Hello Earthlings! 🌊 This week on Earthlings 2.0, we dive into the deep blue with Professor Matthew England, an expert in ocean and climate dynamics. Our warming oceans are doing a lot of heavy lifting for us, absorbing over 90% of trapped heat from greenhouse gasses. But there’s a cost, and we're already seeing a 30% slowdown in the critical Atlantic overturning circulation—a shift climate scientists once thought would take another 100 years!
Together, we explore how this slowdown affects everything, from extreme weather patterns to coral reefs and fisheries. Professor England explains the complex and pressing implications of ocean acidification, sea level rise, and the future of our climate systems. Yet, he ends on a hopeful note, predicting a tipping point in global energy transition, away from fossil fuels, that could shift humanity onto a path toward a more sustainable future.
Key Points
Accelerated Ocean Circulation Slowdown: The Atlantic overturning circulation has already slowed by 30%, a shift scientists initially predicted would happen closer to the end of the century. This slowdown has significant impacts on global climate, contributing to extreme weather and heat retention in tropical oceans.Warming Oceans and Increased Storm Intensity: Our oceans absorb more than 90% of the excess heat from greenhouse gasses, intensifying storms and contributing to the rapid escalation of hurricanes, with categories intensifying quickly.Ocean Acidification and Marine Life Stress: Oceans are acidifying due to increased CO₂ absorption, which weakens the shells of marine life and disrupts ecosystems, notably causing frequent coral bleaching events.Disruptions to Global Weather Patterns: Slower ocean circulation is shifting weather patterns, affecting rainfall distribution and altering agricultural suitability worldwide. This may lead to unpredictable food production areas and extreme weather where it’s least expected.

Hello Earthlings! In this episode of the Earthlings 2.0 podcast, we tackle the multifaceted issue of pronatalism and its global impact. Rachel M. Cohen, a policy correspondent for Vox, joins us to explore why declining birth rates, once seen as a challenge for other regions, are now affecting the U.S. and many countries with traditionally higher birth rates. We discuss the economic and social ramifications, including potential strain on welfare systems, increased unemployment, and intergenerational conflicts as fewer young people are available to support an aging population.
Throughout the discussion, we examine various approaches to address decreasing population growth rates, such as financial incentives, improved childcare systems, and better housing policies. Additionally, we explore the role of immigration as a temporary solution, the evolving cultural attitudes toward family life, and the broader societal expectations. Finally, Rachel offers insights into potential solutions and policy changes that could help balance the challenges posed by declining birth rates.

Hello Earthlings! We’re continuing our summer scheduling with another Earthlings 2.0 rerun: Mast Reforestation with Grant Canary, the visionary CEO behind Mast Reforestation. As of this week, over 1.6 million hectares of forest around the world has been lost to wildfires– and that’s just in 2024 alone! We need these forests to regrow if we want any hope of turning back the worst effects of climate change and that’s why we’re revisiting our conversation with Grant surrounding new technologies and business models that can help ensure forests to regrow.
Reforestation stands as a powerful weapon in our arsenal against climate change, and Grant passionately elaborates on its transformative impact. Discover the manifold benefits this practice offers to our planet while exploring the cutting-edge technologies Mast Reforestation employs. From pioneering drone applications to boots-on-the-ground strategies, these innovations are pivotal in fortifying our planet's resilience against carbon emissions.
Our faith in humanity was restored by Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. The Prime Minister has officially declared a marine reserve spanning approximately 300 square miles (or 800 square kilometers), a critical habitat known to be the only place on Earth where sperm whales congregate year-round for breeding purposes. This marine sanctuary, by prohibiting commercial shipping and fishing activities, offers a much-needed refuge for sperm whales. Scientists highlight that this initiative is not only beneficial for these majestic creatures but also plays a vital role in combating the climate crisis due to the essential nutrients that sperm whales contribute to the ocean ecosystem through their deep-water dives.
