  • Author Peter Ames Carlin is a first-time guest. Peter’s latest book is The Name of This Band Is R.E.M.: A Biography.

In the spring of 1980, a unique group of musical eccentrics performed for the first time at a college party in Athens, Georgia. Within a few years, R.E.M. achieved global success with records like Document, Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People, and Monster. The band's raw and expressive style set them apart and made them voices of their generation during the transition from the 80s to the anxious early 90s, as they challenged corporate and social norms. In this episode, we delve into the lives of the four college friends—Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry—who remained united through it all.

  • Author Robert Boyd is this episode’s guest. He is the author of Before the Storm: The Formative Years of America's Last Great Band. Late in the last century, deep in the Pacific Northwest amongst the economic and psychological hardships of one town, America's last great band was born - Nirvana. The band's leader, a young introvert with superior songwriting talents, slowly molded a style inspired by punk, metal, sludge, and pop. The results changed the band and the music industry forever. Before the Storm chronicles the birth of Nirvana in Aberdeen, Washington, and their early years as independent artists to worldwide superstars. The outcome is known, but the infancy of the band and its rise is a compelling lesson in tenacity, unity, the love of music, and sadly, tragedy.

  • My guest is Allan Kozinn. He and Adrian Sinclair are the authors of The McCartney Legacy Volume 2: 1974-80. This is the follow-up to the first volume covering 1969 to 1973. The second volume continues to paint the portrait of one of the world’s greatest musicians, his work post-Beatles, and his life from 1974 to 1980.

By 1974 the Beatles were a distant memory, and Paul McCartney had already gone on to release a solo album and form a new band, Wings. By the decade's end, Wings would be the bestselling band of the 1970s. The McCartney Legacy, Vol. 2 begins in 1974 at the height of Wings' popularity and the beginning of McCartney’s next chapter. In this interview, Allan talks about the competitive relationship between Paul and John Lennon during this period, the Paul and John reunion project that wasn’t meant to be, the friction between Paul and Yoko, Paul’s near-death experience, his troubles with the law, his war with the music press, and much more.

  • Fifty years ago, in the fall of 1974, Bon Scott and AC/DC joined forces. They began building the foundation for what would go on to become one of the world’s biggest rock and roll bands. With Bon, they reached the height of their commercial success thanks to the multi-platinum-selling 1979 album Highway To Hell. After Bon’s untimely death, Brian Johnson stepped in as lead singer, and with 1980’s Back In Black, the band was even bigger. The album topped the charts and went on to sell 27 million copies. It ranks as one of the biggest-selling albums in music history.

Here to talk about the amazing story of AC/DC is author Susan Masino, who wrote the book Let There Be Rock: The Story Of AC/DC. Originally released in 2009, the updated edition was released through Omnibus Press in 2020. She is also the author of 2015’s AC/DC FAQ-All That’s Left to Know About the World’s True Rock and Roll Band. We talk about the band's storied history and find out what Susan thinks of the recent news - AC/DC has just announced the band's first US tour in nearly 10 years!

  • Don't care all that much for new music these days? You're not alone and our guest is going to explain why. On the podcast is author David Rowell. His book is titled The Endless Refrain: Memory, Nostalgia, and the Threat to New Music. The veteran music journalist argues that the rise of music streaming and the consolidation of digital platforms is decimating the musical landscape, with dire consequences for the future of our culture. In The Endless Refrain, Rowell lays out how commercial and cultural forces have laid waste to the cultural ecosystems that have produced decades of great American music.

From the scorched-earth demonetizing of artist revenue accomplished by Spotify and its ilk to the rise of dead artists “touring” via hologram, Rowell examines how a perfect storm of conditions have drained our shared musical landscape of vitality. Combining personal memoir, intimate on-the-ground reporting, industry research, and cultural criticism, Rowell’s book is a powerful indictment of a music culture gone awry, driven by conformity and subverted by the ways the internet and media influence what we listen to and how we listen to it.

For nearly 25 years David was an editor at The Washington Post Magazine and has taught literary journalism in the MFA department at American University. He is currently a senior editor at the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. His previous books include the novel The Train of Small Mercies, and Wherever the Sound Takes You: Heroics and Heartbreak in Music Making.

  • Returning to the podcast is Greg Prato. He’s just released his latest book titled Led Clones: The Led Zeppelin Imitator Craze of the '80s...and Beyond. Few bands in rock history have proven to be as enduring and influential as Led Zeppelin. And during the '80s, there was an overabundance of "Zeppelin disciples," or, as guitar great Gary Moore once put it, Led Clones. This is the first-ever book to tell the story about Zeppelin's immense influence on the bands and artists who came after them.

