We couldn’t think of a better band to get in for our 30th episode than the mighty Boostive from Ocean Beach CA. These are some of our favorite people and musicians in town, and together they make up a collective that is starting to get the respect they deserve around the country and world. We got to joke around and talk about all of their big accomplishments like opening for and working with a lot of their heroes like Vaughn Benjamin RIP, Lee Scratch Perry RIP, Zion I RIP Zumbi, Slum Village, Slightly Stoopid, Bonobo, and Thievery Corporation to name a few.
The group got its roots when Seiji Komo (bass), Dr. Dylan Webber (guitar), and Nathan Kocivar (keys, sax) started making music together in High School. The guys moved up to Santa Cruz to go to college where Seiji discovered sampled music and fell in love. The collective has been growing and evolving since then and now includes Divina Jasso with some of the most powerful and beautiful vocals. Her lyrics are poetic and thought-provoking. Along with the all star band including Malachi Johnson on Drum Kit, Mitchum Yacoub on Percussion, Ty Kiernan on percussion, Kani on Djembe, and Wesley Etienne on Trombone this group makes music that moves you physically and spiritually.
We got to chat about their release Sun // Another Day on Mitchum and Tim Feltens SD based record label All Town Sound. Here’s a link to the 45, snag one while you still can. https://alltownsound.bandcamp.com/album/sun-another-day
As well as all the things in the pipeline. Most importantly you have to see this band live. They are hitting stages all around the world, so make sure you tell your friends about Boostive. Go buy their epic merch also. https://www.boostive.world/
These humans are truly some of the most hardworking and talented people in the world. We are so lucky to have them in our backyard.
Check out the legend Dr. Dylan Webber’s webpage to learn more about his acupuncture practice! What a true healer he is. https://www.drwebberacu.com/
What more can I say that the music doesn’t say for itself. Give these guys a listen and thank you for supporting community! Get ready for Boostive to take over the world!

On the evening of February 6th, 2023 we gathered to honor and celebrate the life of the great Cowboy Steve. In studio and online via zoom we were surrounded by family and friends including Cowboy’s lovely wife Adrianne and beloved dog Boone. After hearing stories about Cowboy one thing is certain, he loved his family and everyone in his life so much. He touched many lives through his passion for music. The type of human being we all strive to be. Cowboy practiced what he preached and lived a life full of adventure and color.
Nena Anderson, Adrian Demain, and Jim Austin (three fifths of the band Brawley) opened up this special night with a few tunes that were close to Cowboy’s heart. Cousin Eli also shared a heartfelt song that brought us to tears. The final musical guests were Cowboys good friends Matt Ricketts and Katy Martin who’s harmonies brought chills to our bones. This special evening was all put together by one of our oldest musical friends Taylor Wagner. Cowboy was a mentor, great friend, and partner to Taylor. May we rest easy knowing that people like Cowboy have literally changed lives by being truly themselves. The evening was closed out by the man himself performing in a very special winery that happened to have a little recording studio. What Adrianne described as one of the most magical occurrences stumbling across this winery on a long road trip they took near the end of this incredible human’s time here on earth.

Here at BT we love musical diversity and originality. I have been waiting a long time to get these guys on the show to display just that. Danny Toranzo plays guitar and sings in the group under his name sake, Toranzo. Patrick McCaffery rocks alongside Danny playing keys and singing backup vocals. Dane “Sauce Master” Delaney holds it down on the kit and also happens to make amazing hot sauce under the company name “Sauce Master Shawtys”. Local legend Caleb Quam holds the groove with the sauce master on the Bass. They have been collaborating live with one of San Diego’s hottest artists Adam Flowers who also joined us on this special evening. I met Adam through these cats a few months back and then I saw him appear on Aron’s (Aron The Bassist) new EP and first release. On this record are some of the greatest musicians of our time including Keyon Harrold who Adam told us went to his dads house. My mind was blown by Adam’s voice, flow, and approach to recording. I’ve been listening to his albums non-stop ever since I first hit play.
We were blessed with some of Toranzo’s original tunes before Adam joined them for some tunes from his catalog. This group embodies creativity to the fullest and has a unique style that blends elements from R&B, Soul, and Hip-Hop. Their debut full length record is expected to be out this year. You can bet that these guys will be turning some heads when the record drops. Check out there 2 singles out now “Rooftops” and “Sweet” here on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/06sNuFbHd33lrQe1mlSvCJ
Adam just dropped two new records recently. You can find both “While I’m Here” - 2022 and “4LOKO2009” - 2023 on all streaming platforms. Also many dope videos here:

