We've got a really trashy episode for you this week! The 20-teens version of Sherlock (nope, not that one -- the American one with Lucy Liu) goes looking for a left-handed archaeologist and discovers the sordid underbelly of urban development along with '80s video game urban myths. But first we tackle the really big questions: Is there anything better than an answering machine for delivering exposition? Is pie the official food of private investigators? Will Jacob ever remember an actor's name?
We watched ELEMENTARY season 4, episode 5, "The Game's Underfoot." Spoilers ahead!

After taking it away from Max, Netflix took Dead Boy Detectives to the max! They test the premise in simple ways (turning a crow into a heartsick teen), inventive (using a magic bag to hide from a demon from the depths of Hell) and macabre (I guarantee you have never seen sausage links used like this). And we finally get to do some legit bonkers guessing! But do we get it right? (And where do the Dead Boys get their office supplies?) We watched Dead Boy Detectives season 1, episode 5, "The Case of the Two Dead Dragons." Spoilers ahead!

It's a guest star extravanza! This show has the same number of guest stars as Maigret creator George Simenon had maids that he slept with. (It's more than you think!) This hard-boiled, early '90s take on a 1950s detective has smoking, stripping, saxophones direct from the '80s -- and famous people doing depraved things for love and drugs. Did the cognitive dissonance keep us from guessing whodunnit? Or can we actually get a win? We Watched Maigret season 2, episode 1, "Maigret and the Night Club Dancer."

This is the end -- or the beginning of Season 2! Jess floats (and gloats) in an amazing victory while Jacob deals with his feelings. We exult in the power of the side eye in a close up, revel in the madness of a punning mass murderer, and clutch our pearls over the possibility of an Evil Ira Glass. Plus, Jacob denies every having worried about getting his nuts crushed in an elevator. We also hand out some Christies, because we finally finished Season One! We watched Only Murders in the Building, season 1, episode 10, "Open and Shut."

It's another how-catch-em! Even after we know the criminal, can we guess how they catch 'em? Is Elsbeth really just Batman with tote bags? Can you make it rain with Post-It Notes? Does Nancy Silverton's latest cookbook give us a clue as to how the murderer is caught? Listen and find out as we watch Elsbeth season one episode 7, "Something Blue."

Is the game "Peek-a-Boo" true crime for the pre-K set? Does a body double know you better than yourself? And does Jessica really think Only Murders is like the Barbra Streisand / Nick Nolte romance about childhood abuse "Prince of Tides"?
We're on episode 9 of Only Murders in the Building Season 1. Are we finally close to learning whodunit?

There's so much musical theatre talent in this episode we nearly burst into song. We didn't, but we did create radio plays based on TV and theatre's on-again/off-again relationship. Jessica makes an incredible faux pas around murder boards while we launch an investigation into whether a BMW or an old Volkswagen bus make a better bitchin' private investigator car. But can we guess the murderer correctly? #sohelpmetodd

Follow me now into an episode of mirrors where our fake-crime fan podcast about a TV show about a true crime podcast that stages a play with their fans to create a fake ending to their totally made-up real mystery. I think the idea of "meta" just collapsed under the weight of this conceit. Can we salvage some correct guesses out of the rubble? And where can we find a floor plan for the Arconia?

We go back to college with Will Trent! Our senior thesis group project is trying to make a detective show built entirely around tea. Which is good because apparently Jacob has only been eating raw egg smoothies while training to get better at guessing. Maybe he should have just stuck to the experimental drugs like the college kids in this episode were dosing on. Will all the tea and training pay off with a correct guess?

Our favorite caterer passes the PI test! She has a bitchin' car, so she can solve all the crimes she wants to as far as we're concerned. Jessica shares some conspiracy theories about the album "Abbey Road" that go beyond "Paul is dead," and maps out England's comeback as Christmas movie king. But can she correctly guess the killer?