I ask Greg about many of the bands and artists in the book. The ones who do Zep justice and those who didn’t. There are the obvious ones like Kingdom Come, Whitesnake, and Greta Van Fleet while there are others you may be surprised make the book. Let’s find out!

  • This episode’s guest is Eric Drooker, the author of the new graphic novel titled Naked City. On the edge of the city, three bohemians struggle to answer the question: “Is it possible to survive as an artist in the 21st-century?” A young singer with no family hitchhikes to the city and sings her heart out. Late one night she encounters a street dancer who inspires her to have faith in her music no matter the cost. Desperate for rent money, she poses for a painter who has shifted from landscapes to nudes, and both of them learn a thing or two about the purpose of art and the meaning of success.

Eric Drooker’s drawings and posters are a familiar sight in the global street art movement, and his paintings appear frequently on covers of The New Yorker. His editorial illustrations have been seen in Nation, the New York Times, the Progressive, and more. His first book, Flood!: A Novel in Pictures, won the American Book Award, followed by Blood Song (soon to be a major motion picture). His graphic novels have been translated into seven languages. After designing the animation for the film Howl, Drooker was hired by DreamWorks Animation. His art is in the permanent collections of many museums including the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Library of Congress. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  • Author Suzanne Mattaboni is this episode’s guest. She recently released the second edition of her novel, Once In a Lifetime, a coming-of-age story set in the mid-1980s against a backdrop of vibrant music and art. The main character, an ambitious, new wave-influenced art student from Long Island who’s dying to kick-start her career—and her love life for that matter. She’s saving to get overseas to London, where the excitement of the post-punk era is coming to a head. To save for the trip, artsy Jessica and her avant-garde roommates take jobs in a progressive restaurant town on the Delaware River, where they deal with waitressing chaos, mystics, punk clubs, drag queens, mosh pits, and other assorted tribulations in an effort for Jess to find out what “real life” beyond the college classroom is like. Then she meets a daredevil new wave guitarist who spins her head like a record, potentially distracting her from her goals. In addition to an awesome backing soundtrack, the book leverages feminist themes, since the women of the ‘80s were the first generation to be told they could “have it all”—love, education, friendships, meaning, sex, careers, happiness, you name it. Except maybe the world wasn’t completely ready for those women to have it all. Which was a tough wall to push down. And this still resonates today.

Suzanne is on the show to talk about the book, what inspired storyline, the characters in the book, her experiences being a women of the ‘80s and more.

  • Back in June, I had author David Cain on to tell us about his book Infinite Dead: A Daily Guide to Grateful Dead Concert Performances Volume 2: July. I wanted to have him back on to talk about the first volume, which covers all the Dead shows during October. David made some time to come back on and I’m so glad he did. Very few bands deserve an in-depth look at a band’s live show, the Grateful Dead is at the top of that list.

Infinite Dead is a new, groundbreaking guide to Grateful Dead concerts. Authoritative and entertaining, Volume 1 features detailed reviews of every Grateful Dead concert performed in the month of October—over 200 shows, including:
The three-set, acoustic-electric performances at The Warfield in San Francisco and Radio City Music Hall in New York City;Their five-night “final” stand at the Winterland Ballroom in 1974; andThirteen Halloween performances, from their first in 1966 to their last in 1991.Also included in this volume is the band’s revival of “Dark Star” (10/9/89 Hampton Coliseum), “St. Stephen” (10/11/83 Madison Square Garden), and “Turn On Your Love Light” (10/16/81 Melkweg). What better month to talk about The Dead than the month of October!

David Cain has been listening to the music of the Grateful Dead for over forty years, including seeing live performances of the band in twenty-five cities in thirteen states during the course of three decades. David’s writing on music, sports, and other subjects has appeared in publications ranging from Addicted To Noise to USA Today’s Baseball Weekly. David lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  • Chris MacDonald is a first-time guest to the podcast. He’s the author of the new book Days and Days: A Story about Sunderland's Leatherface and the Ties That Bind. Days and Days weaves together two stories. One is a tale of friendship and self-discovery that occurs during a backpacking adventure through England, Scotland, and Ireland. The other celebrates the highly influential yet underestimated UK band Leatherface, a group that The Guardian called “the greatest British punk band of the modern era.”

Without so much as a single hostel booked, Chris and his friend Jason cross the Atlantic. They sleep in train stations, endure a haunting on top of a volcano in Edinburgh, are driven out of Belfast by the IRA, and witness the mother of all storms. They also find themselves in the rehearsal space of their teenage punk idols, a building steeped in cultural significance for the Sunderland music scene.