We first caught wind of Sleepy Pearls from our good friend Jordan Andreen who joined the Pearls for this very special Barn Time performance on a myriad of instruments. Jordan has been working with them in the studio to help create their signature dreamy sound that we fell in love with. Also in attendance is session ace Malachi Johnson who has also been working with the band in the studio. We were also very blessed to have the incomparable Clinton Prager with us to chat about life, music and the pursuit of baking the best bread in the world. Prager Brothers really have changed the game in San Diego for REAL bread.
At its core Sleepy Pearls are the brainchild of Violette Larsen and Brendan Michie. The two bonded over having similar music taste which led them to start writing together and organically form the Sleepy Pearls. They describe their music as being inspired by a byegone era of coastal California doo wop and Western folk of the Fifties and Sixties. Everything about the band is fun and entertaining. Kind hearted people truly doing what they love.
The two singles they have released from their upcoming debut album, “If I Thought About It” and “San Francisco”, have incredible videos paired with them all shot by the band on super 8 film. This dynamic duo has proven to work hard for their dreams and they are turning heads wherever they land. Make sure to check their website and socials for show dates and new material.

We have been waiting for the perfect time to bring back our very first guest. Helena Holleran is a soulful songstress that lives music. It’s not surprising that over time she has put together one of the most talented groups of musicians in the area. A few Barn Time Alumni make up her “super group”. Malachi Johnson on Drums, Anthony Cullins on Guitar and Ty Kiernan on Percussion (Ep.7/Ep.24) are also joined by soon to be new father and great human being David Issac on Bass and cosmic master of space & time Kurtis Ray on Saxophone. This all star cast really makes Helena’s well crafted songs come to life. People often compare Helena’s voice to the great Joni Mitchell, but the fact is her voice and her sound is very unique in its own right. As even more of a treat we also had Brad Zell from QSC joining us. Brad and Helena often gig together and have been friends for a while. He also joins the band on bass for the last tune.
Helena can be found playing all over San Diego and Orange County most nights of the week, which I'm sure keeps her chops up and inspiration flowing. Her new record is due out next year and will no doubt lead her to touring the world and the great success she is destined for. Not only a great musician, but Helena and her band are the nicest, most humble people you’ll meet. Do yourself a favor and keep your eye on this emerging star. https://helenaholleranmusic.com/

Oct. 20 ‘22 (the day after Kyre’s 30th b day) marked the return of the great Anthony Cullins. This time with a much bigger band and pro skater Alex Sorgente hanging out with the crew. Joining Anthony’s circus was Phunky Phil Pardel on drum kit, Malachi Johnson on drum kit, Ty Kiernan on Percussion, and Kyre Wilcox playing bass and co-hosting. Ace horn section included Gabe Carson on sax, Cade Gotthardt on trumpet, and Wesley Etienne on trombone. Big thanks to Mel for stepping in and co-hosting the show for Zach.
The energy was huge in the room and the band wasn’t afraid to let loose. Anthony Cullins’ tunes are hard to describe. Many genres blend to make a beautiful vortex of creative sonic space. The members feed off each other and the audience can tell the limits are being pushed when solo sections arrive. This was Alex’s first time seeing the group and he was blown away so much that he arranged for them to play the premiere of his new Red Bull Skate part “Vero Amore” the following night.
Do yourself a favor and watch the heavy new part filmed and edited by Tylre Wilcox Click: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aPYv-YY9JM
We joked and laughed with this epic crew. You could say it was “Off The Chain”, the name of a startup clothing brand with the slogan “Surf Skate Moto”, created by Sorge and a couple of his homies. Anthony has a few recording projects he’s excited about releasing soon. Make sure you keep your eye on his website for these releases and live dates. Click: https://anthonycullins.com/
This really was a night to remember with people we genuinely love. “Vero Amore” (true love in Italian) is the perfect motto for this special night. Thank you to the lovely people who tuned in live and to you for supporting Barn Time and creativity.

