Content warning: divorce, fertility issues, high risk pregnancy, hectic birth & cancer. In this episode I chat to Sharlie Wise of Sharlie Designs, a communications manager turned pot painter. We talked about start up businesses, the difficulty of pricing your items and how she works while having to care for a baby. We also chat about having both her partner and a support person during the birth of Lulu and having retained placenta afterwards. Sharlie would also like to make a note that Lulu’s head was NOT 52cm when she came out!

Josh talks about being a Kiwi tattoo artist during the COVID-19 pandemic, the naming of their babies, how the hospital they went to for the births uncomfortably pushed for natural births and how he was left in the birthing suite for 3 hours alone with his son Bobby, along with the mess he helped made.

Babe 8teen is Julie of Aacute, who gave birth to her daughter Lyra at the start of the pandemic when things were super unorganized and confusing. We chat about how her partner Tom wasn’t able to be with Julie during Lyra’s birth, nor was he able to depend the first night with them at the hospital; but also how lovely it was when they finally get to spend the first night together as a family of 3. A little note, with me being super scared of needles, Julie got me a bit sweaty when she recalls the process of getting an epidural; and even sweatier with how the midwife explained c-section to her.

How different her two daughters are, right down to labour pains. How we’d say we wouldn’t change our babies for the world but at the same time, okay maybe a little bit. Lastly, we chat the selling of Sarah’s old business to become a full time witch.

Babe Thirteen is Erin Lightfoot of Erin Lightfoot Ceramics Design Studio. We had a chat about how our babies are destroying the ability for us to drink, Erin trying to explain the actual pains of labour and what it feels like, the surprise sensation of pushing baby out of ya bum bum (quote a midwife “it’ll feel like you will poo a fridge.” and how your body transforms itself to help you with the birth of your baby.

In this last episode of the decade (oh my goodness!) Lisa Peri talks about a total career change and what it felt like to have finally found her “thing”. We also talk about how we see our small businesses as a community and not competition, how each of the pieces of work we ever created were made with sweat, tears and lots of swearing rather than love and of course, we talk the birth of her four children and how differently births were treated over 20 years ago.
