  • Only 3 things matter in youth sports

Love of the gameCharacter developmentSkill progression

    ... in that order ..

Sport is an undeniably great medium to inject life lessons into our kids

The lessons I learned playing sports as a kid laid a foundation for the character I carry today as a 32 year old man. I am beyond grateful to have had parents who “got it” and optimized my experience for character development above all else.

I’m striving to give the same to my kid - and I want to help you do the same.

Unfortunately, 80% of kids who play sports quit by age 12..

robbing them of the opportunity to continue playing a game they once loved

and to further build their character through it.

My goal is for us to fix this issue moving forward.

In youth sports, only 3 things matter (in this order!):

Love of the GameCharacter DevelopmentSkill Progression

    Follow me on this….

    If we make sports fun..

they maintain and grow their love of the game

    they want to play

    they want to practice

they practice on their own in the back yard

    they're engaged

meaning they actually care when coach talks

because they care about the game and want to get better

so they listen to the character development stuff

we teach them about how to work hard

    how to practice hard

how to be a great team mate

how to respond to adversity and failure

    how to compete and win

which makes it more fun, by the way,

    and because they're having fun

and they want to come back

and they understand how to work hard

    and how to practice hard

and how to work as a team

    and how to compete

Aad how to learn from mistakes

then the output of all of that

Is them getting better at the game!

    and then…

THIS IS THE MAGIC PART RIGHT HERE

as they get better at the game

    the game becomes more fun

because everything is more fun when you get better at it

and because they’re having more fun

    they play longer

providing more opportunity to build character

which ultimately makes them better at the game

    and the cycle continues….

    … it’s a beautifully vicious cycle

and it’s my mini manifesto on sports.

In today’s episode I go deep on this!!

Sign up for the DAD THE MAN Newsletter for exclusive content and show updates!

    GUEST NOTES

Todd is a guy I connected with over social media. His handle is @irun.iwork.idad - and his content is a great mix of those three things: Fitness, work, and family life, which are all pretty relevant for us. He's a successful New York City trader.. beautiful family, four kids.. ridiculous shape .. coaches the little league teams.. Todd does it all.. and he utilizes fitness as a catalyst to do it all at a high level. We talked a lot about this idea of using fitness as a catalyst, and among other things, we went deep into the dynamics of Youth sports, Todd give us his “3 team rules” that he uses with all his little league teams that provide a framework for success on and off the field. You’ll walk away from this episode with a new perspective on fitness and a kick in the tail to get moving.

  • Today is the day - Dad the Man 2.0 is official live!

In today’s episode we’ll cover three quick things:

Where we came from - The Dad the Man origin story (Clif’s notes version) (1:55)Where we’ve been - Why we took 6 months off (8:05)Where we’re headed - What you can expect from Dad the Man 2.0 (12:30)

Said very simply, Dad the Man is THE place for us dads on a lifelong pursuit of excellence at home, at work, at church, and everywhere in between to get together and get better

…. think “personal development for dads through a Christian world-view.”

This isn’t about us, it’s about them (them = those who depend on us)

We all have a lot going on —> We’ve all been blessed with a lot of responsibility

And we owe it to those who rely on us to be our best.

Our wives, kids, family, friends, coworkers, teams, churches….

… they all deserve our best … they all deserve our fastball

This show is my own exploration into being my best

And learning how to expand my own capacity to handle more better

So I can serve those around me better

If you’re not up for the challenge of becoming your best…

… then now would be the time to unsubscribe

… but if you’re up for it

then you are in the right place.

Adrian is the founder of the men's coaching program called Men of Bedrock. He's a husband, he's a dad, he's a teacher, and he's been a big supporter of me and this show over the last year or two. He's someone I've learned from both directly and just from following him and his content on instagram. He's a guy that I have a ton of respect for. Its easy to talk the talk but he walks the walk and sets a great example for the rest of us to follow. He's a man of faith and he doesn't shy away from it. I love that about him. I think so highly of Adrian and I'm honored to have him on the show.

Drew Holcomb is a fantastic musician and plays with a group called Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. In fact, The Neighbors actually just released their ninth album, called Strangers No More (LINKED HERE). Drew is a Tennessee man - born in Memphis, went to school at Univ of Tennessee in Knoxville, and now lives in Nashville with his wife Ellie, who is also a well-known, talented musician, and his three kiddos, Emmylou, Huck, and Rivers. He also started a really incredible music festival in my home town of Chattanooga called Moon River. People come from all over for that one they get amazing acts to come play. It is really well done. Drew's humor is dry and direct, which made this conversation a lot of fun. He's honest and unafraid to tell it like it is. The back half of this conversation is especially great. We talk about living in community, why our job as parents is not to entertain our kids, and Drew gives his take on vulnerability as well as some other unsolicited advice. Above it all, Drew is an incredible man, husband, and father, and it was an honor to host him on the show