What an incredible honor it was to have local Encinitas legend Jared Mattson (Mattson 2) and his new trio with Tony Ferraro (Toro Y Moi) and Joe Lyle (No Pulp Records New Orleans). Also bringing 91x's Tim Pyles was a dream come true.
Jared began writing his solo work during the pandemic, while his twin brother dove into being a killer booking agent. Jonathan booked their 35 show tour they are on now even though the album doesn't come out until sometime next year on Chaz Bears label Company Records.
We were very lucky to be the first ones to document this monumental triumph that is the Jared Mattson trio. Tim Pyles makes a reference to The Police about Jared's new sound that puts him over the moon to hear. The powerful blend of reggae and an indescribable sound that is unique to the Mattson clan is inspiring and a breath of fresh air in an age when a lot of music can start to sound redundant.
These gentleman are not only virtuosic in their playing but also are some of the sweetest humans we have the pleasure of knowing. To quote Victor Wooten's mother "What does the world need with another great musician? There are plenty. What the world needs are great people."
It's safe to say that this project is going to go far with their original sound and awesome attitudes. The barn was full of love and good times on this magical evening. Go see Jared Mattson in a town near you, you won't want to miss this experience of a lifetime. Also if your in New Orleans go to No Pulp Records and get your dig on.

It felt so incredible being back in the barn for a really special evening. Not one but two legendary guests. We sat down with The Dude Dan Cervantes, known around town for flying the mothership that is the band Mrs. Henry http://www.mrshenry.com/ as well as running indie record label Blind Owl https://www.blindowlsd.com/. Also blessing us with his presence was John Barry founder of Rollin’ From The Heart the Ian “Poods” Barry Foundation http://www.rollinfromtheheart.org/. RFTH’s mission is to provide disadvantaged and at-risk youth the opportunity to participate in skateboarding, surfing and camping in an effort to promote a more active lifestyle and encourage positive choices. They send kids to camps, have sessions and give kids mentors to give them the best shot in life. It’s really remarkable what impact RFTH makes on kids lives. It was so special getting to talk with John about something so close to his heart and something that he is so passionate about. If you want to get involved don’t be shy to reach out.
We got to chat with Dan about new opportunities down in Mexico and Mrs. Henry’s recent press down south. He really wears so many hats and is determined to get his art, and so many others, out to the world. Check out his Valentines day extravaganza at the Casbah in SD with so many talented local singer songwriters. Pick up one of Dan's many releases on his label Blind Owl Records. His lovely wife Tina makes killer leather goods, make sure to check out her page https://www.facebook.com/HTKLeather/

Drew Pelisek is one of our oldest musical friends. Watching him grow as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter throughout the years has been quite remarkable. He’s toured the world playing bass with local band Chon, played drums and guitar for a million other bands, and humbled us with a fireside performance of some original music new and old. We talk about what he loves about music and also some of his favorite instruments. Also about his beginnings with music. Drew really is a SD legend and has so many beautiful melodies to share with the world. Make sure you catch a show soon. Drew always seems to be at the Soda Bar every week with 1 of his many projects. Thanks for being you Drew. Check out this write up in Impose Magazine for more Drew love. https://imposemagazine.com/music/drew-pelisek-two-chord-circles

We had been waiting a long time to have our good friend Clinton Prager on the show. I stand by the saying that all good things take time. No individual has contributed more to BT, and lives by those words than Clint Dawg. From helping us do test episodes, to supplying our crew and guests with the best sandwiches in town, we really appreciate all the support and love that Clint has provided.
Clint took us on a musical journey of his life. From his roots of classical and acoustic guitar, to his electrified jammage, this man has lived quite the life. He is very well traveled and diverse in hobbies. Clint is full of stories and insight on this crazy world we live in. Him and his brother started an artisan bread company 10 years ago and it has changed San Diego’s outlook, and access, to actual good bread. We are so thankful for the inspiration Clint gives us each and everyday. Sit back and enjoy the music stylings and wisdom of this true renaissance man.

