She holds accreditations and fellowships from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Pierre Fruchard Academy. Dr. Lavigne is a renowned lecturer in dental aesthetics and comprehensive care. She established a patient-centric, aesthetics-focused practice in the Boston suburbs before pursuing an orthodontic residency at Tufts University.

Driven by her fascination with airway and occlusion, Dr. Lavigne transitioned to orthodontics, aiming to provide truly interdisciplinary care. She sold her cosmetic practice and embarked on her orthodontic journey in July 2020.

In her orthodontic practice, Dr. Lavigne combines her restorative dentistry expertise with orthodontic training, prioritizing comprehensive treatment planning that considers both facial aesthetics and three-dimensional tooth alignment. Her ultimate goal is to achieve each patient's ideal outcome, going beyond just achieving a Class I canine occlusion.

Dr. Lavigne also highlights the critical significance of early orthodontic evaluations, recommending that children undergo orthodontic assessments around age seven. She underscores factors such as crossbites, functional shifts, and crowding in primary teeth as potential indicators for early intervention.

Shifting gears, Dr. Lavigne discusses the utilization of 3D printing for orthodontic brackets and the influence of artificial intelligence in enhancing treatment planning precision. She stresses that while aligner technology is a valuable tool, the practitioner's skill and understanding of the software play a pivotal role in achieving successful outcomes.

She notes that the journey of personal growth and improvement throughout the accreditation process is equally valuable as achieving the accreditation itself.

She advises younger dentists not to hesitate in reaching out to experienced colleagues for guidance and mentorship opportunities. • In this podcast episode, get to know Chuck Cohen, the Managing Director of Benco Dental.

Chuck tells us, first and foremost, that Benco Dental's perspective revolves around the concept of long-term thinking. Instead of fixating on quarterly results, they prioritize strategic decision-making and encourage dentists to view their relationship with distributors as partnerships rather than mere transactions. This entails sharing practice goals and objectives, with the distributor actively working to help dentists achieve these objectives, creating a value-added collaboration.

"The interesting thing to me is that I think we are one of the best-kept secrets in dentistry. We're the third-largest player in the space and the largest family-owned, privately-held distributor. Patterson and Schein are bigger, but we're number three. Our market share is only 12%. So, that means, on average, eight out of 10 doctors may have heard of us but have never bought anything from us. I believe that we're a bit boutiquey in that way. We only want to grow as fast as we can provide great customer service, and that's been a conscious decision over the past 90 years—to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. If we can also grow at the same time, that's good too. But customer satisfaction is what we live and die by."

He goes on to explain how independent dental practices outperformed large dental chains and DSOs in the post-pandemic period, proving their resilience and efficiency. Despite initial fears of DSO dominance, independent practices demonstrated impressive survival and recovery. This highlights the effectiveness of dental infection control procedures and the entrepreneurial spirit of independent practices. Overall, the dental profession showcased its ability to adapt and thrive during and after the pandemic.

In the ever-evolving landscape of dentistry, Benco Dental sees itself as a support system for both dentists and labs. A prime example is how to approach 3D printing.

"3D printing is going to change every single thing about dentistry, no matter what specialty you're in, no matter whether you're a lab, a general dentist, an endodontist, you need a 3D printing strategy. There are many opportunities to make mistakes in a 3D printing strategy, and the 3D printing strategy for one practice is going to be different from somebody down the street. There are many opportunities to make a mistake. Who can you partner with that's willing to help you figure out how to apply all these new whiz-bang technologies effectively into your practice? You need someone who understands the landscape, someone who sees other offices, someone who says, 'You know what, that is what I would recommend for Dr. Smith down the street, but it's not for you. You need to do this instead because you're a smaller volume practice.' That's where a partner can come in and help guide you. There will be a lot of dentists who say, 'okay, I'm going to figure this out on my own,' and I can guarantee a lot of them are going to make mistakes along the way because it's complicated and it's changing quickly, and that's where a distributor rep and partner can make all the difference in the world," says Chuck.

Moreover, Benco Dental places great importance on supporting small, innovative manufacturers. They actively seek out and champion these entrepreneurial companies, ensuring they receive the recognition and attention they deserve within the dental industry.

Benco facilitates the entry of innovative products into the market and collaborates with larger manufacturers to provide cost-effective solutions, adapting to the industry's changing dynamics. Innovation is another cornerstone of Benco Dental's strategy. They actively seek out partnerships with innovative companies to bring cutting-edge products and services to dentists. One noteworthy example is their early collaboration with Overjet, a leading AI company in dentistry, enabling dentists to stay at the forefront of technological advances.

  • Dr. Parag Kachalia is one of the most influential people in dentistry. And as one of the Seattle Study Club’s Top 10 Young Educators, he’s using his influence to help other dentists achieve their best in their business. His only regret in his career is not joining the Study Club sooner.

As dentists, we are responsible for the wellness of our patients, but it’s also our job to run a successful business. And Dr. Kachalia knows that dentistry is about more than just the 32 teeth in the mouth. He’s the rare kind of dentist who loves the business side of things. He minored in economics and explains how that education helps him more in his daily practice (and as a mentor) than any physiology course he took in college.

