In this episode, Nikki and Gray talk with Family Paws expert, Bethany Cunningham, CPDT-KA on preparing Gray to the TWINS he and his wife are expecting in November.
Family Paws provides specialized programs and support for new and expecting parents with dogs. Family Paws Parent Education | Dog Training for Baby Interactions
Since 2002, their goal has been to increase safety and reduce stress in homes with young children and family dogs. They help to answer the question “How can we prepare our dog for life with baby/children?”
Jennifer Shryock, owner and founder of Family Paws, saw a need for resources and information to support new and expecting families with dogs. While answering calls for a German Shepherd rescue Jennifer heard firsthand the concerns, challenges, and heartache families experienced. From fearing how their dog would accept a new addition to a serious bite to a toddler, families needed more support and resources. Recognizing this need led Jennifer down the path to developing this very important niche, dog and baby/toddler dynamics and safety through Family Paws. We strongly believe that education empowers, and our goal is to increase safety and decrease stress for all family members through education and realistic expectations.
Bethany is Family Paws Program Development & Educator Program Co-Instructor. She is a mom, professional dog trainer, and professional photographer. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer with a focus on behavior modification in pet dogs.
Bethany has a deep love of animal behavior, child development, and visual arts, and is delighted by the fact that her multiple roles with Family Paws Parent Education bring all of those passions together. Bethany finds great joy in helping families succeed through relationship-building, empathetic practices for both dogs and children alike, and brings that enthusiasm to Family Paws both in her role with program development and as a co-instructor for the Family Paws Educator course. In this episode, Britteny is back to talk about canine ethology and how DogSpeak uses the LEGS model when working with behavior.
Kim Brophey, a prominent figure in the study of animal behavior, has innovatively integrated an ethological approach into applied behavior analysis. Her trademarked analysis tool, “LEGS,” which encapsulates learning, environment, genetics, and self, complements the more widely recognized “ABC” model—antecedent, behavior, consequence.

Helen St. Pierre, founder of NH non-profit, Old Dogs Go To Helen, joins the pod today to talk about senior dogs.
"We don't talk about seniors enough! I am very guilty of this as my job often doesn't include seniors." - Nikki
Nikki heard Helen speak at the annual LEGS Conference where she opened Nikki's eyes to adjusting our homes and expectations with our senior dogs, not just our pups and adolescent dogs.
Old Dogs Go To Helen is not a facility or a shelter. It is a sanctuary for senior and hospice dogs and hub for people who love old dogs, want to rescue or adopt them, and if they can't, they can donate to help them however they can until that dog finds their forever home. Dogs that need further testing, dogs that need special food, dogs that need costly medical expenses, and dogs that need to be highlighted over others because they aren't as young and spry as the rest. We share older dogs available for adoption there or those that are in need of things. We work with shelters and rescues to help these dogs get what they need without the shelter or rescue having to drain their own resources. It is the best way we can help as many dogs as we can without having them all on our sofa.
The plan for this is to help spread awareness of the joys of senior dog adoption, to help people see how bringing an old dog into your home, for no matter how long, is simply one of the best things you can do for your soul, not to mention what it does for the dog. And if people want to support the mission or cause they can, and if not, they can see some really cute grey faces and maybe tell their friends!"
Find Helen and support her cause!
