“If music is not emo(tional), then what is it exactly?”
CHATEAU DISASTER – Emo Radio delves into this very question. Hosted by Sebastian Wahle and his guests, the show seeks not only to grasp the essence of "Emo" but also to engage in extensive discussions about this highly polarizing genre and music in general. The backdrop for these conversations is provided by ten songs that are somehow connected to Emo, Screamo, or Post-Hardcore, and all the participants have developed a profound connection to these tracks. Consequently, you might hear PALE's frontman, Holger Kochs, discussing not only THE PROMISE RING but also THE1975 and their influence on his music. Meanwhile, End Hits Records' boss, Oise Ronsberger, declares LEATHERFACE as one of the most significant Emo bands. In addition to these notable figures, guests on the show have included Brian McTernan, known for producing records for acts like HOT WATER MUSIC, THRICE, and the early TEXAS IS THE REASON releases. The show has hosted over 50 episodes, featuring prominent figures from the scene such as Matt Davies-Kreye from FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND, Kevin Devine, Jason Black and Chris Wollard from HOT WATER MUSIC, and Visions editor and Emo connoisseur Jan Schwarzkamp.
Since the anniversary episode in May, live recordings in front of an audience have become a regular feature. These highly emotional shows have been punctuated by unique live performances from artists like Michael Walmsley (ex-THREE MINUTE POETRY), Tanja Kührer (STILL TALK), Sebastian Henkelmann (ex-ESCAPADO), and Nicholas Müller (JUPITER JONES).
In addition to the scene veterans like Benjamin Sturm from CAPTAIN PLANET and the entire band YAGE, the show frequently features young, talented artists and bands whose musical roots stretch back to Emo. Figures such as Joachim Hiller, the editor-in-chief and publisher of Ox-Fanzine, have shared their insights on bands like DAG NASTY and the magnificent FUGAZI. Dave Smalley from DAG NASTY reminisces in his episode about the early days of the scene, expressing his wish that the energy of "back then" should continue to drive the scene today.
The question of what Emo truly is can only be answered by the guests at the end, drawing from their personal experiences. CHATEAU DISASTER – Emo Radio is more than just a podcast or a straightforward interview format; it's a platform for discussing music, especially its emotional aspects, and delving into the backgrounds of the guests.
For the upcoming months, the CHATEAU has exciting plans, including more live recordings in front of audiences (including Booze Cruise 2024) and Emo parties in various cities like Essen, Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin.
