fugitive instead of a missing person. But when we looked deeper, we found a witness who has never spoken publicly before — and a sighting from the night she vanished that could change the way this case has been understood for more than twenty years.

On vuosi 2005. Elokuun puolivälissä nimekäs yritysjohtaja, 54-vuotias Markku Franssila, rekisteröi Lahden maistraatissa parisuhteen. Kolmen kuukauden kuluttua Franssilan puoliso marssii apteekkiin ja poistuu mukanaan paketti Abalgin-nimistä särkylääkettä. Seuraavana päivänä Markku Franssila kuolee kesähuvilallaan Heinolan Vierumäellä. Rikosta aletaan epäillä vasta kuukausien kuluttua. Kun poliisi tammikuussa 2006 ottaa Franssilan puolison kiinni murhasta epäiltynä, hänen historiansa alkaa herättää kysymyksiä. Aikaan ennen Franssilan murhaa näyttää liittyvän kaksi muuta hämärää kuolemaa. Keskusrikospoliisi alkaa tutkia kolmea surmaa miltei vuosikymmenen ajalta.

Rikosseuraamuslaitoksen tilastojen mukaan suomalaisten elinkautisvankien syyllistyminen uudelleen vakaviin rikoksiin on ollut huomattavasti vähäisempää kuin väkivaltarikollisten keskimäärin. Voidaanko ajatella, että pidempi vankila-aika tosiaan auttaa uusintarikollisuuden torjunnassa? Eikö looginen jatkoajatus sitten voisi olla, että myös väkivaltarikosten pidemmät tuomiot voisivat auttaa vähentämään uusintarikollisuutta? Muun muassa näihin kysymyksiin uusimmassa jaksossa vastaa kriminologi Matti Näsi Helsingin yliopistosta.

Nuorten miesten porukka murtautui Tampereen Nekalassa kerrostaloasuntoon, joka valikoitui kohteeksi umpimähkään. Nelikon humalaisesta ja kidutukseen asti taipuvasta väkivallasta jäi jälkeen kahden heille entuudestaan tuntemattoman uhrin ruumiit sekä tuleen sytytetty asunto.

Tiistai-iltapäivänä hätäkeskukseen tulee puhelu. ”Asunnossani on kaksi naista kuolleena”, nuoren miehen ääni sanoo puhelimeen. Soittaja ei puhu olinpaikastaan, rikoksesta tai osallisuudestaan mitään. Kun poliisipartio saapuu asunnolle, on vastassa kolme päivää aiemmin kuolleiden naisten ruumiit.
