It’s very easy to have imposter syndrome in creative fields.
There’s no certification, no degree, no test you can take that allows you the title, Mix Engineer, or Producer, Songwriter. Unlike being called a doctor, lawyer, pilot, contractor, realtor, etc…
Crazy thing is, you can literally jump on the internet and a give yourself the title of being anything you want.
And so that makes it easy for everyone out in internetland to accuse you of being in imposter. Therefore, making it very easy for you to start doubting yourself and feeling like you don't belong.
But, that's OK!

Is this the plugin of the future, or just another marketing attempt to sell more of the same refurbished plugin?
In the past I have been a huge fan of iZotope’s Ozone. These plugins are so well designed and basically have the technology to “talk” to each other.
And then there’s the Assistant feature that basically listens to your your tracks and mixes it for you. Well, at least that is the goal. But, can a plugin really mix your entire song for you? Would you even want a plugin to do that instead of you?
Each year it seems iZotope is launching a new version of Ozone more frequently than ever before. Is that because it keeps getting better?
Let’s find out how smart this plugin has become and put it through the test of “mixing” completely raw audio tracks.
This episode’s key points:

Do you find guitar panning just a little confusing at times?
I know I do, especially when all you ever hear about is having only 3 panning choices - Left, Righ, and Center.
But, that’s not really true, is it?
I mean, if it were, a panning knob would be more of a switch with 3 settings instead of a full 180 degrees to choose from.
Right?
In this episode I’m going to show you my guitar panning techniques that give me more movement and clarity in my mixes.
This technique has made my mixes sound more musical and i know it will do the same for you!

How important are chamber reverbs to our mixes? One word… ESSENTIAL.
If there’s one mixing tip that I believe is crucial to a professional sounding mix, it’s using a chamber reverb for all instrument tracks. This is especially true when working with home studio recordings.
The good news is that we have amazing sounding chamber reverb plugins to replicate iconic recording studios. The same ones that produced some of the greatest albums of all time! That’s right. Abbey Road and Capitol Studios.
In this episode you’ll learn:
• A brief history on how reverb chambers became to be
• Why adding a chamber reverb to your mix will elevate it to a professional sound
• Which chamber reverb is best for certain elementsHope you enjoy!

Is parallel processing the secret sauce to producing a great sounding mix? I think it is, so let’s discuss.
►► FREE Start to Finish Guide to Creating a Song https://www.fairairmusic.com/StartGuide
I have modeled my mixing system around parallel processing and I haven't looked back. I built my template based on parallel compression for drums and all other instruments, even my lead vocals all go through parallel processing and it has made me a better mixer, producing better sounding mixes.
The difference in my mixes are like night and day.
Parallel processing has been around since the mid 1960's and was a known technique by the 70's, a time we now look back on as having the best sounding records. I believe this has a lot to do with this amazing technique.
In this episode you'll learn:

There is so much information on what “proper” mastering is. Many times the information we’re given tells us to process too much or too little, “add these specific plugins”, or “mastering is just increasing the output level”.
Now, we have entire mastering suits that claim to master your song using AI software all by just analyzing the audio from your mix. Scary or revolutionary? More importantly, does that kind of thing really produce commercially competitive sounding masters?
I’m sure you’ve heard this before, so it is no wonder why you might be confused.
The most important thing to remember is to listen for what needs to be corrected and not to just start adding a checklist full of processing plugins. Those do not work for every master.
Let's break down what mastering is all about and how to approach this craft so that we can produce the best sounding record possible.
In this episode you'll learn:

Have you ever wondered why your mix just sounds… off?
You might be doing everything right with the mix but still, something is missing. It could be that there are no harmony vocals.
We are used to hearing vocals a certain way with commercially released music that we hear on the radio and streaming devices.
In this episode you’ll learn:
- How to use Waves Harmony to create harmony vocals
- Understand the importance of harmonies
- What mistakes we make when trying to fill space around lead vocalsSo if you find yourself adding too much reverb to feel that empty vocal space, try adding in Waves Harmony instead!

Raw and unedited episode!
Have you joined a "mixing" facebook group only to find out that they screen ever posts and refuse to let members promote their own music or services?
Why is that? Why would it even be an issue to promote yourself or offer premium consulting or courses?
There is only one reason, control. And maybe some jealousy.
I can't even begin to understand why this is so threatening to these admins. I have a facebook group that is a part of my The Modern Mix platform, and I allow any music related post. I do have a couple of guidelines like, if you want to post your own music you need to give a little bit of information on why you are posting it. But that's really to help people learn to promote themselves properly.
I want you to make money from your music or music related product!

Today is going to be a bit of a run through, on what you can expect from the Modern Mix podcast. What it is, what it’s not.
This is a place where we discuss mixing, mastering, and audio engineering. But it’s also a place where we’re going to talk about the reality in those topics. It’s not regulated by a self righteous facebook group admin, haha. No ma'am.
This is a place for everyone to learn and share the common space.
I started The Modern Mix as sort of a response to all that misinformation and garbage that seems to just circulate in these social media groups and posts on Instagram and now TikTok. Just filling those platforms up with bad mixing/mastering advice, that only hurt those who are trying to find information to better their audio knowledge.
I know I fell into some of that misinformation around a decade ago when youtube tutorials were new and everyone was trying to get a channel going, and really just offering up anything they heard along the way and turned that into a mixing tutorial.
Nowadays, it's a million times worst trying to sift through all the bad information and learn proper audio engineering techniques.
So now, I have launched the brand new The Modern Mix - PODCAST and I wanted to let you know first!
Join me weekly as I share tips, techniques, education, and all around music conversation. It's a podcast for anyone who is into home recording, mixing, mastering, music business, and making a career out of it!
