Insights from Years of Hands-On Experience (and mistakes!)
Becoming a camel owner is a journey filled with excitement, wonder, and—let’s be honest—a bit of uncertainty. If you’ve found yourself Googling, “How to care for a camel?” only to hit a wall of sparse, inconsistent information, you’re not alone. Camels are truly one-of-a-kind animals, and caring for them requires a unique approach. A one-size-fits-all method just doesn’t work.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my years as a camel owner, trainer, and educator, it’s this: camel care often means learning by doing. There will be successes, yes, but there will also be missteps, and occasionally, heartbreak.
I’ve been through it all— from minor hiccups, steep learning curves, and some truly gut-wrenching losses. These experiences shaped my understanding of camels and deepened my respect for their complexity and resilience.
It’s why I’m so passionate about sharing what I’ve learned, not just to make life easier for other camel enthusiasts, but also to ensure these amazing animals get the care they deserve and to encourage more camel ownership worldwide.
My goal is to help like-minded, compassionate people like you—whether you’re already caring for camels or just considering it—together we can give camel’s the healthiest, happiest lives possible and debunk the misinformation that got me caught out on more than a few occasions.
From this I’ve developed practical, proven strategies for camel husbandry that focus on prevention, building trust, and truly understanding these fascinating creatures. And the best part? You don’t have to learn the hard way like I did.

What SHOULD a camel eat? Camel’s will eat many different things, even things that aren’t good for them, but that doesn’t warrant correct feeding.
A big myth that people (particularly in Australia) have about camels that they will eat crappy hays and feeds and often stockfeed places will try to sell these to new camel owners, only for the owner to have sick camels either soon after feeding or months after (remember camels are survival animals, they WILL hide their symptoms).
Tune into this episode to learn 3 Camel Feeding Rules to follow.

Camels are very sensitive creatures, yet can seem aloof in their demeanour, given this they are susceptible to experience trauma easily, especially if you don’t know how a camel thinks and how to handle them in a way that they understand.Podcast: Traumatised Camels: Signs & RecoveryMentioned: The Camel Channel Academy ( https://.camelchannel.com/membership )

The truth is, not all camels will be a good match for you.
Worse still, there are no dating sites to match camels to people *wink!*
I never advise people who are keen to buy camels to just “buy a camel or two.”
Over the years that I’ve been teaching people about camels, and in some cases 'matching’ them to their first few camels (yeah, call me the Camel Match Maker LOL), I’ve discovered that most people don’t consider their own personality & a camel’s personality when buying their first camels - which is ironic, since you’ll be spending many many years (like 30+ years) with them.
I can see it from a mile away when people try to force their camel-human relationship to work. Sometimes it just doesn't work, it’s not a good match and it’s time to move on (so much of this sounds like human romance hey! LOL).
In this Camel Channel podcast episode I talk about how you can match yourself with a camel using the tips & advice I give to help you have a harmonious relationship & life with the camels you choose, whether it be as a camel pet or a working camel.

Having a camel as a pet is one of the most enjoyable things to experience. Sure, they aren’t dog sized (but kinda ‘dog like’ in behaviour) and they require particular husbandry requirements specific to camels.
Knowledge is power to pet camel ownership!
Many people across the globe are enjoying their ‘Pet Camel’ in a variety of ways from pleasure riding and trekking to simply just being with their camel.
In this video, I explain what you need to know to have a pet camel.
I cover things like:
Housing Camel behaviours Husbandry Requirements Training & Handling requirements -
Many people come to me with their dream and goal of doing their own camel trek. From talking & teaching hundreds of camel people & camel lovers I discovered these statistics:Only 10% of people will actually gain momentum on their camel trekking goals & dreams and only 1-2% will achieve their goals. It bothers me, because 9 times out of 10 it’s people getting in their own way of their true desires. How do I know this…? Because I was one of these people!I believe we have inspiration and desires for a reason and they should be questioned to see where this leads us. Life is too damn short not to live out our dreams & goals don’t you think!?In this Camel Channel Podcast episode I offer up some words or wisdom and practical advice on how you can achieve any camel trekking (or just ‘camel’) goals & dreams.Listen in to hear some of my stories on how I became a ‘victim’ to my own camel trekking dreams and how I turned that around… AND… some things you can start doing right now to start taking steps towards your ‘camel desires’ (and learn if your desires are true for you & how to determine this). Please subscribe to this wherever you’re listening and if you’re enjoying these episode please leave a comment or review!
