Andrea Canning sits down with Dateline producers Carol Gable and Haylee Barber to discuss Craig Melvinâs latest episode, âIn the Matter of Alex Murdaugh.â In June of 2021, the wife and son of prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh were found shot to death in the back of their family estate. One year later, Murdaugh was indicted for their murders. He pleaded not guilty. His trial began in January 2023 and was labeled "the trial of the decade" by local news outlets. A jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to serve life in prison. But last week, the South Carolina State Supreme Court overturned the convictions citing conduct on the part of court clerk Becky Hill that denied Murdaugh a fair trial. Haylee and Carol share what it was like to learn such major news on a case theyâve been covering for years. Andrea shares an extra clip of Craig discussing the overturned verdict with Murdaughâs defense attorneys. Plus, Haylee and Carol answer your questions from social media.

Lester Holt sits down with Keith Morrison to discuss his latest episode, âDeadly Swagger.â In 2021, wealthy California couple Gary Spohr and Wendy Wood were gunned down in their home on Lake Tahoe. Investigators quickly uncovered security camera video showing a masked intruder sneaking into their house on the day of the shooting, while the couple was out on the lake with one of their daughters and her children. It would take more than two years to make an arrest in the case. The accused turned out to be the couple's son-in-law, former Major League Baseball pitcher Dan Serafini. Keith tells Lester about his emotional conversation with the lead detective on the case and his probing jailhouse interview with Serafini. They also discuss how memory can shape an investigation.
