The October 2024 podcast features Pharmacist and Professor emeritus, Dr. Jay Mirtallo from the Ohio State University and a Clinical Practice Specialist for ASPEN. Dr. Mirtallo shares the results of an influential patient-based survey of consumers on parenteral nutrition. He highlights PN access issues from the patient perspective ranging from product shortages to financial burdens and uniquely identifies unconsidered areas for improvement in the medical system to improve patient safety. He comments on action steps for all nutrition support clinicians including an emphasis on legislation to pass the medical nutrition therapy act allowing reimbursement for the role of the registered dietitian.

This spotlight is on Dr. Patricia Byers, MD, FACS. She is a Professor and Section Chief in Surgical Nutrition and Metabolic Surgery at the Ryder Trauma Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL.
Dr. Byers became interested in nutrition while working in trauma and critical care, where she saw the impact of nutrition support on this patient population. She credits her career development to mentors like Drs. Stanley Dudrick, Bruce Bistrian, and Miguel Echenique.
Dr. Byers also discusses the importance of a multidisciplinary team in the care of patients receiving nutrition support, and how all members of the team are able to learn and grow from each other. She highlights the minimal nutrition training that surgical residents receive and yet surgical patients can benefit the most from nutrition support. In her institution, she makes sure that her surgical residents are exposed to their nutrition support team and gain experience in writing orders for TPN.
Dr. Byers is an active member of ASPEN and contributes to various committees, including the Physician Engagement Committee. She encourages others to get involved in ASPEN to promote their careers in nutrition.

This podcast features Dr. Jamie Bering, MD, Senior Associate Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Dr. Bering first became interested in nutrition as a GI fellow after she realized her specific interest in placing PEG tubes and working with those patients on their nutrition and hydration management post-procedure. She describes the importance that mentorship played in her career advancement and specialty in nutrition. She has been fortunate enough to have completed her training in the same institution, now working alongside her mentors.
Dr. Bering describes gaps in the field of nutrition specific to conditions where the role of nutrition support has not yet been well defined. She is interested in researching these areas and developing an algorithm to best approach these patients and determine how nutrition support might improve their overall outcomes.
Dr. Bering is a member of the Physician Engagement Committee and describes how her committee involvement and ASPEN membership overall has led to numerous advancement opportunities in her career. She also highlights various fellowship programs that are available for young physicians who are interested in nutrition, which can help them get a jump start in this field.