This was a truly special day for us here at BT. Maracuyá is San Diego's first Cuban Timbá band created by Diego Velasquez who also plays Timbales in the group. To quote Omar Lopez "Diego is the only guy crazy enough to start a 16 piece orchestra in the middle of a pandemic". Like Barn Time itself, this band probably wouldn't have come to be if it wasn't for the world shutting down over night. Mostly because these guys are usually traveling around the world and busy with other musical endeavors. These musicians have dedicated their lives to this music, they eat and breathe the rhythms. Since this music is dance music it wouldn't have been the same without the Iroko Dance Company (https://www.instagram.com/irokosdfranchise/?hl=en) They really impressed us with their traditional moves. Reach out to them if you want to learn!
This gathering was so legendary and exciting for us so we had to move it to the front yard and invite a few family members. The band was so tight and on fire I think the whole neighborhood had a smile on their faces and a groove in their step. I think it was by far the highlight of our quarintime. We hope you appreciate the wisdom, talent, and dedication that this group brings. We are forever grateful for the love and inspiration brought to us by Maracuyá. Thanks again legends!

Lee Coulter is one of the most down to earth, and hardest working musicians in San Diego. Born and raised in Australia, yet he has spent most of his adult life in the US. We have been big fans of his for many years and feel blessed to have experienced the magic Lee brings to each performance. He has dedicated his life to writing songs, and you can hear the love and passion in each tune. Lee brings so much joy and comfort into the room whenever he is present. His journey is a very interesting one, in this episode Lee shares his stories as a traveling musician, unique/independent recording styles and how to be an out-of-the-box creative modern day musician.
Be on the lookout for more great things coming from Lee Coulter. There isn't a thing this guy can't do. Also check out his website to see how you can support and collaborate with him personally at http://leecoulter.com/

What an inspiration it was seeing the level of dedication to music Clinton Ross Davis embodies. He really is a true gem in San Diego. Originally from Kentucky, he has been in SD for 12 years. Few people world wide are keeping this old-time folk music alive like Clinton is. He is a blazing multi-instrumentalist and a master at anything he lays his hands on. His new album “If I Live and I Don’t Get Killed” on Tiki Parlour Recordings began conception in March 2020 and it is out now! Purchase it here through his website. http://clintonrossdavis.com/
We really had a blast conversing with Clinton and getting to hear him do what he does best. Rule at life! Cozy up by the fire with us and enjoy the charm of Clinton Davis. We want to thank our friends Tim and Mara for introducing us to Clinton. Check them out on Ep.012 here https://youtu.be/eShe5PQ4L-0

No one kept the music alive like The Chunky Hustle Brass Band during the pandemic. They played a free and safe show on the grass in Balboa Park every weekend for the people. Their motto is “We give the people not what they want, but what they need”. Which could not be more true in a time when us humans were locked up and isolated from our community. Led by sousaphonist Aaron Grag, who also teaches a free yoga class on Sundays in the park, CHuBB is keeping the New Orleans tradition alive here on the west coast. With their own spin of course. Adding elements of ska, soul, and funk, they draw from a wide range of influences. Drummer Ron Bocian is a Brass Band staple in SD. Originally from New Orleans he formed Euphoria Brass Band in 2011 alongside David Bandrowski and local jazz radio DJ, Drew Miller. We get the vibe that EBB has acted as mentors to this up and coming Brass Band.
Originally dubbed Crew D’Etat Brass Band, The Chunky Hustle Brass Band (CHuBB) began in 2018 as a group of musical citizens wanting to support the equality march and women’s march
“We gathered on Mission Bay late afternoons through sunsets and under full moons creating a palette of New Orleans street funk and classic and contemporary R&B. The joy the music brought evolved our desire to form Crew D’Etat Brass Band now a notable outfit in the San Diego music scene.” -taken from (https://chunkyhustlebrassband.com)
Whether ChuBB is performing a highly creative original tune by Aaron or another member, or they are doing an arrangement of a popular tune, these guys always make you dance and smile. There is a lot of light and love in this band that’s for sure. We had the pleasure of hosting Trombonist, Wili Flemming’s group Fresh Veggies Micro Brass, on Ep.008 that also features Aaron Gragg on the Sousaphone. (youtu.be/htxn2YCSbQ4) Keep your eye’s peeled for the new album by ChuBB dropping soon!