We get loud about a silent episode! We learn what Teddy's favorite musical is, just how bad Charles is at Scrabble, and, oh yeah, who killed Zoe. Get ready for some big emotions people because this episode rocked our world with revelations galore -- but only one line of spoken dialogue. Nathan Lane won an Emmy for this episode, so did the sound crew, and OMG did they all ever deserve it!

We're not afraid to tackle the hard questions on this show. To wit: Would it be worth having a job based around antique bedpans to live in the South of France? Could a song about grandmas really be a number one hit? Would community theatre practitioners resort to a crime spree in order to fund their latest production? And maybe, somehow, with facts like this, could we pull out a win?
In case you're curious about that grandma song, here's a link to the video of "Grandma, We Love You," with the future star of Madame Blanc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsXJcIODLtQ
And in case you weren't alive the first time this animal video swept over the internet, may I introduce you to the BBC's "Walk on the Wild Side."

We learn the truth about Gut Milk! And expired hummus! We also reflect on when people move beyond being "randos" or the femme fatale into actually being friends. And Jacob picks a new suspect who is ... a character on a barely-remembered Fox sitcom?

Father Brown meets a hero of his ... and gradually realizes she's a little cuckoo. But is she crazy enough to have murdered three people? And what exactly is Reiki applause? And could a stripper have the best role in a series led by a priest? Break out your scariest murder doll and guess along as we watch Father Brown solve "The Smallest of Things." (2013 version of Father Brown, season 5, episode 7.)

They have a bitchin' car! Ladies and gentlemen, Only Murders in the Building has nailed another trope: Our fearless investigators now have a bitchin' 1973 Peugeot! Apparently it's in rough shape and needs to be brined which, OK, but it's good enough to get them out to Long Island and running on fumes and horrible puns. Mabel also finds the only alleyway in New York City -- but do we find anything that will lead us closer to the killer?
We watched Only Murders in the Building, season 1, episode 5, "Twist."

Tell me you were filmed post-COVID lockdown without telling me: There was a bike race, a changing of the guard, a lecture hall, a tai chi class, sunbathers, and a more frisbee throwers than the crowd outside a Phish concert -- all before the title sequence. We tackle whether serial killers eat french fries or salad, but do we guess the killer correctly?
We watched McDonald and Dodds, series 3, episode 1, "Belvedere."

Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig may get more screen time, but Sting is truly the star of this episode. Which makes us wonder: What other Steve Martin or Martin Short movies would benefit from having Stings as a co-star? Would he have been a good heart-throb in Roxanne? Sting as the fourth Amigo? Sting as the fiancee in Father of the Bride? But Steve and Martin are also musicians, so what if they took on all of Sting's roles? I for one would love to have seen Martin Short in the 1984 David Lynch production of "Dune." And I think the last Police tour could really have benefited from Steve Martin on banjo.
But did any of this help us narrow down the killer?!?!?? Listen and find out!
We watched Only Murders in the Building, Season 1, Episode 4: "The Sting."

They have three punctuation marks in one title, which is impressive, but I feel like they could have gotten more if they really tried. It's just begging for an exlamation mark at the end and I bet they could have put an umlaut over the "o" in Monk and really screwed with everyone. We debate our own head canon about who characters really are -- but do we correctly guess the killer? Listen and find out!
We watched the 2023 Monk special, "Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie."

He actually exists! Despite our frequent jokes to the contrary, Kit Lambert is an actual real person, not just Jude Tindall's alter ego. And he was gracious enough to join us on the pod. Listen in to hear about angsty teenage poetry, honeymoon poison discoveries, and getting thrown out of a funeral's wake with a heavy metal band. Thanks, Kit!

In the battle between Sting, a concertina, and a bassoon, which would you pick as more annoying? We also learn that Charles is allergic to cat hair (and stress) and that even though Oliver is apparently allergic to good taste he is one helluva fundraiser. This episode makes some truly horrific things funny, but did it help us guess the murderer?
We watched Only Murders in the Building, season 1, episode 3, "How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?"