Economics and dentistry weren’t always the plan — Dr. Kachalia wanted to be an oncologist, but he’s always been an economist at heart. His family ran their own business, and while he was inspired to take economics courses, not many other dental students are. In addition, many teachers aren’t prepared to teach the type of economics we need to run a successful business in the 2020s. Dr. Kachalia discusses this disconnect between the university and the practice and how it inspired him to get involved with the Seattle Study Club.

One of the biggest things he’s doing with the Study Club is discussing new types of dental technology, specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how to pick out what kind of tech you need in your practice. There are three criteria Dr. Kachalia uses before he invests in new equipment or technology, and he shares how we can apply his process to all business investments we make. It’s important to look at how these new kinds of dental technology will work for your practice and how these tools will benefit you not only as a dentist but also as a business owner.

  • Dr. Sammy Noumbissi is a dental surgeon and provider who changed the game decades ago by adding ceramic implants to his repertoire. While other dentists continued to use titanium implants.

Dr. Noumbissi built his practice by listening to his patients. His first decade as a dentist was traditional, working as a general practitioner and using titanium implants. But when he returned to practice on the east coast, he started to work with a different type of patient. The patients in his neighborhood prefer a holistic approach, and they began to ask questions about the kinds of materials he was using in his implants.

Today, our patients have the same access to information that we do and often come into the office with in-depth questions or recommendations of the kinds of treatments they want to have. Dr. Noumbissi recommends that dentists humble themselves and listen to their patients. Then, when they come to us with questions about new procedures or technology, you can take it as an opportunity to learn.

Because ceramic implants will not be for your conventional patient, Dr. Noumbissi goes through the protocol he uses to determine if his patient is the right fit for ceramic implants. We discuss the systematic approach he uses to assess patients' health and lifestyles and how it will impact how patients react to different implant materials.

Dentistry isn't the typical industry that is run by consumers, except when it comes to implants. But until dentists get involved with these new media and materials, the market will always be missing something. Ceramic implants need the eyes of multiple dentists on them. We are the ones who know teeth the best, and we will think of the solutions necessary to improve these products for our patients. Change like this isn't easy, but it can get easier with dentists like Dr. Noumbissi running ahead for us.

  • In our opinion, Dr. Eric Jones is the definition of a Super GP. There is nothing he won’t do for his patients in the Atlanta-Metro area. He’s adopted a new kind of “hybrid practice” model that incorporates a wide variety of procedures and multi-practice elements.

A hybrid office is an innovative way to give your patients exactly what they need while working together with other dentists. Dr. Jones can sometimes complete ten or more different procedures in one day. He walks us through a typical day in his practice and discusses some of the differences he sees between implant patients vs. filling patients.

Dr. Jones spent the first two years of his career in a small family practice, learning how to treat people and help patients live healthier lives. We discuss how this differs from a corporate dental setting and why we need to change the way we approach dentistry that focuses more on the patient experience.

Creating the right patient experience doesn’t have to fall entirely on your shoulders. Dr. Jones recommends seeking out mentors, coaches, and other dentists who have the resources you need. This is how he sparked the idea for a hybrid dental office -- a business model where dentists work together to create a better work-life balance.

Dr. Jones works with dentists, helping them with everything from business planning to patient communication to team development and hiring the right people. He wants dentists to feel confident in their skills and their community. The idea is to break away from the corporate model and help dentists get to where they want to be while maintaining control of their practice and their business.

  • Dr. Ardalan and Dr. Phelps go way back, having gone to university at UNC-Chapel Hill and reuniting again in dental school at NOVA in Ft. Lauderdale. But they took different paths in dental school, and Dr. Reza Ardalan has become one of the premier pediatric dentists in the Carolinas.

Pediatric dentistry is the top choice among incoming dentists, but Dr. Ardalan never thought he'd end up there. He saw other dentists at school studying endodontics and tried to fit in, but it wasn't his passion. However, a pediatric practice fits his lifestyle, and we discuss some of the differences between pediatric vs. general practices that inspired Dr. Ardalan to work with children.

Talking to children is much different than speaking with parents or adult patients, and the hallmark of a pediatric dentist is their ability to communicate. It's important to get down to their level and explain the procedures in their terms, but treating kids with respect and understanding is key in Dr. Ardalan's offices.

Dr. Ardalan creates the right office experience that makes this level of communication possible. Dr. Ardalan designed spaces for children, teens, and even their parents with the intent of spoiling the whole family at the dentist's office. And while he may have always had an idea of how he wanted to treat patients when starting his practice, there were many learning experiences along the way that helped him develop the seamless workflow he has now.

To help other dentists understand this workflow, Dr. Ardalan is writing a book that goes beyond the clinical side of pediatrics. We discuss some of the communication techniques, office design, and team building Dr. Ardalan uses in his office. In addition, he shares some of the slang used in his office to help kids better understand the experience.

Experience is key, and, as dentists, it's our job to guide our patients through it so they can live healthier lives. It's time to think outside of the box and give families a new way to think about going to the dentist.