It was a very special Earth Day this year, for a multitude of reasons. Our incredible planet was given somewhat of a rest in pollution with the world shutting down due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Even more importantly we were able to get THE Juice Box down to the Barn to share their virtuosic talents and masterfully crafted songs.
The group is led by drummer Matthew Elton Smith who we had on Ep.009 with Fresh Veggies Micro Brass (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htxn2YCSbQ4&t=2877s). Matt is one of SD's finest musicians and also hosts a really killer podcast every Tuesday at noon called The Drum Stream (https://www.thedrumstream.com/) He created Juice Box after first hearing the group Vulfpeck and falling in love with their sound. Amongst being a ridiculous monster drummer, Matt also went to school for the trombone and is always picking up new instruments including the Mbira. Joining him in this super group is Louie Valenzuela on guitar, whom also runs a live-stream called Electric Louie Land (https://www.electriclouieland.com/index.html) Louie is always putting on events and playing around town make sure you see what he's got cooking. On keys is the legendary Ed Kornhauser (https://edkornhauser.com/). Ed quite simply is one of the tastiest keyboardists and prominent pin collectors this side of the mississip. He puts a spell on us with his solos and witty charm. On bass tonight is the self proclaimed "5th Beatle" Harvey Magsino. Bass duty is filled by Harvey and SD's own Omar Lopez who is the MD for Maracuyá who we had on Ep.019 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53g0JDzsn3Q&t=1s)
Juice Box played the SD fair every day in 2021 and is hoping to be back this year for more fun. They have two albums out that you can grab on their bandcamp (https://juiceboxsd.bandcamp.com/) The s/t first LP is available on purple vinyl and Vol.2 you can get digitally. Make sure you catch these guys any chance you get. We are so thankful that the pandemic gave us all some time off to get back to our roots and connect with our passion projects. Thank you again to Juice Box for taking the time to make this happen safely in a very uncertain time.

Our good friends and power couple Kimmi Bitter and Willis Farnsworth join us fireside to play some brand new tunes and talk about their maiden voyage to Nashville, TN. We were lucky enough to catch them right before leaving home with nothing but an old van named the Colonel and a couple of Gibsons. It's been a joy seeing them grow here in the SD music scene and I'm sure they will thrive in their new home base.
These two have a passion burning deep in their souls, and have always yearned to be on the road. The music they make is soulful, catchy, and will make you want to sing along. Kimmi’s powerful vocals and Willis's tasteful and slick guitar playing are a recipe for greatness. Wherever they go I know that these two will have so much fun spreading their music and love around the world.
We also have to acknowledge how great of human beings these two are. Which to us is way more important than anything in the world. To quote Victor Wooten and his lovely mother "What does the world need with another good musician, there are plenty. What the world needs is good people." Lucky for us they are both, and have inspired the Barn Time crew no doubt. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more from this dynamic duo!

The Barn got a visit from some true legends on this fine spring evening. The Bennett Matteo Band is a collective of brilliant musicians led by guitarist and writer Gino Matteo and vocal powerhouse Jade Bennett. Extremely improvisational while having their feet planted in roots music, BMB are a breath of fresh air to the music world. BMB's experimentation and refusal to take themselves seriously has made every show an experience.
A real family band vibe, Gino and Jade being married and Trevor (drums) and Mikey (Bass) having been close friends since an early age. Jades ever so relatable lyrics and spine chilling melodies draw you in and leave you wanting more. Gino is a real genius on the guitar and blew our minds with his array of sounds and textures. The rhythm section was locked in a way only old friends can feel.
Look out for their new album recored at Greaseland Studios with Kid Anderson dropping this fall. Their music speaks for itself. These are some of the sweetest human beings and most talented people we've had the pleasure of meeting.

