“My sheep hear my voice...” John 10:27-28 ESV

    DEVOTIONAL
    ------
When I figured out that prayer didn’t have to be laborious but was merely a conversation, I began to pray in a whole new way. I started to discover that talking to God was essential, but listening to the voice of my Creator was even more grounding and transformative. I found that often He had much to tell me that brought a new perspective, a clearer identity, practical solutions, and peace. I began to experience prayer as more of an exhale and refill than a form of discipline with a timer and gritted teeth. My main job was to quiet myself and listen.

In our culture today, we are bombarded with emails, texts, instagrams, push notifications, etc. There is so much noise. There is so much talking “AT” us. But the noise often hides the real desire we have as human beings - to know and be known. Sometimes we don’t even remember this is our core need.

But this is our design - to be known and to know others in return. The first fruit of the curse was hiding and God having to come after us asking, “Where are you?”

God invites us today to both talk to him AND listen to him. It’s not like our technology. We aren’t posting and giving thumbs up. He isn’t sending push notifications and going back to his life. We are called into relationship. He wants to listen to our needs and concerns and joys and fears. He wants to tell us his heart and secrets. He wants to whisper words of encouragement and an overcoming perspective. He wants to remind us that He loves us and will never leave us. He doesn’t want to talk AT us, he wants to be WITH us. Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:3 ESV.

    REFLECTION
    ------
How does it make you feel knowing that God wants to talk with you? How does it change your perspective on prayer knowing that your loving Father always has time for you and always has loving and encouraging things to say to you?

    PRAYER
    ------
Jesus, thank you for your promise that I hear your voice. I ask you to awaken and arrest my heart to hear you when you speak to me.

  • Rwanda forms new, multi-ethnic government in wake of slaughter. When the Dutch colonized Rwanda in 1916, they favoured the minority Tutsis over the majority Hutus, giving the Tutsis better jobs and educational opportunities. This created such resentment among the Hutus that when the Dutch granted Rwanda independence in 1962, they seized control of the government and blamed all the country’s problems on the Tutsis. On April 6, 1994, Rwanda’s Hutu president, Juvenal Habyarimana, was killed along with Burundi’s president when their plane was shot down. The presidential guard blamed the Tutsis and called for Hutus to take revenge. Insurgents killed Opposition politicians, including moderate Hutus. The UN withdrew its troops after 10 of its soldiers were killed. Within 100 days, 800,000 Rwandans, mostly Tutsis, had been slaughtered; another two million had fled the country. When aid workers and UN soldiers returned, the country formed a multi-ethnic transitional government on July 19, 1994. The new Hutu president, Pasteur Bizimungu, and Tutsi vice president, Major-General Paul Kagame, called for calm. It was years before the UN acknowledged that its untimely withdrawal had played a role in allowing the massacre.

  • Bishop T.D. Jakes was not born with “Bishop” in his name. He’s a preacher. The first one on my podcast. But he’s ALSO an entrepreneur (His business is his church and he has an entertainment company called TDJ enterprises). Every week, Bishop T.D. Jakes gives sermons to tens of thousands of people on multiple platforms (online and off). And people watch from all over the country. So I asked him about that (building an audience, find what you love, pursuing it, etc.) And I asked about his business. He gave me so much knowledge about entrepreneurship. And his most recent book, “Soar!: Build Your Vision From the Ground Up” says how anyone (from beginner to expert) can adopt his principles. We packed so much valuable information into the hour we were together. Everything from reinventing the choices we make to “purpose over profit” to why failure is priceless.

  • One of my passions right now is bringing the generations together.  There is a considerable gap, made even wider by the illusion of being “connected” via social media when we are not truly reaching out to each other.  Making an effort to genuinely connect will empower our younger generation to face the societal challenges of today with the wisdom of those who fought the great fight before them.
In this episode, I speak with my friend and spiritual father, Bishop Sherman Watkins. Bishop Watkins was a critical influence in my life upon the premature death of my Dad when I was 16. His watchful eye and consistent tutelage during those formative years were the catalyst through which I escaped being a statistic too often seen in underserved communities. His marriage of 43 years inspired me as a husband and gave me the perseverance needed in rearing my children. Our intergenerational experiences have helped many today to identify voids and fill them when found.
Mentorship is important and can be the deciding factor between a young person achieving greatness and feeling lost without purpose.
