  • Cinematic Sound Radio's series of film, TV and video game composer interviews continues as Jason Drury chats with recording engineer legend, Bruce Botnick.

In 2019, film music fans celebrated the 90th anniversary of the birth one of the greatest film composers of all time, Jerry Goldsmith.

To celebrate this Cinematic Sound Radio presents an interview with the man behind the mixing desk of over 100 of the scores composed by Jerry Goldsmith, the legendary music engineer and producer, Bruce Botnick.

Bruce Botnick is an audio engineer and record producer, best known in the music industry for his work with The Doors, Buffalo Springfield and The Beach Boys. He's also has a credit as one of the “boys in the backroom” on The Rolling Stones album Let It Bleed.

Botnick’s long-running association with Jerry Goldsmith began on 1979’s STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE and from that, they worked together on most of Goldsmith’s film projects – numbering well over 100 – from the 1980s right through to Goldsmith’s death in 2004.

Bruce Botnick has also recorded and mixed motion pictures scores for composers such as John Williams, David Newman, Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Joe Kraemer, and Christophe Beck.

Since Goldsmith’s passing, Botnick has been working on remastering past Goldsmith scores, some he originally worked on and some he did not for special deluxe reissues for all the major film soundtrack labels. He has also continued his association with The Doors and Frank Zappa with restoration mixing of long-form videos of their historic concerts.

In August 2019, Jason Drury talked to Bruce Botnick via Skype at his home in Los Angeles.

In the first of a three-part interview, Botnick talks about how he got into the music industry, his work with some of the major bands of the 60s and 70s, his first meeting with Jerry Goldsmith and working with John Williams on two of his iconic scores, E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL and INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM.

Also during the show, you will hear selections fro, some of the music that Bruce Botnick has been associated with, from bands such as Love, The Doors, The Beach Boys and Buffalo Springfield as well as music from John Willams and Jerry Goldsmith.

  • Welcome to another of the continuing series of film, TV and video game composer interviews on CINEMATIC SOUND RADO.

Today Jason Drury chats with composer Paul Mills.

Born in West Texas, Mills spent the early days of his career in the studios of Music Row, producing and recording artists like The Imperials, Wayne Watson, Phillips, Craig & Dean, Twila Paris, and Newsong. Over those industrious ten-plus years, Paul's production efforts helped to craft a staggering 40 #1 singles. He also produced and co-created the highly successful album/concert series, "The Young Messiah," an annual Christmas tour boasting a variety of talented artists.

The accumulation of such a wide range of accomplishments earned this busy musician his first-ever GMA nomination for Producer of the Year early in his career. Since that accolade, others have been added to the list including American Songwriter Magazine's 'Christian Producer of the Year,' Best Score at the Gideon Film Festival, and multiple Platinum and Gold-selling albums and compilations.

Through his work as a producer, Paul was led to filmmakers The Erwin Brothers where he produced music for the Roadside Attractions music biopic I Can Only Imagine starring Dennis Quaid.

Some of Paul's other film credits include the critically acclaimed WOODLAWN starring Sean Austin, AGAINST THE SUN starring Garret Dillahunt, Tom Felton, and Jake Abel, KILL THE MAN starring Luke Wilson and Joshua Malina and STILL BREATHING starring Brendan Fraser and Joanna Going, among others.

In September 2019, Jason Drury talked to Mills via skype at his home in Texas about his latest score to OVERCOMER, his collaborations with the Kendrick and Erwin Brothers and his career in film music in general.

Also during the show, you will be hearing music from the fore-mentioned OVERCOMER and also some of Paul’s other memorable scores.

“Overcomer” follows the story of high school basketball coach John Harrison (played by Alex Kendrick) and his team as they face an uncertain future when their town's largest manufacturing plant shuts down unexpectedly. As hundreds of people move away, John reluctantly agrees to coach cross-country. His outlook soon changes when he meets Hannah Scott (newcomer Aryn Wright-Thompson), a runner who pushes herself to the limit for the biggest race of her life.

The film marks the anticipated return of filmmakers and brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick after their #1 box-office hit “War Room”, and their second collaboration with Multi-award winning composer and producer Paul Mills.

  • “I’m back in the saddle again” – Aerosmith

It’s been seven months since I last prepared an episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO. I apologize for those that were interested in hearing the rest of my favourite scores of 2018. I’ll most likely just publish a quick blog post with the rest of my list for those that are interested.

The reasons for my absence has been well documented on social media (everything ranging from depression to anxiety to work to just basically burning out). Yes, I almost quit completely but the outpouring of support showed me that you deserved better and that I should keep this show going.

First of all, I just want to thank Jason Drury, Brandon Shea-Mutala, Eric Silver, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews for keeping the content fresh during my absence. This isn’t the first time they’ve saved my bacon and it probably won’t be the last. Without them, this show, this site would be dead.

By the way, I just published a new hosts and talents bio page. We’ve never had one so take a peek and learn a little about your favourite CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO talent.

    http://www.cinematicsound.net/hosts-talent-bios/

And of course, thank you, the listener for stick by me and the program. Even in my absence, you’ve managed to make 2019 a record-breaking year for downloads/listens. As it stands right now our downloads/listens is up 8% from last year. Unfortunately, our audience size has dwindled in my absence.

    Let’s remedy that.

This show took me months to prepare but it’s finally done and I’m eager to do more. Therefore, I thought I’d present something special for you to celebrate my return to podcasting. Today you’ll hear music from albums that are a bit difficult to acquire.

On the program, you are going to hear selections from hidden soundtrack gems like SLIPSTREAM (Bernstein), U-571 (Marvin), PHENOMENON (Newman), CAPTAIN POWER AND THE SOLDIERS OF THE FUTURE (Guttman), INSPECTOR GADGET (Debney) and WHITE FANG 2: MYTH OF THE WHITE WOLF (Debney)

    Enjoy!