Recorded Live on 2/11/21 Rest in Power Chick Corea
We knew this was going to be a special night but I'd have to say my breath was taken away multiple times and my body was being filled with chills constantly. Mara Kaye, who has the voice of an angel, hails from Brooklyn, NY. She met and fell in love with local Encinitas legend Tim McNally while they were both teaching at a blues festival. Mara sings for her grandfather who was a phenomenal vocalist that never got the opportunity to do it out. The love and music these two share really gives us hope for the future. Along side them was master wordsmith and avid bird watcher Alfred Howard. Al is a true staple of San Diego and beyond. He finds meaning and love in writing lyrics and playing percussion for the talented bands in the Redwoods Music Label, as well as collecting music and slanging records at Vinyl Junkies. With some convincing we talked him into opening the show with a spoken word piece entitled "I love America". You'll hear for your self why we were so thrilled when Al agreed to coming on the show. Since the global pandemic has struck and the world seems to have ended for musicians Al had the idea to put out 2 songs a week by sending lyrics to musicians he enjoys and having the write a tune to them. The coolest part of the project is that his mother Marian Howard creates an original art piece for each song. You can subscribe to get the whole year of songs or just buy them individually as well as purchase the original artwork at: ALFREDHOWARDWRITES.COM So many incredible musicians are involved in this project including Mara and Tim. They performed a few songs from the project and it was a crazy experience for all of us because it was even the fist time Al had heard some of them. It was also the first time Mara and Al has met in real life which was very special. We got to chat about so many meaningful things so we hope you really enjoy this episode and please check out BE AN ARTS HERO : https://beanartshero.com/

As a powerful winter storm drew near we safely gathered around the fire moments before the rain came pouring down. The wind set the mood for this eclectic journey through time and space. Coby Lee Brooks is really an incredibly poetic storyteller with an unreal voice. The tunes he shared with us really bring you back to a simpler time when telling stories around the campfire was commonplace. It was initially Adrian Peter Ross we reached out to so that he could share the story of the iconic Bar and Restaurant / Store / Brand HOME. Adrian has very modestly been a mentor to so many individuals including Coby, who he suggested we have on the show with him. Adrian is also a very important figure in the North County SD community, and has played a big role in cultivating a true rock and roll scene and a sense of community. The synergy was pure magic you could feel in the air. We were so lucky to get to hear the story of HOME and all about the friendship between Adrian's uncle Richard Ross and John Lennon. In 1972 Richards friend May Pang introduced Lennon to Richard and to Home. The two formed a tight and spiritual relationship that would carry on for over a decade preceding their respective deaths in 1980 and 1984. Both Coby and Adrian have new music coming out this year that we are thrilled about. Coby has been traveling to Georgia to work with an incredibly talented producer named Mark Neill who is one of this generations pre-imminent producer/sound engineers. One recent big credit is The Black Keys "Brothers" album they cut in Mussel Shoals Alabama. Coby's new music is due out this Spring 2021 so keep your eyes peeled! Adrians new group Crashing Wayward has also been working with an awesome producer named Mike Gillies who has been working with Metallica for the past 25 years. Their first single entitled "Breathe" is out now and you can find it here:
https://www.crashingwayward.com/
Coby's website is to stay up to date: http://www.cobyleebrooks.com/
We are pumped to see what continues to come out of these hard working and genuine souls. If there is anything to take out of this night it is to never stop pursuing your dreams and to always follow your gut. Thanks again to our guests for blessing us at the Barn.

The stars aligned to bring us the most legendary line up for our first double digit episode. A portal seemed to open and all of a sudden we were in a guitar dreamland. One of the best humans to ever come out of Encinitas, Isaiah Mitchell, graced us with a few stories and his mesmerizing touch of the guitar. What better match than to have Nick Pourfard and Max Killigrew of Prisma Guitars to show off some of their latest masterpieces and return Isaiah's custom sunset model after a neck swap with Max's "Guitar of Friendship". We chat about Prisma collaborations such as the skate drum kit with Vessel Drums Co, the skate snowboard with DC, and 5 custom 1-of-1 guitars with legendary street artist Dalek. Isaiah shares about starting Earthless 19 years ago with his friends Mike Eginton and Mario Rubalcaba who he really looked up to as a kid. We talk about him getting to play with so many incredible people along the way such as Howlin Rain and The Black Crowes. As well as his friendship with Tim Brennan of TYM Guitars in Brisbane, AU who has made pedals for Mike and Isaiah out of his love for the band. There was so much to talk about but we were able to get a few jams in that left us all with our jaws to the floor each time. Let the music and stories speak for themselves and enjoy this journey as we did this fine evening.
